  • Geoff Zanelli is a great friend of Film.Music.Media and gave us an amazing look into his scoring sessions for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales that took place at the Sony Pictures Scoring Stage in September of 2016. The goal was to attend and take some photos to release with our planned All Access interview, but we also took a little video footage as well. We hope this raw and minimally edited b-roll/"fly on the wall" footage will give an educational and informative look into the scoring sessions of a major blockbuster franchise.
    Be sure to watch our All Access interview with Geoff Zanelli as well as we go in-depth into not only Pirates but his entire career.

    Honestly, I feel like this film had the second best Pirates score.
    1. At World's End
    2. Dead Men Tell No Tales
    3. Dead Man's Chest
    4. Curse of the Black Pearl
    5. On Stranger Tides

      @@VFXCommander He isn't beating in time but rather just doing interpretive dancing, you can't tell what the downbeat, tempo or overall time signature is from his conducting.

    As a musician, I am quite familiar with this process, and it is challenging, to say the least! The only "Edit Point" is the musical measure, and they are numbered. So if you screw up, the general rule is to go back at least 2 measures before and do it over! Major pain in the butt for everyone which results in monumental recording sessions and over budget production costs!

    Wow. That "bang" at :16, when the lights go off, would have made me bit nervous if I was the engineer, or conductor, etc.

    • @FilmMusicMedia
      @FilmMusicMedia  Před 7 lety +6

      That's actually the sound of the lights turning off so no extra hum is recorded, happens before each take :)

      @taggartjs Před 7 lety +3

      Yeah, I can see that, now. LOL It's just so close to the downbeat, though! LOL Made me nervous. I studied sound engineering at Grove School in Studio City way back in '87, and we used to turn the AC on and off during a session. Having said that, I love these session videos. They're awesome.

      That's because you think that when you read Hans' name he did all the music.
      It's more than a decade than Hans is a Brand more than a composer, with many minions working for him and writing music in his style.
      P.S. this is not even a secret, he openly says that on pretty much every interview.
