  • Welcome back to IN Organic Farmer! This video was filmed on November 4th & 7th, 2023. In this video, I am shelling organic corn with our 2020 John Deere S780 combine and 8 row John Deere 893 corn head. I talk about the average yield of the organic corn fields, what weed control measures were used, and the corn varieties that were used. Thank you all for watching! If you haven't already, please subscribe! That helps me to know that you want to see more of my videos!
Here is the data from my plot. All loads were weighed in the grain cart scales and were replicated three times. Yield is figured in dry bushels (15% moisture).
Great Harvest Organics 5077GH: 198 BPA average
Blue River 49M23: 194 BPA average
    Pioneer P0075 (Non-GMO): 218 BPA average

one thing you could to push yield ,is when you cultivate, try putting on a foliar spray of organic fertilizer.. its just an ideal.. ggod luck

How are you handling the thistle? I haven't found a good way to get rid of my patches. If I can get the oats off early enough it gives me a chance to disk the thistle but it still seems to persist. I'm thinking to put various other short season crops like peas or buckwheat in there but there's a pretty steep financial cost (loss relative to corn/beans) to planting those crops. If I had animals I'd consider pasture.

Good question! I am actually taking that second field out of row crop production for a year. I am trying to choke it out with sorghum sudangrass. I have heard some success with it so I thought I’d try it. I will just be flail mowing it back on to the field so there won’t be any income from that field this year. Hopefully it works! I will find out soon enough.

Wife and kids and running a farm. CZcams doesn’t pay the bills. I do what I can to help people understand organic production. This is just a hobby.

Some people aren’t as comfortable talking in front of a camera as others. I will do my best to work on that.
