Inkscape Tutorial - Creating a Tree of Life for Cutting

- In this video tutorial from 2Dgameartguru.com, I will show you how to create a cut-out design of a tree of life.
The design is created by using just basic shapes, the pen tool with the spiro path option, along with tapered strokes. I start with the base shapes, fill the design and then add decoration to it.
Inkscape can be a little challenging when it comes to working around bugs [the taper effect has one of those known issues when the diamond nodes (used to adjust the extent of the taper) touch]. Saving often, being patient, and planning your design process [with a plan B in mind] helps.
Most of the functionality shown in the video can be created with other software tools such as Affinity Designer, Adobe Illustrator, or CorelDraw with minor alterations and different names for the tools used.

I was using an older version of Inkscape. Thx to what I have seen here I installed the newer version 1.2. Thx for this video! Great job!
I am using version 1.3. I am not quite sure when the spiro path option for the pen tool was added but it should be in v1.2.

You are welcome. I am a bit more reluctant to use Inkscape these days. There was a timelapse and prior to it the game characters ( which stlll needs the animation part recorded ).

May I ask the reason for this reluctance?
I noticed some stability issues in this video, and sometimes I have already found them. But it's still my vector software of choice.
It's not so much the software itself. It's the community behind Inkscape - I am a member of the inkscape dev team and took part in the last About screen contest [to make sure the software looks nice on start-up and in the promotions]. Things were said by users as well as other members that left a bad aftertaste.

Thank you so much for this. I love this design so much that I’m going to create my own version in Affinity Designer & then cut it out on my Cricut. I should add that I downloaded Inkscape a while ago, but haven’t tried using it yet.
It's very much the same approach in Affinity Designer. Use lines with pressure curves and curl them manual [as there is nothing like the spiro path in Affinity Designer [yet]. Let me know if you run into problems with it.

Can you make a tree of life tutorial using affinity design? Would it work kinda the same way with the stroke width in affinity? I really enjoy your tutorials and seeing ones you make in Inkscape and affinity design with affinity on my computer and tablet being the two main ways for me. Thanks for this great tutorial
Thanks... I can try but it would have a rather different feel to it as this tutorial relied heavily on the spirograph setting for the pen tool. Affinity Designer has no tools for spirals like it. I will have a think about it and see what I can come up with.

Is't possible to make mockup?
Sure... You can take the design and place it in any scenario - adding an additional copy below to simulate depth, adding a gradient for light influence, and a drop shadow to show depth.

hey, great video... i don't find a "mode" for activate spiro path in calligraphy tool, do you know how i can??
It's in the top menu - when you select the pen tool - 2D from the left.

It's the Pen Tool [B] - two above - not the Calligraphy Tool [C].
