  • The Audio Rate Modulator is a highly underrated and underused tool that brings immense joy and results quickly. Here, I show you how to use feedback with the modulation system in Bitwig Studio to create dark, sci-fi-like sounds in no time.

    It absolutely is a feedback loop; going through the modulation system doesn't change anything. This is exactly equivalent to doing it in the Grid with a Long Delay module to allow the feedback connection (because the modulator will use the previous audio buffer when modulating, so you do have a delay that is dependent on the audio settings block size).

    • @TheQxY
      @TheQxY Před měsícem +2

      Are you certain the modulation is not undersampled to 44.1kHz with a fixed block size to make it sample rate and buffer size independent? Seems like an oversight, if not the case. Then, your modulation might sound different if you switch audio settings.
      The Grid Long Delay only allows down to 0.02 ms for this reason, which is the length of one sample at 44.1kHz, even though the Grid itself is oversampled.

      @@TheQxY Feedback in FX Sends is also one system audio buffer behind, so it wouldn't surprise me that they didn't do this for the modulators

      Spent 3 years to learn Music Production on Ableton, started Bitwig in last December, the first month was pain, like i was doubting of the right choice, today i dont regret and i wont turn back.

      @@touarec I made a switch in '22, after more or less 10 years in Live (my first version was 9). What made me switch were modulators and overall stability. Also I had a free license with my soundcart. I still occasionally open Live if I need something from my M4L library and I also teach Live, but I only teach it because the school I work at has Live installed.

    That's some insane 'BrAAAAAAm' power. All you need is a few layers of brass (trombone, tuba, bass-trombone FF) stabs and the Zimmer-Server-Inc. will be purchasing your sample pack!

    Strange, I repeated all the knobs in the video, but for some reason it doesn't sound like that, only if you add gain in audio rate to +15 dB

    Jokes aside, I'm a big fan of Hanz Zimmer, he is awesome composer and theorywise he should use what fits his needs to write sheet music, Cubase is solid choice fs, because it offers ability to write notes alongside DAW workflow.

    feedback sounds were always something interesting. usual feedback, when guitar and mic close to comb, but when output sound also engages the modulation - thats wow !

    Nice! One of may favourite patches with my Moog Grandmother is to use the spring reverb output to fm the oscillators and the filter (you can put it through the highpass filter and attenuator to get it sounding right); you can get these beautiful broken up dystopian sounds similar to your patch here. For some reason I hadn't thought of trying a similar approach in Bitwig though, so thanks for the heads-up!

    I'm not putting Beta programs on my main PC, and my secondary machine is offline.
    I've had Betas cause too many system problems, and that includes Bitwig Betas.

      Bitwig has a crazy toolset. Where it really falls short now in my opinion is just simple quality of life DAW stuff. I really hope 6/7 are less focused on new devices and more on polishing up the core stuff

    Wrong. HZ need a big DAW for big orchestral composing and detailed midi editing plus video support. Bitwig lags in all this important areas. For filmcomposers/sounddesigners it´s better to use a fast workflow film timeline DAW plus adaquate vstis with great modulation possibilities like U-he Zebra or Kilohearts Phase Plant etc.
    Bitwig is more a "random" sounddesign tool (for people with too much time), haha, but it´s a great tool for this, yes of course!
