  • In this oil painting tutorial I'll show you how to block-in a landscape oil painting using acrylic paints. You'll see what colours you need to block-in the landscape, how to mix acrylic colours and the different brushes to use for blocking in. Plus, my lovely son makes a special appearance to help me paint.

A way of blocking in using oil without losing productive time waiting for the blocking in to dry is to work on several paintings at the same time. Begin one painting each day and there will always be a dry painting to work on.

Michael...I discovered your website about a month ago and have been immersed your tutorials ever since. I think I have seen a few of them 5 times; maybe more. Not only is your work visually stunning...but your instructional technique is terrific. I learn something new every time I roll a lesson. I hope you intend to continue your workshops because they are truly exceptional.
    Thanks.

I want to thank you for making these videos, they are very helpful and your paintings are wonderful. I was brought into the artists world at a young age by an artist by the name of George Craven in Michigan and my daughter is also into doing artwork and it makes me smile to see your son helping you paint. Please keep up the beautiful art work!

Quite obviously you have a Artist in training. As usual Michael you provide excellent instruction. I do have a question tho. Do you need to spray water your acrylic paint while your painting or does the blocking in go fast enough that you don't have any drying out?

What is the main difference between oil (dry slowly) and acrylic (dry quickly)? Why doesn't acrylic need to clock in while oil needs? Thanks for the tutorials and nice paintings.

hello from North Carolina. I love your talent, your humor and your paintings... most of all I really appreciate your willingness to share how to make beautiful art. I was driving home from work today admiring the tall holly bushes with red berries on them and the Carolina Sapphire blue fir trees. I found myself thinking, "I wonder how Michael would paint these!" Have you painted non-deciduous trees? If so, which number video? I don't think I can include pictures in the comments, so if you don't know these beautiful trees/bushes, you could google them and let me know what you think. Thank you and God Bless you! Diana

thank you michael, can i block in with gouache too ? and does it matter if i use a brush with shorter bristles than yours? My brush strokes for waterplants struggle with poor consistency as the thin line it paints breaks through, and if i dip into more paint the stroke would be too thick. Should I adjust it with medium, longer bristled brush, or try a different paint?
