I have a 24 round that holds about 14,500 gallons and use this exact chlorinator. I keep the dial set at 5 and put 5 tabs in every Friday morning all summer long. My pool is always clear and usually tests good every week with no issues. Keep in mind I run my 1 1/2 horse pump through a sand filter everyday from 7am until 7pm

Glad it works for you. I hope you’re using Cal Hypo tabs because Trichlor is evil. Each Trichlor tab adds around 2 PPM of stabilizer (CYA) in your pool. You only need 20-30 PPM for the season.

      Start here… www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/how-to-chlorinate-your-pool/
The more you read on that site, the more you’ll understand why I say Trichlor is evil. Every tab increases CYA in your pool, which makes your chlorine less effective… so you need to add more chlorine to provide effective sanitization. More Trichlor adds more CYA so you need even more Trichlor. It’s like getting you pool hooked on crack, where every hit increases dependence but reduces the effect.

Pipe cleaner is NOT primer. It does slightly break the surface to allow it to be thoroughly cleaned, but isn't an actual primer. Primer chemically reacts with the PVC.. there is an actual reaction that softens the plastic and begins off-gassing. There is then is a specific chemical reaction between primer and cement that must occur for a proper join.. that doesn't happen if you only use cleaner.
If you want confirmation, dab a tiny amount of cleaner on your finger.. then dab a tiny amount of primer on a different finger... the primer will start to BURN after 15-30 seconds or so.. because it has different chemicals in it that are actively attacking your skin. Use primer if you want a proper PVC fitting. If you are worried about the visual, Oatey makes clear primer.. beige label just like the clear cement. If you want to cut corners and save time or money by eliminating one of the 3 steps, then eliminate the cleaner. Primer can do what cleaner does almost as well (although the contaminants it takes off of the surface then end up IN the weld, which is the point of a separate cleaner product).. but cleaner CANNOT do what primer does.
A more in-depth description is... a proper PVC joint is NOT a glue joint. It is a plastic weld. The cleaner eliminates grime and scours gloss off of the surface. The primer penetrates the plastic, softening it on both sides of the joint, prepping the surfaces to chemically bond together. The cement bonds with the reaction on both sides of the joint, fusing the plastic together.. not just gluing it together, but fusing it like a weld fuses two pieces of metal.

Just remember that adding more pucks will increase the chlorine (and CYANURIC acid) that flows into the pool at any given setting on the chlorinator as more pucks will be dissolving at the same time. I put about four 3” pucks a week into mine for my 21000 gallon pool. I’d like to install one of those chlorine genies in order to use saltwater to add chlorine without having to have the whole pool be saltwater but they are crazy expensive.

    • @handydadtv

It’s a necessary evil. The chlorinator is great when you’re going to be away. But stabilized chlorine raises CYA and makes chlorine less effective, so you need to use more, which raises CYA more, etc. So it’s like getting your pool hooked on crack.
