Great stuff! A few months ago I bought a second-hand book and it had an old airline boarding pass tucked inside. I assume it was being used as a bookmark. It made me wonder about who it was, why they were traveling, why they never finished the book, how the book made its way to me, etc. It made me feel strangely connected to someone I don't even know.

I read “Haunted by Books” by Mark Valentine. It made me think of your show and this show really touches on the things discussed in that book. Same with “The Bibliomaniac” by Charles Nodier. Stephen, did you know bibliomania is in the DSM? Do we need therapy? 😂

When I go through my books, which I don't often do, when I organize or have to move things around, I drift into the past, especially when I come across a book inscribed to me by someone who's no longer in my life (break-ups and deaths are the hardest). I find myself pausing a lot, dividing up the work, as if it's stones I'm moving, boulders, not paper. There are certain books in a glassed-in bookcase I probably won't touch until/if I know it's my time to check out, like the leather-bound Bible my mom gave to me, my first. Sorry for the sentimentality. But the video got me thinking. I'm usually a cold, hard minimalist when it comes to most of my life--except for books. Enjoyed the video. Cheers.

I got 3 minutes into this and had to go re-read M John's The Gift (the one about the guy who's handed a mysterious book at a train station). I love old books with stuff in them. It makes me a bit sad when they are library books in perfectly good condition though... I wind up thinking a few more people could have had their minds blown by this one... I'll be back once I've re-read The Gift 🙂

It's interesting that nowadays if an author name drops a band or another author you can pretty much instantly learn about it via the internet. Something that wasn't possible 30 years ago. I'm reading Regicide and he name dropped the Passage, so I'm listening to them now. :-)

This was great. Loved it. Books I can't even find listed here like Manchester/London ones. I know you were doing this for *YOUR* Nick, but I wish you'd gone a little deeper into "Dr. Nic." I had to dig through a lot of entries to try to comb one from the other and discovered that a lot of his stuff looks quite interesting. "Complementary to the channel." Unlike those other authors I bump into with secret clones who write Economics textbooks or Dog Training manuals under the same names as SF authors.

Loved this. I'm a bit of a collector of Swan River Press books, so I have a HB copy of Dummy. I also have copies of Director's Cut and The Matter of the Heart, although it's been a long time since i read them. Shadow Lines is on my TBR pile; I'm saving it because I know I will love it. Photographer Marc Atkins has done many book covers. I first encountered his work though through the reading of Iain Sinclair's books; he's one of Sinclair's psychogeographical companions. I have some nice Atkins' postcards - stark black and white images from East London (doorways and tombstones) - which I've been meaning to frame. My only notable inclusion is one that was tucked into a copy of Akenfield by Ronald Blythe - who passed away last year - which I bought on a visit to Uppark House a few years back: a postcard from Blythe to the previous owner of the book, sadly undated, but probably from the 1980s. Edit to add, Zeroville is the only Erickson I've not read, so now I'm going to have to buy a copy. Dammit, this channel is getting expensive 😊. One final edit to add, I can recommend Tim Dee's Landfill as a great book about gulls and their relationship with human beings.

I mentioned 'Landfill' in a video a couple of years back -it's my favourite of my early videos, where I walk around Bristol Harbourside and gull books naturally came up. Swan River do lovely stuff, right? You'll love 'Zeroville', it rocks! I read some Blythe last year, first time for ages.

Thanks for doing this video. I’ve been wanting to read White Spines and Shadow Lines since I first laid my eyes on them online- I have a bunch of Picador books and so this imprint has stood out for me.
Also, I must go check out your older video as it’s one I’ve missed.
Some of the more interesting inclusions I’ve found in books:
    Money
Letter from the author to their friend (who obviously was the previous owner)
    Postcard which I really like
Film ticket stub (inside a novelisation of the same movie)
    Drawing/poetry
    Photographs
    Author’s signature/comments
    Less interesting:
    Receipts
    Transport ticket
    Torn bits of paper
    Boring Bookmark
    Business card

Sorry to hear that, my friend. First of all, be kind to yourself, do things you enjoy. Secondly, think of the positive sides of not having that relationship anymore- there probably are some. Thirdly, aim to date someone- even casually- as soon as you can, even if it's just a one-off- will help you move on. Look after yourself now.
