To think that Kazuya went from cursed protagonist (T1) to conflicted antagonist (T2) to gone, to embittered antagonist (4-5) and is now just straight up evil. A part of me really hopes that theyre playing it as Kazuya is taking the back seat to devil and not that he just rolls with it now.
Honestly though, bringing Kazuya back as a conflicted man now that the main source of his hatred is gone would be an immensely good move for T8 I feel. He's easily the most (or was the most) complicated character in Tekken.
Goddammit I love the lore of Tekken. Please don't ruin it. Please revive the conflicting alignment and symbolic level design/music. T7 had brilliant combat but it lacked the soul of the earlier games. Especially 2, which personally I think was the epitome of Tekken.

    • @ilcapitano648
      @ilcapitano648 Před 5 lety +77

Narowe I wish I could like this comment twice just for the part about Tekken 7 not having the soul of the older games. 7 is a fantastic game but content, story and lore-wise, it’s a bad Tekken game. I really hope in Tekken 8 they go back to treating the lore with as much respect and care as Soul Calibur 6 did.

    • @kronksstronkstonks6360
      @kronksstronkstonks6360 Před 5 lety +81

Yeah mechanically T7 is awesome, but it somehow manages to lack the story of the previous games, despite the earlier games having only a few cutscenes to tell them. To get around these limitations they made locations and themes for the characters that they somehow managed to make fit the characters perfectly.
Look at the final stage of Tekken 2 for instance. The mirrors and reflections are to imply an introspective struggle (storywise this is Kazuya fighting the Devil gene within himself) and the music mimics this struggle by being a much more sinister and deeper remix of Kazuyas theme.
Hell even the costumes spoke volumes. Heihachi was always a traditional head of a martial arts clan despite being the head of a corporation, Kazuya had distanced himself but still wore the studded gloves of the martial arts. JIn wore the more conservative gear that you would expect of a student. Lei wore his cop uniform or a CID variant and Paul wore his Martial Arts garb whilst Law wore his damn work clothes or martial gear.
Then look at Tekken 7. Everyone wears a variant of some form of suit, military garb or archaic ensemble. The Story is alright but has none of the bitterness and self-conflict that the earlier games exhumed (even with Heihachi facing off against Kazuya, and learning of Heihachi's wife felt less powerful than it could have been). The locations are nice looking but with very few having any significance to either plot or individual characters, and the music... Don't get me started. I don't hate electronic music, but having very little variation in songs and having them disconnected from the story and characters, instead going for just being hyped and fast paced isn't a good thing.
Dsmn i went off on one there... I wasn't really old enough to appreciate just how amazing Tekken used to be (23 yo and my stepdad owned the first Tekken on PS1, and I collected each and every one afterwards minus Tekkn Tag Tournamnent 1 or that strange Nina fighter game that was released), but its a very important series for me nonetheless and despite my love for it, i still think it could be going in a better direction (But im neither a game Dev or aware of what they're planning for the series so what I think is best isn't exactly the best).

As you corner him, the tone changes from lighter tone into darker tone as his true nature is revealed. Not just the devil but the monster of a man he has become. The dark & ominous atmosphere together with slower tempo, piano & the wind in the background fit together perfectly as you struggle against this nightmarish entity. The whole final battle against Kazuya/Devil overall is a great example of how you can make not only a excellent fighting game boss battle, but also how to design a boss battle in general.

That shit went even further when the Devil came in to the picture and he turned far more ruthless than Heihachi ever was. But since he's apparently the protagonist in Tekken 7, I think he's more of a byronic hero than actually the big bad of the series. He might be the worst of 'em, but anyone tough enough to take on Heihachi is practically the hero. Haha! Maybe he'll be the main antagonist in Tekken 8? Who knows.

The Devil theme fits the tragedy of Kazuya's character especially with what we learned in Tekken 7. Heihachi hated Kazuya for inheriting his mother Kazumi's Devil Gene even though Kazuya was an innocent kid who'd done nothing wrong but Heihachi projected his hatred of Kazumi for trying to kill him onto Kazuya even though Kazumi only tried to kill him because he already wanted power and world domination before he met and married Kazumi and had Kazuya with her and she and her assassin clan the Hachijos foresaw the threat he posed and would pose so they sent Kazumi to kill him and at first she only married him to get close enough to kill him but along the way she grew to genuinely love him and they had Kazuya together. Kazumi thought her love and Kazuya being born would get Heihachi to give up his ambitions but they didn't and she realised that the only way to stop Heihachi was to kill him so before she set off to face him she made a deal with Akuma who she'd once saved telling him to kill Heihachi if she didn't manage to and to kill Kazuya if he ever became evil like his father no matter how much she loved the both of them. Then she went to kill Heihachi but failed and he instead killed her. Heihachi throwing Kazuya off the cliff both to see if Kazuya had the Devil Gene and test if he was strong enough to inherit the Mishima Zaibatsu by daring him to climb back up to prove that he was truly his son was sick.

It feels it hammers home how pointless the entire feud really was. I don't know if this was necessarily intentional considering it's just a fighting game, but part of what I got from Tekken 2 is that if you were actually a fighting game protagonist obsessed with the pursuit of power and strength above all else it would lead you down some very dark paths
That being said, even if it isn't that deep, it at least does a better job at conveying emotion than any of the Tekken games with spoken dialogue funnily enough

Why isn't Tekken music still like this? T2 was the absolute prime of audio design for the series. The amount of depth, personality, and character in the stages and sound effects made Tekken 2 feel so much bigger and more meaningful than it was. The mechanics of the games has improved significantly over the course of time, and yet, somehow, the audio design has taken a nosedive into unremarkable mediocrity. Some songs are good and some sound effects are cool, but nothing is Emotionless Passion or Be In The Mirror or As Bald As.

      Traps Are Gay
Agreed, i didn’t like Tekken 6 when it first came out, those weird and flashy characters such as Bob and Alisa weren’t that great in my opinion, also, the fact that the story mode was just an afterthought and the actual story was shown in Scenario Campaign just seemed strange.
I still had fun with it tho, it wasn’t nearly as good as Tekken 5, but at least it still felt like Tekken, the characters could be taken seriously and all their stories felt relevant.
Tekken 7 on the other end feels like a different game, the campaign was complete shit aside from the prologue and the ending, because, let’s face it, all the other stuff was filler, they could have left in just those two fights and it would have been the same (but at that point everyone would have got angry at them for making them wait years for a two fights campaign).
Also, the whole story is a retcon, didn’t Heihachi throw Kazuya off a cliff because he thought he was too weak? Didn’t the Devil Gene originate from Jinpachi? Heihachi was just a maniac, but they needed to make him look like the victim in T7, because otherwise no one would have felt sorry for him.
Also, what’s with Akuma? Why now all the characters that aren’t Mishima related feel one dimensional and uninteresting? Was it really necessary to make every music track a bad dubstep/house/drum and bass?
      Why the rage arts?
There is a lot more, but this comment is going on forever, so i’ll just stop here.

Kazuya is still feeling waves of sorrow to be honest. In Tekken 7, for the first time mind you, he finds out that his mother wanted him dead too. So, whatever trace of humanity that keeps him tethered had to have been torn even more after hearing that. Remember, the Devil in Kazuya was taken over in Tekken 4, so his human-side is still very much in there.
Honestly... I would love for this song to make a comeback, and for Kazuya to have a fight with either Angel, Jin, or an Incarnation of his inner-demons.

@@fredcomms_ Tekken 4 kind of retconed the "turning to further the dark side" thing Tekken 2 was going for with the devil gene. But Kazuya was a despicable cold-blooded man even in the Tekken 1 manual, and him being the big bad was always what he wanted.
As far as I know, Kazuya's struggle with the devil gene is similar to Jin, embodying the violent urges that manifest as power. Note that their devil gene was not always a struggle for them, but rather it triggered when they faced serious abuse/betrayal and they only struggle with it when their anger and hatred is at all time high (but for Kazuya, that's 24/7).
Tekken 4 explains that Kazuya was able to control his devil gene due to G Corporation's meddling with his biology after he was brought back from the dead. Kazuya and Devil are mentally consistent now, and he has full control of the devil gene's power. In Tekken 8, it's heavily implied that Jin will be able to do the same.

MrFireCowboy That's called symbolism, I am pretty sure that was intended. Japanese mythologies usually consist of conflicting battles within (which takes from Buddhism/Shinto Buddhism). The battle of good vs evil to try and find balance and claim your inner peace. Kazuya wasn't really all that bad, the Devil made him do most of things and has morphed him into something else. Hence "the curse of the Devil gene". Tekken 7 will explain where it came from and who passed it on (Heihachi's wife).

I have a theory about this stage and what it represents. When Kazuya made the deal with Devil in order to survive and defeat Heihachi, he became a vessel, a host body, for Devil. The devil feeds off of Kazuya's anger, but also fuels it at the same time. Heihachi is the source of all of Kazuya's misery, and the Devil keeps him fixated on that. Kazuya's anger is the source of all his strength and motivation. The Devil gene doesn't literally give Kazuya power, it fuels his anger and his anger gives him strength. When Kazuya fights Heihachi at the end of Tekken 1, all that anger and strength is unleashed, and he wins. This is the power the Devil grants, but it comes with a terrible price. Kazuya spent so long being driven by anger that even when the source of it is supposedly gone, he still can’t let go. He must continue to fuel his anger, he doesn't know how to live otherwise, so he takes it out on the world. He becomes the ruthless leader of the Zaibatsu, and announces another tournament because he wants to take his hatred out on even more people. Ironically Kazuya was a better person when Heihachi was around, because his anger was controlled and focused on one man, and this stopped him from being needlessly ruthless to others, hence why he's a neutral character in Tekken 1. While Kazuya is being controlled by an outside force, it’s completely due to him willingly letting hatred and power consume him. When the Devil takes full control of him at the end of Tekken 2, it represents Kazuya’s hatred fully taking him over, as his name is changed to Devil not Devil-Kazuya. The devil gene isn't what makes Kazuya strong, just like it isn't what makes him evil. The devil gene is just the curse of inescapable anger. This is why the final stage in Tekken 2 features steal floors and an endless darkness, it's a prison. Kazuya is now a prisoner in his own body, the fight in front of him echoing infinitely throughout his mind.

Kazuya: you’re right. But, it seems like this is the only way.(gets in to fighting stance)
Jin: The Mishima Curse, ENDS HERE.
    The fight begins: one round.
When both are at the halfway point:
Jin: ok, time to get SERIOUS(transforms into DEVIL JIN)
Kazuya: hmph, pathetic.(also turns into devil)
    Fight continues: Jin is weakened
Kazuya: time to die......son(goes for killing blow)
Jin:huaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.(becomes controlled devil Jin from blood vengeance)
Jin then does a new rage art(how you imagine it)
Jin: the curse is over now(aims a punch to his chest)
    *a hand grabs Jin’s arm*
???: (in a gentle voice) no my son, don’t.
Jin: (suddenly back to normal) who are you.
    (A hooded figure is seen)
???: how could you not recognize......
(Takes off hood, it is revealed to be none other than JUN KAZAMA, mother to Jin kazama, lover of Kazuya Mishima) your own mother.

they make you fight devil as heihachi cause he is a real cool end boss, but only kazuya fight in his head. He lose again and again against that fantasmed heihachi until giving in to devil.

But tekken team did answer before while Mishimas are indeed paranormal beings, Kazuya didn't receive the Devil gene from them and this left fans clueless about it. And this was around Tekken 4 and 5 I had idea of where it might came from sense they been so quiet about the topic for over 2 decades.

If only Namco put in a lot of effort to the newer Tekken games like they did with Tekken 2 (up to Tekken 4?), where almost everybody doesn't have a joke ending or storyline. Soul Calibur always had great writing, bonus/joke character or not. I like the awesome gameplay of the newer Tekken games but having good character writing makes me attached and love the character even more but maybe that's just me.
Heihachi saving Kazuya from Devil was far better than sending the other Mishima to space, floating in space with Kuma.. or being humiliated by Lee.. What the fuck, Namco?

I can imagine in Tekken 8, during the battle between Jin and Kazuya for the final time, their fight ends up in the same Mirror room where Devil once revealed its true form in Tekken 2. In a manner similar to Kazuya and Heihachi's final few punches against each other, Jin would begin striking Kazuya, but for every punch or kick he makes, we can see that Kazuya's Devil Gene slowly disintigrates and leaves his body. Kazuya would do the same to Jin's Devil Gene in retaliation. As they take turns punching and kicking each other, this theme plays in the background, as some of the Devil's Essence leaves each of their bodies and materializes into a flashback showing all of the malicious, heinous and corrupt acts they both committed in their lust for power, control and revenge back when they were still possessed by Devil. As soon as both of them have only one quarter of the Devil Gene in their respective bodies, they both go for one final punch, but suddenly fall to their knees in shock at an Angelic-esque presence. This is revealed to be the doing of Jun Kazama, who, after learning about what happened to her between Tekken 3-7, has come to interrupt her husband and son's battle to the death in a final attempt to purify them completely.

my theory goes a little something like this: Heihachi just threw Kazuya into the volcano, he survives and he is in some sort of sleep. During the events, Jun Kazama had just given birth to her son, Jin. Meanwhile, all Kazuya can think about is revenge on his twisted, unstable father. 10 years later, the devil gene somehow revives him and takes him out of the "sleep." Another 10 years later, the G-Corporation took things from there and put his body in a cryo pod, they rebuilt a new body to replicate the effects of the volcano and look like what Kazuya would have looked like 20 years after. this event takes place when Heihachi shoots Kazuya's son, Jin in the back of the head after defeating Ogre. Unleashing Devil Jin in the process. 2 years later, Kazuya wakes up and is conscious for the first time in 21-22 years.

+Xavery B. It doesn't slow down because it's limited to 5 reflections and is limited to a very small square, rather than taking up half the screen like the other backgrounds do, so it doesn't take too much memory bandwidth to write, nor much data to store. Still very impressive programming for the time and the hardware.
