  • Mechanics don’t often complain about getting too many referrals, but a Denver garage says it’s being asked to repair too many cars that are unnecessarily failing state emissions tests.

    TL;DR - Yes! Get rid of emissions testing in all 50 states, for that matter. California, I'm looking at YOU.

    Yes this process is very inconsistent, my 99 dodge ram failed the first time and not even 5 minuted later passed with decent scores no where near the limits so i dont get why they're allowed to test so inconsistently

    Emission test relying solely on OBD2 monitors has added stress to car owners whose OBD2 monitors have shown to be not ready when their cars are taken to the emission test centers. Now, they have to perform all kinds of procedures, which mostly are difficult to complete, to get the monitors ready. If the monitors are not ready, let's say just couple of them, car owners should have the option to get their cars tested through I/M 240 dynamometer or another test which truly measures the pollutants coming from the car's emission. Local governments who require emission test and emission test centers opted not to do this anymore for cars equipped with OBD2 technology. I'm not exactly sure why they resorted to that, maybe because it takes longer or the equipment required for I/M240 are way too expensive to purchase and to maintain. Emission test is no longer an emission test if the only option is testing OBD2 monitors. It should be called emission monitors test or test for a car's emission technology but it should no longer be called emission test per se. OBD2 testing is efficient and clean, yes, but give the car owners an option to get the pollutants coming from their cars' emission actually tested through I/M 240 (or another method that is truly testing emission and not the car's technology) when their OBD monitors are showing not ready especially if they are not throwing any codes.

    I have documented proof of the tests being manipulated to produce failures with the IM240 test. The documentation I have is from the end of 2021. That documentation also shows all of the EPA laws that are being broken. There is also several Colorado laws that are being broken by both the testing centers and also by the Department of Revenue Employees.
    I have also come up with a way to do an undercover report that would show the laws being broken while the test is being done. I would love for a new station to pick this up and run with it. The amount of corruption surrounding anything emissions related in Colorado is mind blowing. If you read the e-mails between myself and the Department of Revenue you would be absolutely amazed by the things they said and how they tried their best to place all fault on myself and my vehicle when I have proof handed to me by the emissions testing center that shows the vehicle is not being operated correctly and how it is being operated is deliberate and not accidental.

    Things to to understand. The catalyst works when it is hot and it's job is to burn off any unburnt fuel, so let the vehicle idle and do no shut the vehicle off while waiting in the line another issue is if you have recently changed your battery or disconnected it, it can clear some of the information needed for the vehicle to run properly and some of the monitors in the computer can be incomplete and will need to be driven... there is something that is called a drive cycle and when the vehicle has been driven in a way the computer in the vehicle is looking for it will complete the drive cycle and "complete" the monitors in the computer to run properly, so only then when those monitors are complete and meet the other requirements then the vehicle will pass emissions. Things that will help pass emissions.
    (Proper tune up) Air filter, spark plug and wires, oil change and filter and having your tires properly inflated, you can also go the extra mile and put a fuel treatment cleaner in the gas to clean the fuel system, however it is best to let it do it's job and cycle a tank or two to insure it cleaned up what it could and is no longer in the tank so it doesn't hurt the emissions not that it could just to play it safe. Also you can clean your o2 sensors, take the catalytic converter off and spray it out with an air blower then flush it with fuel or anything that will clean carbon deposits to insure it isn't plugged up and flowing freely. The EGR valve can also be cleaned with an EGR solvent to increase the efficiency. Hope this information helps someone.

    Here is a little bit of education for the folks out there. California only cares about California and no where else. Because of the smog in LA in the 1970's California pushed the development of a device that would eliminate the smog. The device that was developed is called a catalytic converter. Now look at the name. It "catalyzes" and "converts". OK so now ask the stupid question here is converts what into what?. It converts emissions that create smog into CO2. OK so smog is a local problem and CO2 is a global problem. Remember how I said that California only cares about California. Well they now have the CARB compliant catalysts. A CARB compliant catalyst causes a vehicle to output more CO2 then an EPA compliant catalyst.

    So often Channel 7 almost smear good programs and good people. The testing is very scientific, logical and reproducible within instrument variations. Here is a list that needs to be said:
    1) Measurements have variations. Simple as measuring your room temperature. It could be 79.00F, 79.15F etc. Not fair for Chn7 to criticize measurement variations.
    2) Blaming operator is a going low. Chn7 should publish what failed on the Rav4, and show why and how the test it was unfair. Chn7 has not shown the Rav4 data, yet continues to smear the city officers they interview. That is quite typical of 7 news investigation unit. it NEEDS to change.
    3) The Rav4 clearly had a bad gas cap (emitting raw fume), AND a tail pipe at failing limit. This vehicle likely has a almost failing emission component, and the owner should consider herself lucky to sail by this period. For the next 2 years that the emission test is design to cover, her car WILL be failing the limit SOON, and degrading the air quality we all breathe in.
    4) For $25, she received 2 back to back test, and results did show small variations. One passed one failed. She gets to retest fro free in 10 days. This is more than reasonable. Could the state offer 4 test instead of 3, sure. I'd like that too. The origin of her problem remains, HER car is failing.
    5) There are much more that the state tests, that the on board computer DOES NOT cover. Automotive maker cheats too, such as the and US gov is slow to catch them. So this "self reporting by computer code" is a stretch.
    6) When my 15 year old, it failed Carbon Monoxide/CO by 10% over (at 190k miles). I needed a $50 O2 sensor. Afterwards, the car passed (free retest). It did not pass close limit, it passed beating the limits at 30% of CO, CO2, HC, NOx!!! You name it. The limits are relaxed so to avoid "being unfair". When a car fails, it POLLUTES. It hurts everyone's health.
    7) Sure a another car I commuted with failed and needed a $3000 catalytic converter, ouch. I scrapped the car by seelling it to a junk yard fro $300. The car was worth $1000 at 230k miles.
    ===================
    Hey Channel7, please go after:
    1) Trucks with black smoke.Investigate how those trucks pass emissions. How we see so may trucks "passing" but clearly polluting.
    2) Xcel Cherokee station in Commerce City that still burns coal even Xcel stated it will burn Nat Gas beginning Jan 2018.
    Denver has the 8th worst air quality int he nation.
    It does not have to be.
    You are smearing good people, good program and derailing the real issue in our state.

    • @moabman6803
      @moabman6803 Před 2 lety +3

      The trucks that blow black smoke can be pulled over and ticketed by police if they choose to pull them over. The problem I have with emissions is how strict they are. For example denver has made it illegal to buy a federal converter in Colorado. My truck is old and never came with a converter. I would like to install one, but now I have to shell out far more money for a carb converter if I want to continue to be proactive. I also want to install a more fuel efficient engine in my older vehicle. Even a newer engine with modern efi without cats will be cleaner and more fuel efficient. But Denver will only allow a swap if you carry over all the modern emissions components from the modern engine. This greatly increases costs of a swap and discourages doing a swap that will basically save a old vehicle from being thrown away. Even a vehicle that is 5 years old or so can be modified with more modern aftermarket components to get better mileage and tail pipe emissions. But because they do a under the hood check and demand only factory components you can't do that. In creating laws to make vehicles non polluters, they have also created huge hurdles for those who want to be proactive in non polluting. A simple tail pipe test and gas cap test would suffice.
