I always listen to this kind of things at night to help me sleep. Some of the narrators have such calming and soothing voices that it doesn't even bother me that it's a scary story, I sleep so soundly and deeply. Its really wonderful. =3

I've lived in the south all my life and have never heard them refereed to as lightening bugs. Where are you that they are called that? Here in TX we call them firefly's.
Anything that emanates features of another without matching them causes feelings of intimidation and fear, same thing for animals and racists. Its a trained biological mechanism to either fear or beat out the “competition” so to speak. One of the few remnants of instinct that are actually entertaining.

The third story Granny Clark performed by my favorite podcast was quite horrifying and I have quite a creative imagination so it made it even better.
