great dane wan'st going fullspeed either. I had a GD, when they run full speed they have longer strieds and quicker ones... same would go for wolfhound.
Keep in mind, too, that dogs this size don't have to look like they are running fast for them to cover huge amounts of distance. I have a rather average-sized male wolfhound (35 inches tall at the shoulder, 150 lbs) and he has a 8'7" stride just while he's playing and running in the backyard! So, yeah, it may not look as fast as some dogs, but when each stride covers that much distance, it's still pretty incredible.
Hope your boy is still alive and doing well, mine will turn 3 on july 1st. He's also 35 at the withers but only ~120 lbs. If he's since passed, may he rest in peace and may the memories never leave your mind.
I remember the first time my Saluki met an Irish Wolfhound, he was so excited! Something to run with! Yay! My dog did everything to entice the giant to run. Well, the Wolfhound snubbed him completely.... where upon the Saluki ran at 3/4 pace, 25mph right between the Wolfhound's front and back legs underneath the Wolfhound and strolled off, forever after snubbing the Wolfhound. Their respective owners, i.e., me and the Wolfhound's owner, were in absolute fits of laughter! Sighthounds have a unique hierarchy all to themselves! Ok, story told to me by the owner of the Wolfhound. She would walk the dog and his bitch past a house with a 6 foot hedge every day, and the large male German Shepard who lived there would go crazy. One day the Shepard got out and attacked the Wolfhound bitch on the street. Now, you might think, the famous "gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked" thing might have come into play here, but no, the male stepped around the melee, stuck his head under the Shepard.....and tossed him entirely over the hedge and walked on like nothing had happened. Cool dog. Cool owners too.

I have had both breeds, still have a Great Dane, and Great Dane are great for acceleration but not for long term high speed, Irish Wolfhounds are not that fast but they can keep that speed for long distances. For running around in circles or any type of parcours, the Irish Wolfhound will lose because of there bodyweight wich doesn't allow them to change direction fast. I have seen this years ago when my I.W. (female) was racing around against a whippet. Any time the Whippet changed direction, 90 degrees, it took the I.W. a long time to change direction. But after 2 minutes the whippet was tyred and the I.W. was not.

Both will run about 30+ mph however the great dane is listed at #10 on top ten fastest dogs & the Irish wolfhound is not listed at all. I will say no one puts a Kangal or boz sheperd in this conversation & know for a fact they can run over 35-40 MPH & do this for a really good stretch.
The greyhound is listed at 46mph, the Irish Wolfhound is listed at 40mph and the Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound, 35mph.
