Been a nurse for years, now retired. Translators have always been an expense but it has never been as bad as it is now. Hilariously, because of the people being hired by the NHS as nurses and doctors you need an interpreter for some of them because you can't understand a word they say. They're supposed to be able to speak English but if it's English I'm a camel.
My mother was deaf and confused after a stroke and some of the carers in the nursing home, I couldn't understand let alone her, and she got so frightened and frustrated because she couldn't understand them or make herself understood.

These people should not be employed unless they than communicate effectively in clear ,enunciated English; this also applies to those with thick local accents . It is cruel to our elderly to not be heard and understood by those allegedly caring for them.

Whilst in Spain at the beginning of the year I needed to have a scald wound dressed on a daily basis for a week and then every other day for a further week. Whilst my GHIC card covered treatment I had to buy the wound dressing and antiseptic cream myself at a local pharmacy. This was politely explained to me at my first visit to the local (state) medical centre and I was more than happy to do this. But this shows how they keep tabs on their expenditures there.
I might add the level of care was second to none. On my first visit I was seen immediately by a very qualified and experience nurse (who spoke near perfect English) and subsequent visits were by appointment and they were always running on time or I was seen early if they were running early and I had already arrived.

When I had a burn a&e in UK put dressing on then they never put any dressing on from the nurse I saw next day. I made an appt at the Drs as I didn’t think it was right and had dressings there after. It was a big blister so no way would it be good to have no dressing on.

Comes from Latin (Roman conquest and all that) - like stadium/stadia. Hated the subject in school, but it's amazing how much it comes up - and the media bunch get it wrong all the time, when the English language is supposed to be their stock in trade.

However, you are right and people do need to talk about it.
The NHS pays £2.00 for 1 paracetamol, when you can buy a box of 16 for about 50p.
So how much do they pay for blankets and sheets?
Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading, went into special measures because they paid over £2 million for a computer system.
They over pay agency staff and a lot of agency nurses are employed by the NHS, but do overtime by working for an agency.

Love your podcasts June, especially this one. I worked for the NHS at our local hospital for 28 years. Gladly retired now. Our department was telecommunications, a relatively small department but the money wasted was ridiculous. An email was sent out one day asking for money saving ideas so me and a few of my colleagues came up with some ideas and sent them in a reply to the email. One particular idea would have saved thousands of pounds, over a period of time, and millions if it was used in other NHS hospitals. Guess what I got for my suggestion? A bottle of wine and a reply to the email for my idea. It was simply a 'box ticking' exercise and nothing ever came from it. Also after working there for over 20 of those years a position was advertised for ethnicity, inclusion and diversity or some crap title like that at a huge salary obviously, which asks the question How did we manage without one before? Anyway I've seen it first hand how much money is wasted. It's been 5 years now since I retired and if anything, according to the friends who still work there, it worse 😮 Keep up the good work June! X

Failing that you will receive a bill and you must claim on your insurance if you have it. However, that is for Emergency treatment only. I have to have Private health insurance as I'm below State Pension age, when you reach State Pension age, you get an S1 from Newcastle and your NHS entitlement can be transferred into the Spanish system. You can also pay into the system if you want to. If an interpreter is required, you have to provide this at your own expense.
