- With early spring comes one of the best grafting periods of the year. In this video I show you my 3 favorite grafting techniques for this season, which I use to graft figs, apples, pears, plums, peaches, grapes, kiwis, persimmons, loquats and many other fruit trees. Selecting which of these 3 techniques to use in each situation is just a matter of adjusting your scions to the available rootstocks as I demonstrate in each case.

I have a young plum tree (main trunk about 1" across) where half the branches died off (unknown reason) There is one healthy looking branch left. Can I take a bud off this branch and graft it on the main trunk, to effectively even up the eventual fruit tree?
You prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
@Brock Beckham instablaster =)
@Adan Santiago thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Adan Santiago it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account :D
I’ve used parafilm (paraffin wax film) for many years in medical laboratories but never thought to use it for garden uses, genius! Thank you for all the valuable information.
Your best yet video. Bringing all the techniques together and explaining when you use them is invaluable. Also, showing grafts after a year or two is helpful. Your English is brilliant, keep the videos coming!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment and support.
You are just a wealth of knowledge, and skill too. Thank you so much for teaching, JSacadura :)
My pleasure, Inger! Thanks for the comment.
Last year I watched your videos, then got some tools, equipement, and scions and did some grafting. You made it look so easy, I was not prepared for how much learning and practice was required, LOL. But your teaching was very good, and I got almost complete success ratio. One whip and tonque didn't take because I was impatient and tried to take the tape off too soon. Thanks for making these very good videos! I'm working on an apple espalier this year.
Nice work! I have to put a disclaimer on my videos, like the one on the rear view mirrors (objects might be closer than they appear). In grafting, practice is everything. Some of my early grafting work wasn't as smooth, although it worked, nevertheless...Good luck, with your espalier tree and thanks for the comment.
@@JSacadura thank you for great video content. Its my second time i tried to graft apples this spring. Plum and pear tree too. First time it didnt work well - it was already too warm and dry. This time it seemed to me seedlings(small trees grown from seeds) to graft were still dormant but i had to take the risk and grafted them. Weather is warm enough, its wet and all the bigger trees in the garden are already sprouting. So excited to see the results in a few weeks. Its even pleasure to watch the videos, i am so much into it. Thanks again!
Thank you! I am going to try it.
Hi Mr. Grafting Teacher!
This year I decided to learn more about grafting. We have small yard and I am looking forward to learn more from you so I can get the best use of my yard! Thank you so much for your valuable lessons! 💝😌🏡
this channel is clearly underrated...Your technics are pinpoint accurate! Great job!
I appreciate that! Thanks for the comment.
No way you can go wrong with this type of video, whether you are a beginner, an intermediate, or an expert.
Smart use of a single scion for multiple grafts 👍🏾. That was what enabled me to go 50 in a single day.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the fantastic videos. Especially your explanation of skewing the scion to have the cambion to connect at some point has improved my results.
Your channel is the very best in explaining the various grafting techniques and how to do it. I chip-budded Paul's Scarlet onto a white-flowered hawthorn (for bonsai) and I got very good success by following your advice. Thank you. Thank you! 😊😊😊
Wow, fantastic! I am happy the videos were helpful. Thanks for the comment.
Hmmm now I know how and why my neighbors have one apple tree but it produces two different kinds of apples!!
I will be trying this on my trees!!!
Thank you for sharing this!!!
I’ve been looking forward to spring not only so I can do more grafting but also because I knew new videos were coming too, lol. Great info!
Hi, Jared. Spring is an exciting time. I just wish the days had 48 hours, as its difficult to do everything I need and still try to make a video, now and then.😉
@@JSacadura I know what you mean. I tried making a few videos but with my 50-60 hour a week job and all the stuff that needs to get done in the yard it’s difficult for me to set up everything to film anything in particular, especially since I tend to jump from thing to thing sometimes without finishing the last project before the next starts, haha. I seriously enjoy your videos. You do such a great job filming, editing, and narrating them, they are a joy to watch.
You make it look so easy. I need to get one of those knives and start practicing my cuts
A truly gifted and talented orchardist. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Thank you for the quality of your videos, I wouldn't like to repeat but they're really the best I could find on CZcams. I have a great doubt about the best and precise moment for grafting, depending on the technique. For example for the three methods you reported here in this video when do I have the highest probability of success? When the buds start moving, when they start opening, when they've already opened, when the bark is getting slippery? I also wonder, in general, if I have the possibility of choosing when is the best moment for grafting: early spring, when the temperatures are getting warmer, late spring... Thank you very much for everything!
All pandemic season learning from your videos. Don’t have the kind of fruits that you own but trying with citrics and others plants almost all successful grafting. Thanks for your videos. ✌️🙏. Keep tuned
Best grafting teacher on the tube, end of.👍
Dear Sir, Thx.a lot for sharing this valuable information. Stay blessed always. PL.keep it up.
Best examples and explanations ever! Backed up by beautiful videos. Thanks.
Thank you so much for these great videos ! I have learned so much from your videos that I feel more confident on grafting than rooting my fig tree collection! Im having about 95% success rate on my grafts , on the other hand I am having about same rate of success on rooting but than when transplanting the rooted cuttings about 15-20% of them fail. Because of the grafts that I learn to do from your videos, I saved some very expensive scions that I failed to successfully root. Thank you so much again, and please keep them coming!
That was the main reason I invested time in grafting fig trees when, in most forums, people said they had poor results, specially when using whip and tongue. Now, if I want to be sure that I can keep a rare variety, instead of rooting I graft it and whip and tongue is the first technique I use if the scion allows it. The occasional failure is extremely rare and often due to scions in poor condition, to begin with.
THank you. This was a really great video with clear demonstrations.
Your 3 grafting techniques make real sense. Thanks for sharing.
I am grafting kiwis with whip and tounge method and it is one of the most difficult method to master. But your video helped me alot. Thanks from India
It's a bit difficult to master as you found out, but it produces a strong union and the grafts grow quickly. Its one of the method I prefer. Thanks for the comment.
Best grafting information on the internet
Thank you for the video, i did my first graftings today thanks to you!
The best grafting chanel ever
Thank you maestro for all of the detailed videos! You have helped me a lot in starting my own cider orchard this spring. Modified cleft graft turned out to be the most useful for me. -fixie
That's wonderful! Glad I could help. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you, very comprehensive and informative in an easy to understand format for beginners like me.
Have several different types of fig rootstocks growing to experiment with grafting. Yellow Longneck, brown turkey and Sitcelis. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Sounds great! Good luck with your grafts and thanks for the comment.
Another well crafted video with clear instructions and tips. Great work!
That's very nice of you! Thanks for the comment.
I really appreciate your didactic way of explaining the techniques. I am waiting for the olive trees grafting explanations. Meanwhile, many thanks.
Olive trees will have to wait a bit more to be grafted successfully (around here its usually in April).
Thanks. The clearest instructions on grafting techniques I have seen yet
I'm interested in the chip bud technique. It looks like you'd be able to graft to any part and theoretically make a ton of branches where you want, being able make a super bushy tree
inspirative idea!
Tomorrow I plan on grafting my lemon tree with a different variant this video really comes à propos. Great timing, thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your grafting job.
You have still got your fingers so you must be good ! An excellent job , informative and done with precision. Thanks for the video.I used to help my brother do this back in the 1950's -still learning.
Großartig. Auf den Punkt gebracht mit verständlichen Aufnahmen. Vielen Dank. 👏
Watched your video first time, couldn’t stop myself to comment, subscribe and liking the video. Your gardening techniques are precise and accurate. Love your work thanks for the video sir
Wonderful! Welcome aboard. Thanks for the comment and the support.
Fantástico. Obrigada pela partilha, grande ajuda e além disso várias hipóteses.
I tried grafting using your videos and I got lots of success! Very exciting!
I just can’t stop watching your videos! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for sharing. Excellent information and tips.
Thanks for sharing your skilled grafting technics very helpful 👍
My pleasure! Thanks for the comment.
Amazing information thank you so much can’t wait to graft my fig trees.
Gracias por tu explicación.Muy clara e ilustrativa.
Thank you alot sir your videos are full of information .
Your wonderful teaching made me decide to make grafting my new hobby! Truly inspirational! So far I managed to successfully cut myself in my thumb twice 😜 Thanks for showing us your skills! I'll keep on practicing...
I am sorry about that. Be sure to check my video on How to do Safer Cuts - czcams.com/video/-AsaxoqzU88/video.html. The development of control and muscular memory when using a grafting knife takes some time and its best to avoid difficult to do cuts, at first, to avoid injuries.
You have the most informative grating videos I’ve found. Love your work
Glad you like them! Thanks for the comment.
These are the best grafting videos out there. Thank you for making these! I have confidence to graft about anything now. I would like to see some videos about nurse branches to induce rooting, or help high chill prunus varieties to come out of dormancy. Also, dwarfing effects of inverted interstems, etc.
Thank you very much! Very well explained!
Great job. Love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your technic
This is very useful for us thanks so much dear
I'm excited to try to graft fruiting cherry to my 10yr old ornamental cherry in my backyard!
Excellent presentation! Thank you.
Very informative videos i like plants and farming
Good information, although my grandfather was a farmer and we had an apple orchard, some cherry trees, walnuts etc., I had no idea about grafting techniques. I just did a cherry graft yesterday, hope it survives👍
Thank you. Your videos are very helpful.
I think It is the one the best video on this matter, it makes this technique available to much people....Thanks for it. All the best for 20221.
Glad you find it helpful! Thanks for the comment.

Alhamdulillah thank you for the video
Very happy to see this :-) !
😎.Thanks, Daniel.
bravo!
Nice
Dear Sir! Thank you for all your well executed instruction videos. You are really skilled and it's easy to see that you have decades of experience. I would kindly like to ask you if you could make a video of whip and tongue that is really close up. It's seems so easy when you perform it, but much more difficult for us who are amateurs. To really see how you make the second cut and in what angle compared to the first would be great to see. Again - thank you for all your inspiring videos 🤗🤗
Check my latest video - czcams.com/video/XHvcreBnQYI/video.html. I have a few clips about whip and tongue that might answer your question. You can also check this video - czcams.com/video/3nlsAk3nnAY/video.html (lots of detail on whip and graft technique in the first minutes).
Merci pour l'explication
Chib grafting , nice
Nice informative video. Really helpful.
Thanks
Wow
Very good Video! Thank you!
Thank you nice video
j'aime bien merci
Sir i have tried grafting a hundred times but it failed each time. This time u bless me for success
Whip and tongue is my best choice after i know it, even with bigger rs but if the rs is so big then the modified one,
Thanks sir 😀👍
wonderfull thank you sir
Wow, this is the best YT grafting technique that I have ever seen. Your bud cutting sizes is so perfect match. I've fail all early spring grafting in three year in a row. I'm so impress with your grafting. I could not cut the same sizes whip tongue were the cambium to match on my jujube tree . perhaps 1)I did not cut deep enough, 2) can't find parafilm at homedepot or Lowe, i use electrical tape or plastic bag to wrap 3) I did not unwrap the electrical tap after 2 weeks, i expect the bud to shoot out of the electrical tap. Wait 2 month hoping for amiracle. Maybe the tape is too thick. I have watch other youtube vedio say ok to use electrical tape bc it sticks together best. Thank you for sharing your talent to the world, I' m amazed.
1- Practice is the key to make straight cuts that will match and improve your success ratio.
2- Parafilm can be bought from Amazon - Search "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" - from Bemis. Its not cheap but its worth it.
3- Covering the buds with tape is not a good idea, as they can't break it and they will die (parafilm is a special wax based tape that the buds break easily). if you have to use electrical tape, don't cover the buds (when chip-budding) and don't cover the buds above the graft union (when using other techniques, like whip and tongue) and you will be fine.
Thanks for the comment.
@@JSacadura thank you for your fast response. I have wasted expensive fruits scion, I special order it from South east Asia. I never seen your channel before until now. Thank you for educating us. Note: when do you unwrap the parafilm. Is it when the buds start growing or when the bud shoots multiple leaves?.
Very good job
Very good n informative video .Thanks
