Keep in mind that some types of wood are easier to split when wet. Oak, for example, is a popular hardwood that’s easier to split when wet. When initially harvested, you can split wet or green oak without waiting for it to dry first. For most softwoods species, though, you’ll probably discover that dry wood is easier to split.

I was working with my granddad for the bulk of the autumn and winter cutting down trees and splitting wood for the stove. We would also sell it so we had to maintain a face cord at all times if we wanted to keep up. I would load the trailer, unload the trailer, then split the wood. I did this for 5 months when my grand dad finally decided he would help. He pulled a tarp off of what I though was a generator that had been there since as long as I could remember. It was not a generator. It was a hydraulic wood splitter.

Sometimes even if you store your firewood in a basement or something, the moisture will remain a bit. It won't be wet, but a very subtle damp. It just comes off as a bit cold. Ironically in order for it to burn well you may have to burn something else to dry the firewood to make a proper fire with your logs. Wood can be very weird and sensitive.

It depends on the wood, but in Canada, many softwoods (and Alder) split better once left for a short time. The outside dries faster and creates a stress inside the logs between the outer and inner. If you leave it too long, the log may split or check, buy it can be really hard to split through because the stresses go all the way through.

@@themagnus2919 the term wetwood technically describes an arboreal disease that kills trees. Colloquially in some places it refers to wood that has been cured and then rained upon. In other places it means wood that has not been cured properly. Either way the word greenwood and wetwood are interchangeable depending on the geographical location within which you reside. So I will stick to saying greenwood, uncured wood, and I will use the term wetwood for wood that is cured but got rained on lol.

I have always found freshly cut straight trees to be easier to split than dry wood. It seems ready to pop apart when you strike it. Dry wood wants to stay together and not pop apart. Of course, the variety of tree makes a big difference. Trees like hickory and maple have wavy grain which is hard to split, wet or dry.

We used to ring a couple trees every year in the winter to get standing dead and it would be bone dry by the late summer. Ringing is where you take a saw and cut an inch or 2 in a ring around the tree because it's the outer layers that move moisture up the tree, the priority picking the trees went diseased first, damaged second, too thick of a population and lastly healthy trees.

Wet wood also burns much slower and it will hiss when put into a fire as the moisture becomes heated and seeps out . Also in ireland we have elder trees which burn so slowly that if you don't have a good balance of fuel it will just chare and smolder for hours .
I use wet elder whole rounds late at night in a good fire so the elder is basically several large embers in tye morning I can add some dry fuel to and blow on to start a new fire from the embers of the night before

Here on the East Coast we generally burn hard wood, primarily Maple. We cut it and leave it with the limbs on for a year. The following spring junk it and split and leave it to dry in the wood crib all summer, ready for winter. I have a large well insulated house and burn 6-7 cords to heat the house and hot water using a wood fired boiler. The hydraulic splitter doesn’t mind if it’s wet or dry.

The reason why water makes wood difficult to split is due to water not being able to compress, not inherently just the added density.
