I moved to another house. The attic fan is humming but the dampers do not open neither high or low. Maybe the motor?

can you replace the motor without going in the attic?

Depends on the design of the fan, more often than not you’ll be able to remove the louvers and probably do a bit more disassembly to get it down. Sometimes they’re belt driven and the simple answer is no you just have to get up there.

If the motor starts smoking when you turn on the switch would that be the capacitor bad or the motor itself ?

Well I have a better question, about how long after you turn it on does it smoke?

hope you didn't bend the blades or that new motor won't last long

Definitely did, these were my exact thoughts.

Do those motors also come in 230 volts? I am in France and would like to import a whole house fan, and then change the motor here to 230 volts.

Not exactly however I believe you can easily source a 230v motor of the same horsepower

Bending those blades good I see.. no bueno. This will eventually ruin those bearings and possibly screw up the mounting also causing vibrations and rattling sounds. No bueno as I said. When you do this be careful to only pull on the center of the hub where the steel is strong. Don’t put two blades in your lap and hammer away like this guy did. 🤦🏼‍♂️
