The new Desert Tech WLVRN or Wolverine is now available in 308, 5.56 and 6.5 Creedmoor. The WLVRN or Wolverine is the 3rd generation evolution of the DT MDR and MDRX.

Thanks for doing an overview on the WLVRN. Some technical information adders are: 1. The detachable feed ramps allow us to extend the feeding channels below the diameter of the barrel to increase reliability and it also allows us the flexibility to create dedicated feed ramps for future caliber offerings if needed such as the 6 ARC and 8.6 BLK. 2. The WLVRN bolt carrier is actually heavier than the mdr because we slowed the bolt speed down to improve reliability as well as reduce cartridge damage as it is stripped from the mag. 3. The biggest weight savings came from eliminating the steel mounting components in the receiver and integrally machining them as aluminum is 1/4 the weight of steel. We did add a steel insert in the rail the cam pin rides against for long term durability.
Sweet rifle! I wish I wasn't so poor and could afford it...
I have a question, why was the forward ejecct system removed? WAs it really that much of a failure point?
You guys wanna send me one to review also?
@@marcusrauch4223 No it wasn't a failure point but it was perceived as a failure point and perception is more important than reality unfortunately. It did have two legitimate issues that kept LE/MIL customers from using it and those issues are 1. it didn't really allow for visible chamber checking 2. Malfunction clearing was much more complicated. For all of these reasons we simplified things and focused 100% on maximizing performance instead.
@@volkskrieg8735 that is a good question. I'll get our webmaster to remove it. It isn't a full auto and I think he just copy and pasted Sabertooth data in for it and didn't notice.
THANK GOD SOMEBODY MADE CONTENT ON IT. The product started shipping to people a month ago and there's absolutely no consumer reviews or product reviews since it's been out for a month lmao
It’s a desert tech… that’s probably why
Yes. The original MDR had a lot of issues, along with poor customer service. It turned a lot of people off even though the mdrx was pretty good. I'm sure this rifle will be even better.
I have a video on it...Heading to the range this week..So far..in 223 and 6.5cm..Its AS accurate as the MDRx
@@user-yd1dx5qs4j The original certainly had issues but I wouldn't say that desert tech offered poor customer service. They acknowledged the issues, developed fixes, and offered the fixes for free to their customers.
Don't buy it yet. You don't want to part of the recall.
A few years ago, Garand thumb made a video of it. The gun was put through some tests and it was found to be an under performer in terms of build quality and bullet feeding, jamming issues. He then did a second video a while later and rechecked the same tests for an updated model. Its build quality and firing/jamming issues had been resolved to great extent. I wonder how this one will fair and compare against its predecessors…
Really looking forward to the accuracy testing!
I feel like bull pups are finally becoming something I’d invest money in. Designs like this minimizing the downsides
Not gonna lie, this is probably one of the best looking bullpups out there.
Made by a company that got its money from the Kingston group. Polygamists that marry uncles to nieces, and to first cousins. Take girls out of school around the age of twelve, and use child labor at their companies. Just so you know. Do I wish they had zero ties to them, absolutely because they make cool stuff. But it is what it is.
Tavor
But when will there be a Bulpup with a modular upper/lower system like on AR. I wouldn't mind if there were only proprietary uppers available as long as the entire upper - including the sights - could be switched. I'm aware there are bulpup lowers for the AR15 gut that's not what I'm talking about.
@@philippk819 I think Ukraine had one that is basically that. The upper is modular so you can switch between a bullpup and a regular style rifle. Honestly though, I don't think bullpup owners are interested in modular design.
@@Chainshot91You are thinking of the new Polish military rifle the Grot.
I don’t mind paying $3000 for a rifle. I don’t mind a little bit of slop. I do mind a little bit of slop on a $3000 rifle.
it wouldn't stop me from buying it but I would definitely tinker with it to make it better in that small aspect, 100%
It was abit annoying to find this in my rifle..More so that DTs CEO did a vid on why he didn't like the AR15./said he hated the tolerance/rattle in the ar15. Which isnt in the previous 2 generations of MDR and MDRX.
Agreed 100%. I'm not buying a dang near $3k rifle and then "fiddling" with it to get it to where it should've been out of the factory..
They got rid of the adjustable gasblock? That's too bad
@signkutter9218 No..Its still present on the Wlvrn.
Looking forward to a WLVRN vs Tavor 7 video. Would be a good benchmark for bullpups going forward
You’ll want a tavor 7 all day long. Why gamble away your money with desert tech?
vs JAKL .308
@@XenonLover52 Tavor 7 is heavier by 2lbs with worse ergonomics, a terrible handguard design and a borderline unusable trigger. I'd also be willing to bet serious money that the Tavor 7 is less accurate by a significant margin because that weapon is, in my experience, 3 MOA with most loads. Quite frankly, there is no reason to select a =Tavor 7 over any premium(LMT,KAC,Seekins etc) 7.62 semi automatic rifle, least of all the wolverine.
I've owned an srs and shot a couple other dt rifles. if they make this new wlvrn as good as they claim it will be fantastic. I'll be getting one in 6.5 creed or the new fury army cartridge for hunting.
i own a tavor and the only thing that made it usable was the geiselle trigger i bought. now its a fantastic light caliber rifle, just not super accurate.@spacecaesar7619
Regarding accuracy testing: Desert Tech explains, that due to the new ejection system taking less energy to run, they could reduce the gas and thereby reducing barrel movement. Before you do accuracy testing, it'd be great if you could explain what gas settings both guns are currently on. Additionally, perhaps you could verify the DT statement and see how accuracy behaves if the gas setting is changed on either gun.
Thanks for the great review.
So glad you reviewed this.Been waiting.
Great and very thorough review!!!
I'm glad you even tried to put the bolt carrier assembly from the MDR into the WLVRN, but it would have been nice to see it so we could see why it wouldn't fit. ☺️
Beyond excited to see how this thing proves itself. I wanted an MDRX for a long time, but the cost and reliability questions turned me off. I am seriously hoping after a couple years of use by reputable guntubers like Mac, the WLVRN proves to fix all those issues and justify me dropping the money for one. If this platform can be reliable, it could be the "one rifle to rule them all" IMO.
I was gonna buy mdrx and seen the reliability issues so also skipped it for the price want crazy about not amazing reliability
I had the same sentiments regarding the MDRx. I just went with a VHS2 since it's military proven. I still want a bullpup 308 so it's between this, the Tavor 7, and MAYBE the Black Rain Ordinance 308 Bullpup.
@@TopDonBarrow Appears my gun nerdiness hasn't reached those other options you mentioned lol. I only know IWI for their 5.56 Tavor and a couple handguns. The thing that makes the WLVRN so compelling above others is the ability to change calibers - not that being able to do so quickly has a ton of practical application, but having the option to say, pack a couple caliber change kits in a bug out vehicle is a big plus. With minimal space and effort, you can have a battle rifle, a semi-long range hunting rifle in 6.5 CM, a quiet 300 blk CQB rifle, and do-it-all 5.56 rifle all in a small profile. *IF it all works, the base platform is insanely versatile, and when space and weight are premium, having those options is super attractive.
Love it. Great review!
Wow man that’s pretty smooth. Nice set up
Love the improvements and innovations. Still on my wishlist
The tapping knife is the best. I will strive to similarly use a tapping knife during all of my explanations in the future.
I thank you for this.
Great review!! Thank you as always🤙🏽🤩👍🏼
Exactly the review and reviewer I was waiting for!
4:20 The charging handle change was an update with the MDRX, not the WLVRN.
Wow, looks like they have done a great job.
I’ve been waiting for this rifle!
Great detail
I'm really glad this rifle continues to see development. It looked pretty grim for a second but it's cool to see innovation especially in both the 308 world and the bullpup world.
that forward ejection will be a collector stuff in the future.
Rare stuff.
You’re the best MAC!!!!
I received mine last week and absolutely love it. I have the 16" 308 in FDE. This is a much better value than buying a Sig!
How has accuracy been for you?
@@marcosjimenez80 I am not a precision shooter but I am getting 1.5 MOA out of it. I haven't shot past 100yds yet, but I am really happy
@@xcoldone1768 thanks for sharing. Been reluctant to purchase because of the lack of actual shooting data. Your response helps.
I want a 6.5 cm one later on, worried about the accuracy.
@@xcoldone1768shooting 1.5 and not even out to 100 yds is not something I'd call super accurate
Excellent! Waiting on the accuracy test.
My WLVRN in 7.62 is on order. Thanks for the video, I am better informed
I like it and those updates are pretty nice to see. I'd live to see these rifles in Canada.
Yes! out of all the people to be doing a video on this platform. I am so happy it is you.
Aww...
GREAT video man. I’m blown away that more people aren’t interested in these rifles. I use my MDRX for all types of hunting and it’s literally the best rifle I’ve ever hunted with hands down. Even with an s sized can it’s far shorter than most hunting rifles.
My goodness you actually got me an advertisement that I like 🤣
Very nice breakdown, i want one now 😅
Very excited about this rifle. The rollout has been lackluster, so I’m glad we can finally get a review. If it’s very reliable and reasonably accurate I’ll buy one for sure in 6.5. I do wish they made a dedicated 5.56 version though. Imagine how much weight they could save without sizing for larger cartridges and having the weight associated with barrel swaps.
I'm picking mine up on Saturday.
2:21 I really like your pointing stick good sir!
Used in a video....tax write off!!
I've watched Desert Tech for quite a while now and I always saw the screws on the receiver as more a proof of concept because it felt Kel-Tec-ish on a cool design. The old guns might function amazingly but the Wolverine feels like a truly developed design. Shedding extra parts and removing concepts that are nice, but either don't work out or are extra crap you have to lube and take care of. As well as reducing machine time to complete a rifle and reducing cost eventually. And it's all a civilian design as far as I know, which don't get those re-works anywhere near as quickly as a military adopted design. I would like to see a replacable grip but I doubt that's easy to do on a polymer lower.
You the man!!!
My MDRX 308 is 2-4 MOA rifle, changed to 223- 1-1,5 MOA.
This sisor system in FE use much more gas than normal one and that's why it has more kick.
I can't wait till you get a PWS UXR to test. My Scar might have to find a new home depending on how the review goes.
The nicest looking bullpup IMHO.
I'd love to see a ghosted trigger, put the gun on a scale with the scope, supressor and loaded/unloaded mag, extensive accuracy with match and range ammo, use decible meter to show us how loud it is, and if you dare, torture test it on camera. Do the gauntlet!
Awesome videos. Always happy to see you posted, keep it up!
I am on tight budget, and my 308 rifle is the Ruger SFAR with flipped up iron sights
3rd gen, and I like everything I seen. I'm gonna be looking to buy one for sure.
been waiting for this one since the release video
I will watch again!!!
Always liked the M392 vibe of these DT rifles.
But that forward eject is what I actually liked about the MDR line. When I got to shoot it, it was the best idea for a modern bullpup with the idea of quick switching of shoulders in mind.
I'm with you on this. The forward eject was the very thing that made the MDR lineup interesting.
The P90 has the best implementation of ejection.
The brass just falls at your feet from the bottom of the gun.
I wonder if anyone has slipped on ejected brass from downwards ejecting platforms? Seems like a serious issue on hard surfaces.
I'd like to remove that possibility from any platform, TBH.
Or just implement it the way RM277 did it, AFAIK it doesn't rely on scissor mechanism... Akin to Singapore's newer bullpup (forgot the name)
Yeah as the top comment said, good to finally see a WLVRN review.
I actually wanted to know more about this thing
Accuracy testing will be great but with a variety of ammo and bullet weight
It's one thing to shoot excellent with what the firearm likes it's even better if it shoots good with everything
As well all know bullpup is the best.
Desert tech are doing good things
Well, i hope you just don't know about all the cousin facking and child abuse...
Buuuut, Desert tech is owned by a polygamist group that in no exaggeration, marries uncles to nieces, stops girls from going to school after the age of 12, use internal child labor to which all the money goes into their own bank and only their high priests have access for investment and themselves . No joke and not cool. Kingston group. Many do not know this
DT has made some great improvements to their platform. Secretly hoping the Kel-Tec makes an overhaul to the RDB.
I would like to see you discuss the ease of clearing a malfunction and/or locking back the bolt manually for a visual inspection.
I need it! Miss my mdr’s!
The Desert Tech Wolverine has got to be hands down ONE OF THE bullpups EVER MADE!
Reliability and durability testing is needed.
Woah. That's a pretty big statement. Especially considering how nice Nicholas has been with you in other comments.
@@volkskrieg8735 Right. My bad, I misread your comment. Sorry.
@@volkskrieg8735 Sweet. Cheers.
I always have liked the desert tech bullpups I just wish they were a bit more affordable
I can feel you. In my country it's even worse. A used MDRx costs as much as a new one in the US, and a new one over her was I think equivalent of 5K $.
Looking forward to a comparison, and accuracy test vids 👍🏽
Looking forward to the follow up video on the FN SCAR DMR. I bought one and cant wait to hear your opinion of it.
If it really is sun minute then what's not to love and be excited about. Well maybe the plastic fore end, can still mount a light but not really a Lazer. Id definitely have one
Im glad it is easy to change ejection side. Although not as easy as the Beretta ARX. It is crazy how a non bullpup rifle has a feature that would be amazing on a bullpup and nobody copies it.
That ejection looks powerful! I think a better deflector would help a lot there
I'm sold. I totally dig the setup I myself would prefer a bullpup. Versus an AR platform and I like the fact that comes in 308. 🇺🇸👊
Nice. Very tempting, but since I can't afford both, I'm hoping to add the .308 JAKL to my 5.56 version. Good looking Wolverine!
I prefer the quick change side eject covers and bolt. I think that's an important feature considering the ejection port is closer to your face in a bullpup platform. But other than that, I have high hopes for this rifle. If this rifle can shoot sub moa, preferably closer to half moa, then it's going to become my DMR. I'm looking forward to the accuracy testing.
Darksword Armory dagger? Nice ;)
🇺🇸
Thankyou for showing that loose front pin area. I have it on mine and another user also is reporting the same thing (Yesterday actually)..I put my WLvrn lower onto my MDR and the problem vanished..So..Its in the receiver (the receiver to lower mis-fit.)..
Can you shoot (for groups) with and without the Hx Can? To show users what they could expect (say with fed gold 168* I know your fav) before a can is added?
Thanks for the video, I haven't seen anyone else post about it yet
Um..me..
Nice video❤!
Ive got the MDRX in 16inc 300 Blackout.
All of my Points to improve the gun are now in the WLVRN😂.
Sad but true, i should wait a year longer!
But if you could improve something on the WLVRN, what would you change!
Ps it is fanstastic work from DT🎉
I love these...I just want to see the caliber options, and barrel lengths...I know they've had stuff posted on their website, but not sure if it's up-to-date. I'd love to get one in 6.5 PRC with a 24" barrel, just to make it about the size of a normal rifle with a suppressor.
I belive the new ramps being removable are a nice feature for changing calibers and still get one reliable functioning. The gun is getting better and better. What a really do not understand is why don't put aditional barrel clamp in front of the receiver to make kind a super accurate version of the gun. Raising the inertia of the whole barrel.
Utah putting out great products.
Kingston Cult.
@@JoshJones-37334yeah it's a little crazy
@@JoshJones-37334 just buy one second hand then.
I guess the practical questions I would have is:
1. How useful is the adjustable gas blocks? How many positions does it have, and is it really useful for tuning or does it just have the generic "unsupressed" and "suppressed" setting?
2. Also, how well does it run with baffle cans vs Huxwrx or CAT cans? Is it picky about suppressors?
3. Oh yeah, and does the rail still have a hot spot from the gas block that you have to watch out for with a c-clamp grip?
Rail hot spot is gone, gas valve has 6 positions. Three for suppressed and 3 for unsuppressed. It runs all cans if gas setting is adjusted properly. Start low and work you way up until you get consistent bolt lockback on empty mag.
@@DesertTechUT thanks for the reply!
@@DesertTechUT I want one
Its not really a tuneable system. .But it works great with Huxwrks cans.
yeah im probably going to get one for christmas
Thank you for this!
When you do your accuracy review, could you compare the Rifles with the stock muzzle device or at least unsuppressed?
We are seeing reports that suppressor performance is significantly better than the stock configuration for removing the fliers that grow the groups.
Follow up: DT did a suppressor vs unsuppressed MDRx in 308. It showed 0.8MOA improvement with the suppressor in 5x5 composite groups using the best groups from several different ammo's tested.
I want one!
Cheers,
jc
Desert Tech just posted a video last night with their accuracy results in 5x5 composite shooting tests. They did 308 Unsuppressed MDRX (2.6 MOA) and 308 suppressed (1.7 MOA) MDRX testing. They also ran other guns through the same testing and each went through multiple brands of match rifle ammo.
It ends up the MDRx unsuppressed performance was fairly bad when compared to others. The Suppressor appears to significantly change Rifle Accuracy and also indicated that the more energy the cartridge has the worse the rifle performs (308) due to the piston system. They recommended 4 fixes that could be done to fix it. Ranging from shooter positioning to a heavy barrel to reduce harmonic issues.
Had to look up what a Nilgai was. Thanks for reminding me the world is weird.
I liked the forward ejection
Me too
Try the jard hammer sear pack for the gun , it gets rid of all the takeup there is in the desert tech hammer sear pack. It also drops the pull weight down a bit. The jard just drops right in. Can swap out hammer sear packs in no time.
The Wlvrn has a great trigger. No take up compared to its older brethren.
Just recently re-watched your video saying you preferred battle rifle was the IWI 308 bullpup. The proven reliability is hard to argue. Very curious how you come to feel about this one
I said the same in my MDRx review- the accuracy is incredible (0.7-0.8moa with good ammo) on the MDRx so another 30% better seems impossible. Desert tech is the #1 bullpup innovator, I just wish they’d offer more affordable variants to try and convert the masses. Even with the substantial weight savings they are still trending just slightly heavy of AR counterparts. I wonder if more material could be removed between the chamber and gas block to help with that without causing heat issues…
Heat issues are the least of your concerns but pressures are going to be the bane of weight savings. You can shave weight anywhere else BUT the gas block and the chamber because of the pressures they have to deal with.
@@123asap6 sorry I should have clarified… the MDRx (and I’m assuming Wolverine) barrel profile is basically pencil thin from the gas block forward, but between the gas block and the chamber it’s a very heavy profile. So I was suggesting maybe reducing that barrel profile, or fluting, etc. 100% agree no wiggle room in the operating areas of chamber and gas block themselves.
Would you say your Hux can had an affect on accuracy?
@@Odinforever2000 that’s a great question which I unfortunately can’t answer. I never took a single shot unsuppressed. Adding and removing the same can from other rifles, I noticed significant impact shift (2-5” depending, and generally up to 12’o’clock) but group size did not change noticeably. I’m sure there is some slight positive impact, but doubt it is a game changer of any kind. Again, just guessing as never tested on the MDRx specifically.
I wanted the MDRx for awhile just couldn't get past the reliability issues. I hope this addressed that and is widely gtg. It's expensive so if I drop the money I want it to work as good as a LMT or Kac which is close to this in price.
I would have loved for them to have a downward ejection system. Perfect ambidexterity
"I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do best... is totally awesome" - The WLVRN
All modern Tavor are full AR style controls besides the bolt release, Which is like the Wolverines. everything else including mag release is AR
I like the Wolverine, I hope that one day in the very near future, I can afford one, to add to my cache of 2, so to make it a cache of 3 & so on & so on etc. etc.
Very nice. I wish I could afford it.
That's a hella lot of slop in that joint where the pin is
Man I really want to get some time in on a bullpup. I was considering the Tavor 7 originally. Would you recommend the WLVRN over it?
If I'm impressed by the accuracy enhancement then I'll buy one (or two, or more, lol).
it's a piston gun so I'm going to *guess* 1moa will be as good as it gets got 5 shot groups
The tensioning screws will help accuracy bc the barrel and rifle itself are mated together improving rigidity. Like welding front and rear lugs to a Garand - It’s more rigid. Wow the recoil is nothing and that stock trigger was always a good one. I swapped a Geisselle into my X95. There aren’t any tensioning screws in my rifle so it’s not gonna be as accurate as the WLVRN. Hopefully the new rifle here will be a great one. Accuracy testing would help prove the 30% claim. Good video. 👍
Thanks for the review. The safety knobs in the MDRX are small and sharp. Have they improved them in the Wlvrn? They look about the same in the video nd there’s no aftermarket upgrade afaik.
I'm still waiting for my MDR preorder from SGT CROOK, over at Bullpupforum.
Great looking rifles, and the the crew are great folks to deal with. I do think its funny how everyone poo poos on the IWI bullpup, yet the upgrades are IWI like....
Compare it to T7 and beat it up - high volumes of fire, and gauntlet test!
Real shooters love ❤️ Recoil!
hope reliability is good. interesting for hunting and all purpose
I wish they would offer the forward eject as an optional upgrade, and I really hope they plan to make a version with the q-mag support.
