  • A song from the movie - Saturday Night Fever
"If I Can't Have You" is a disco song written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb in 1977. The song initially appeared on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in a version by Yvonne Elliman, released in November 1977. The Bee Gees' version appeared a month later as the B-side of "Stayin' Alive".
The song later appeared on the Bee Gees' compilation Their Greatest Hits: The Record. The remixed version was released and remastered in the compilation Bee Gees Greatest in 2007 and marked the return of the Bee Gees to the US Hot Dance Tracks charts after 28 years. According to Maurice, this track was the first song they did while they were recording the other songs for the film. The recording was started at Château d'Hérouville as a basic track only and completed later at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles.[1]
Saturday Night Fever is a 1977 American dance film directed by John Badham and starring John Travolta as Tony Manero, a young man whose weekends are spent visiting a local Brooklyn discotheque; Karen Lynn Gorney as Stephanie Mangano, his dance partner and eventual friend; and Donna Pescow as Annette, Tony's former dance partner and would-be girlfriend. While in the disco, Tony is the king. His care-free youth and weekend dancing help him to temporarily forget the reality of his life: a dead-end job, clashes with his unsupportive and squabbling parents, racial tensions in the local community, and his associations with a gang of macho friends.
A huge commercial success, the film significantly helped to popularize disco music around the world and made Travolta, already well known from his role on TV's Welcome Back, Kotter, a household name. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, featuring disco songs by the Bee Gees, is one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time.[5] The film is the first example of cross-media marketing, with the tie-in soundtrack's single being used to help promote the film before its release and the film popularizing the entire soundtrack after its release. The film also showcased aspects of the music, the dancing, and the subculture surrounding the disco era: symphony-orchestrated melodies; haute couture styles of clothing; pre-AIDS sexual promiscuity; and graceful choreography.
The story is based upon a 1976 New York magazine article by British writer Nik Cohn, "Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night". In the mid-1990s, Cohn acknowledged that he fabricated the article.[6] A newcomer to the United States and a stranger to the disco lifestyle, Cohn was unable to make any sense of the subculture he had been assigned to write about; instead, the character who became Tony Manero was based on a Mod[7] acquaintance of Cohn's. In 2010, Saturday Night Fever was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthecially significant" by the Library of Congress and therefore preserved for all time in their National Film Registry.
The sequel Staying Alive (1983) also starred John Travolta and was directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Memories, experiences, the very summation of life....When it's all said and done, that's all you can take with you are the memories/experiences,the good, bad, ugly all categorized by the experiencer (Birth of your child/children, 1st steps, words, day of school, boyfriend/girlfriend, school-dance, graduation, prom, puppy/kitten, broken heart, car, wedding day, grandchild, car, car accident, leaving for college....i have 6 children (4 bio,1 step,1 adopted).....The absolute joys of my life, wld not change a thing...the good,bad,ugly...All made us the tight-knit family we are today and 100% of the credit goes to the lynch-pin, my mama who guided and assisted me through every bit of it, i could call that women at 3am seeking advice, NEVER ONCE did that women ask me 'Do you know what time it is????...."Tell mama the deal"......."Well here is what you should do"!!!....."I'm not sure that will work?"....."Then call some other mother at 3am"......" You the only mother i got" "THEN SHUT UP AND LISTEN".....When my mother passed away.....I absolutely refused to feel sad by focusing on all the time she gave me advice and the many times she started with "I am not an expert here or this solely based on life experience or if you want Dr.phil you have dialed the wrong # n her all-time favorite "LIFE, is for the living".....She lives on in my heart n memory n that's the true BLESSING....

How we know that it’s not just us old people saying this is because the 60s were amazing, so was the 70s, then the 80s, and then the 90s. We lived through them all… everything has been downhill since then… we were so so lucky. I look at the last 24 years and think how bad the world has been, culturally and globally. When you live through the decades you just take it for granted that things could only get better. You could never realise that these musicians, artists, actors, directors… yes, even law makers wouldn’t be making our lives better forever. You never could realise that any moment things could just all collapse and your life could be so drastically affected by the emergence of so much crap, from bad quality music to bad quality politicians. And after 25 years of it you suddenly realise.. wow… we really did have it so so good. And within another 20 years or so they’ll be hardly any of us left to remember those golden times ever existed.

Still one of my all time favourites and still play while I'm driving. Love playing music from my young and innocent days as it brings back childhood memories of how great life was before I grew up and had to deal with the crap of living and adult life. Music from that era is not only nostalgic but, and I know this sounds stupid, it also comforts me somehow and eases my mind. If only I could go back to those days when everything about life was great when seen through the eyes of a 10 year old.

Where have the years gone to!!!???? I still love this song and still dance like those in the feature film "Saturday Night Fever". Bring back the days of the good old nightclubs/discotheques with all the trimmings - An array of coloured Lights- must have crystal balls also (no Disco is complete without them), synced coloured floor lights, best of the disco music and being with all your friends from Friday to Saturday night doing the latest disco dances. Those were damn good years. This generation will unfortunately not get the chance to experience what was back then. Only the surviving motion pictures and people who lived to tell the younger ones the stories of yesteryear. Motion pictures like "Saturday Night Fever" really did show how to really get down at a disco.
