- A basic build of Airfix's 1:72 scale Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.1 scale model kit, in time-lapse style including tips and tricks for beginners. The quirky Defiant 'turret fighter' served the RAF in the Battle of Britain, but due to it's lack of forward firing weapons it became an easy target for Luftwaffe fighters. It excelled, however, in the role of a night fighter.

I'm getting tired of the "professionals'" condescension and dismissal of less-than-perfect kits. But none of that here! You seem to enjoy this hobby as much as you viewers. Watching you paint and then "tidy up" after shows you understand who we are and where we're at. So inspiring - you just love it, dont' you!
Hi everyone! You may recognise the footage from the commission I did for Airfix at Christmas, but I hope that this video adds something extra to that. This was filmed at university hence the lack of supplies and a proper work station. Stay tuned for when I build, paint and weather the Boulton Paul Defiant to my usual standard. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this!

Superb work! You've shown how to get a good result from the starter kit - no bells, no whistles, just exactly what it says on the tin... er, pack! I'll bet Airfix are more than happy with the result. I work in a High school and run an Airfix club. I'll definitely be showing this to the students - All power to you!

Thank you so much, you really showed me that even with regular paint brushes and enamel or acrylic paint thin down or watered, that you can still make a great looking model without expensive supplies such as an airbrush, thank you so much it really helped me get back into modeling

Very good. I haven’t built an Airfix since I was 12 (55 years ago). Now, lockdown I’m really thinking of doing one again. The video is great and your commentary excellent. At times I wanted to see certain bits in real time just to be able to see your technique closer.
After many many years away from modelling I have been inspired to start again by people like you. I have chosen this model because it's a slightly quirky aircraft and a good basis of a Battle of Britain collection. I will report back on how I do. I am doing a lot of my painting 'on the sprue' do you have any observations?
This is a perfect basics guide Owen. There are a number on YT, but most I have seen are still quite in depth and not nearly as "basic" as well as being in several parts. I have recently taken on the running of the aero-modelling project at my local Air Cadet Squadron and some of the cadets are complete beginners and I intend to show them this video as a perfect guide on how they can tackle their first models. Great job. Very nice to see basic out of the box building. Watrrbased acrylics give us more optikns without hazardous fumes ftom oil based lacquers and enamels. Also nice to see techniques that do not require an airbrush.
Stopped building 30+ years ago due to lack of time ( job, family, etc.), been trying to start again but get intimidated by all superdetail after market stuff. Have 20+ year stash of unbuilt kits to try to get to now. Have to get it done soon as wife wants to downsize and move to senior home community, that might mean losing lots of unbuilt kits (tiny senior home appartments with no storage).
How you manage to balance getting rekt and working at uni with spending the time to make model kits is beyond me.
Also amazing what you can get from a starter kit

I like your paint job. I used to use an airbrush on my model's exterior and a liquid masking compound on the canopy or glazed surfaces. I also used Letra-set dry transfer decals on most of my aircraft. Those that I applied wet decals I also used a product called Solvaset that softened and allowed the decal to conform to the model without the silvering effect. It helped to cut the decals from the sheet as close to the colored portion of the decal as possible.
I really liked this video because you show how with basic tools and paints only a very nice looking model can be made. I like that you mentioned that to improve the model you can see your other videos which are really helpful. It is good to see another video from you and as always your channel is first class.

Great video for beginners
I had this kit many years ago. It came in black plastic, which as it was used as a night fighter made sense, less painting required.
Owen this video is brilliant for beginners because it's not too complicated and advanced for them to understand what you're doing or did! I will show this to as many beginner modelers I know! 😃

Since this is "limited tools and equipment" build you can use things that can be found around the household.
As a substitute for gloss coat before applying decals acrylic floor polish can be used. It has to be colourless and not scented (i.e. no "Orange scent) though. I used "Acrylic floor wax" by Lundmark with great results. It has milky colour but dries perfectly transparent. It is also very thin so it's easy to apply and doesn't leave brush marks. I also used it to dip transparent parts in it to improve clarity.
To help decals set alcohol can be used. I use 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. Some modellers use 40% vodka (of course, it has to be pure, i.e. not coloured or flavoured). Others yet use vinegar. Again, it has to be clear, like "spirit vinegar", and not some fancy red vine vinegar. All decal sheets have unused stuff (like company or kit name, decal numbers etc) that can be used to experiment with aforementioned liquids. Of course, care should be taken because all alcohol is highly toxic, especially 97% isopropanol.
Good ideas!
Also, for safety, be aware that alcohol, including isopropyl alcohol, is very inflammable; and if memory serves, its flames are nearly invisible.

I did this one 2 weeks ago - great little kit! I painted it all black and did it as a night fighter though.
+jakemonster001 I've got the original model - you can see the cockpit through the wheel wells! I finished that one all black. This new one I finished as the day fighter version. Not bad.
I've build the original too haha, as you say the cockpit was visible through the wheel wells and not through the clear plastic because it was so thick

Great build as always Owen, I wish you would slow some detail areas down like the cockpits and other techniques you use. Really enjoy watching your work and I always learn something new.
as beginner I find this video pretty illustrative. I have bought the same kit so my intention is just following your steps. I would suggest you to make the time lapse a little bit slower as novices like me can loose some parts if frames go too fast. Thanks for your effort!
Your paint thinning tip's a good one. You get great results with Humbrol acrylics, which are probably not terribly well-loved in general! I like them though, the matt ones anyway.

One of my favourite aircraft builds! Made diorama of RAF night fighters ie the Defiant x2 against ME110 white LED to simulate moonlight! My ex wife stood on it! :( Must rebuild!

Hi, just a quick tip to prevent silvering of the decals is to apply watered down elmers glue as it acts as a decal fix.

Brilliant that you over paint the clear parts them use a piece of sprue to touch it up for the final product.
Nice build. As I said the other day, I am going slowly back into modelling after a 30+ year break. Things are so different, better kits, more choice (and accuracy) Acrylics, which weren't around then. Just the price of the kits has shocked me a little, but I suppose taking the intervening 30+ years into account, they are probably a fair price and comparable in financial real terms over the years from what money (say £20) bought you in the 1980's, to what £20 buys you today.
fair enough lol. You could do two videos, the one you do and you buying and setting up an airbrush and learning to use it with CZcams. as I'm sure lots of people would love to see that. any how, keep up the good work my friend

Masking & Painting Canopy or clear parts
I use the following, bond for woodworking (aqueous vinyl acetate resin type emulsion type adhesive) use
Coloring with watercolor paint is possible. Apply thickly, spread using a thin bar and surface tension.
After painting drying, it becomes easier to peel off when warmed up

Hi Owen Ireally like ur videos and I'm new to scale modeling, I have made a Curtis's tomahawk IIB as my first ever kit and its pretty nice seeming I didn't know much. I would really love to see a how to brush paint camoflauge as I'm not that great at it. Of course I'm learning and I'm doing a Spitfire mk1 right now but again brush strokes and not very well rounded Camo patterns are a problem. Would love a reply thanks mate!

Would a coat or two of semi gloss over the decals help to prevent silvering?
A coat underneath would. Silvering occurs because the surface the decal is applied to is too rough. So, one coat of semi gloss on the model where you are going to apply the decal should do as it will smooth off the surface. Then you can apply a matt coat to seal them and remove the shine (if a matt look is what you're going for)

How do you thin Humbrol acrylics? I'm more used to the enamel myself.
That was a great vid. I used to make airfix when I was younger and then saw this and fate would have it that the Airfix Defiant was in my local hobby shop so bought and made it following the vid. With the advice in the vid, it ended up better than any model I've made before. Now, where's the weathering video? ;-)

A very easy addition for the beginner would be a bottle of decal solvent or setting fluid; helps with that silvering as well as general appearance.

The overall quality of airfix kits seems to have increased massively from what I remember. I am pretty sure my defiant did not have wheel wells or a cockpit and of course raised panel lines all over.

How do you preserve a scale model painted with Acrylic paint? I completed mine but want to ensure that time doesnt take its toll on the paint..

It was a revell kit f4u-5 corsair
It said it was a skill level of 3 out of a max of 5
I have to say it looked great

Hi, I have a question, can we paint using the spray paint? the spray paint that sold in cans usually they used it to do drawings on the walls, can we use this spray to paint the scale?
Hey Owen, I have 3 questions for you.
1. I frequently find that when I glue on my parts that are painted, the paint mixes with the glue and I find it becomes a sticky mess. How do I stop this?
2. I use Tamiya's paints but do you think that Humbrol is better paint for models?
3. Do you reckon acrylic is better than enamel for painting?

1) Make sure that all contact areas are free of paint before gluing - carefully scratch of any paint with your knife.
2) I haven't used Tamiya paints so I couldn't say, sorry.
3) Acrylic is better for the majority of stuff, except blending where enamels and oils are superior. Enamels and oils also get you much better coverage.

If you can only use tamiya acrylics, mix a small amount of dish soap with the paint which helps it flow more easily and slows down the drying time. Make sure that you use dish soap that is made for hand-washing, as dish soap made for a dishwasher contains bleach, and reacts with the ammonia in the paint to form a toxic gas. Dish soap made for hand washing, does not contain bleach, so it is safe to mix with acrylic paint.

i use masking tape to cover the areas i don't want sanded and it works well if you slowly sand it even with lower grits.
Great work Owen. Re - painting small parts on the sprue, does it now leave you with a tiny unpainted part where you have cut the part away from the sprue? Ie, top of pilots head. Then you have to touch up later.
