This is not an endorsement. I do not get anything back from the vendor. Use this as an example.

Thanks, I just started running out of USB resources last week. I would plug one device in and another device would be kicked off the hub. I had bought 2 USB 3.0 hubs to be future proof. I moved some devices off the hubs and directly into the USB ports on my machine to free up some of the resources and that worked for now. Looks like I will need to replace the 3.0 hubs with 2.0 hubs. I already have the extra headers as you suggested. I am very disappointed that the number of resources are so limited on 3.0.

Yeah, I ran into that same issue a while ago and read up on it. Apparently 3.0 uses way may resources and has more limits that 2.0, so now I stick with if it's white it goes into a 2.0 port or hub whenever possible :-)

I found and fixed my problem!!! It turns out that when a resource is added and then removed, Windows keeps it in the Device Manager but HIDES it. When you connect the device back in it will sometimes (often) re-add the device rather than using one of the previously used and HIDDEN device entries, eating up your resources. There is an option to show hidden devices in the Device Manager (View->Show Hidden Devices). Once checked, hidden devices show up grayed out. I had dozens, maybe even hundreds listed. I went in and strategically started deleting them, eventually I deleted all but a handful of devices that I knew I might use again. This fixed my issue!!!

Nice info for those folks not aware of those headers. I have an Intel NUC, so I have no way, that I know of, of really expanding any ports on that tiny thing - even though it has a few extra headers, if I recall.

Yeah, we've been playing with those at work... so small :-)

You should add links to those usb port motherboard adapters.

Good idea, I'm not getting anything from them so I was just saying, any adapter would work :-) I went ahead and added them as "examples" :-)
