What I don't understand is how this gentleman became betrothed to Mary in the first place. I too have little use for material wealth or status, but as a result my circle of friends, casual and intimate, share that world view. I cannot imagine a casual friendship with someone who is wealth ambitious, and that's something that is usually pretty in-your-face. Her vanity was already noteworthy, so how did it evolve into a romantic relationship? A sexual tryst perhaps, but if it proceeded to marriage, something is being omitted or altered in the story.
