  • Flying our ISTEC Parasailor spinnaker for the first time, as we sail downwind from Virgin Gorda to Tortola, BVI. Then tour the island along with the drone.
    As we sail west to Tortola, the wind is perfect to try our new ISTEC Parasailor spinnaker (228sqm), which Oana managed to find for sale on the internet. We are a bit nervous, but all goes well for a first sail. Not so with the drone, which was not cooperating and used up one of its nine-lives when we try to fly it!
    After snuffling the Parasailor, we make a lunch stop at Sandy Cay, next to Jost Van Dyke Island, then anchor in Cane Garden Bay and have an evening sunset stroll on the beach.
    Next day we move onto a mooring in Sopers Hole and tour all around Tortola in a rental car.
    14-17 March 2019
    Visited: Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Sandy Cay, Tortola, Cane Garden Bay, Sopers Hole Wharf, Nany Cay Marina, Road Town, Beef Island, Camanoe Island, Tellis Bay, Little Bay, Guana Island, Rogue Bay, Brewers Bay, Paraquita Bay, Christian’s bar on Road Town waterfront.

      maybe that particular sail is for dead down we've learned that the shortest distance between 2 points might be a straight line, but the Fastest is slightly hotter angle w main. try an asymmetrical or gennaker. we never sail dead down. or keep doing what your doing, enjoying life and entertaining/ informing us !

      We have now used the Parasailor in everything from 90 to 180 to wind apparent wind angle. And with the Mainsail too. We have tried downwind reaching but in our medium displacement hull our VMG is always faster dead down wind. Lighter boats and dinghies for sure get better VMG downwind tacking. We did have an asymetric previously, but i would not fly dead down wind we sold it and bought the Parasailor.

      We have quite a few vid there of us downwind with poled out genoa. This one particularly, at minute 15;15 czcams.com/video/DbtTBW0eRR8/video.html.
      We find sailing with the wind angle at 150-165 with the poled genoa sailing-by-the-lee, its really fast. Dead down wind with poled genoa we the genoa power gets effected by dirty wind spill-off the mainsail.

    Good video. Really enjoyed it. And terrific to see a Parasailor on a monohull. We flew one off a catamaran many over three months of sailing. I wasn't sure if it would work on my monohull. I very much appreciate your video. And you got to one of the sweet spots, sailing off the wind with it. Took us a couple of months before we tired that.

    I so appreciate your efforts to launching the parasail/spinnaker. It can be a lot of work but my goodness, was it ever worth it. Such a beautiful sail. Loved the shots with the sun behind the sail. Sorry the drone wasn’t behaving, that would have provided some “poster-like” shots of Cloudy Bay. Your attention to detail, in-depth descriptions and editing production of this tour of the BVI’s has been some of my favorites of your work. Thanks for allowing us into your world.

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the thumbs-up on the maps. Thats good to know. Yes, I believe the ISTEC, the manufactuurer in Germany, does indeed employ paraglider wind technolgies into their Parasailor design. The wing gives the sail lift which keeps it full and flying even in apparent winds down to 3knts and makes it incredibly stable. And the hole helps to releave pressure during gusts. All good features for a short handed cruising crew.

    Hi Glen.
    Foxy isn't the entity who placed the mooring balls in most van Dyke . Most of the Island is owned by a private charitable foundation which has been business partners with Foxy for over 20 years. Foxy runs the balls the majority of the income goes to the foundation. The foundation owns Magens Bay St. Thomas, Hans Lollik Islands and many other land preservation properties in the Virgin Island. The foundation has built new libraries, fi re stations, park service buildings. US customs buildings. College grants for thousands of virgin Island students. Help centers for families in crisis. And so much more . We are the good guys. Best Pete
    .

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  Před 3 lety +2

      Pete, many thanks for your explanation on that one. I feel a bit bad now for saying those things. We had picked up a ball there 2 yrs ago on our way back to USA. After the rest of the Caribbean the rates seemed extremely high and the manner the fees were collected left a bad taste with us. And at the same time, the million $ Foxy’s fancy launch passed by. I’m glad now to hear the money goes to good causes and not direct to one pocket. And who can blame the islands anyway. They are over run with charter yachts, so good to get income from them.

    • @peterlamere5328
      @peterlamere5328 Před 3 lety +1

      @@SailCloudyBay The Foundation and Foxy relationship is a good one. Foxy deserves a good. Our Charitable foundation is the largest business entity in the Virgin Island. It is completely unknown to the people of the Virgin Islands. Only a handful of people know of its existence, yet you have visited many of our businesses and marine properties. Its a permanent trust geared for making the British an USVI the nicest place to live and visit in the caribbean. No worries, The Foundation is a secret because the world wants to find fault. So when we give a new super nice library to the people of the virgin Islands, they think their bankrupt government put it up but it was our foundation that donated it. We have donated 5 amazing libraries. Three Firestations plus fire engines and life gear. I live on St Thomas and St John. I stopped going over to Jost myself because I disliked all the balls and fees. Then I found out it was my foundation that payed to have them installed in certain locations so others didn't consessionize our property locations. Jost Van Dyke is entirely a property owned charitable confession of the Foundation which supports grants for higher education for all Virgin Island students. Its built all the new libraries and fire stations. Its building right now the new customs station at RedHook, replacing the St John Customs station. And so much more. Nice talking with you Pete
