I like how miserable Batman seems. Because in reality, there’s no way anyone could pull off that lifestyle without serious drawbacks. Nocturnal, extremely small amounts of sleep, getting physically battered constantly, dealing with the most miserable scum of the earth people every day, etc. There’s no way someone could do all this and then go be some overly charismatic playboy at a party.

Will watch again soon. the narration arc with 'something in the way' playing was truly amazing, some extremely memorable cinematic moments. And in the first narration, seeing the bat-cave and the new technology and his journaling afterwards - I loved the obsessiveness of this batman to his work/craft to the point where it is almost always on his mind.
We also really saw his intellect / detective ability in this film.
And In the ending monologue on hope, during that beautiful almost religious sunset scene - that naration greatly reminded me of the dark knight trilogy. In the beginning of the film he is driven by vengeance, in the end he strives to represent hope.

I think people who are saying “Robert Pattinson’s Batman wasn’t a good Bruce Wayne” are missing the point of character development, which is one of the strong points of this movie.
In this version of events, Pattinson is a young Bruce Wayne who’s bitterness towards his parents’ death and the state of Gotham has led him to become reclusive and antisocial. His motivation to be Batman is purely self-serving. Everyone is scared shitless of Batman, including innocents. Meanwhile, while he’s ignoring his parent’s financial and political empire, the mob and corrupt officials have swooped in to fill the power vacuum. He learns this fact the hard way throughout the whole plot. By the end of the movie, he learns that he must become more than “vengeance” if he wants to fix Gotham. He has to become the hero. The whole ending scenes of him leading people to safety rather than just beating the shit out of bad guys is symbolic of this transition.

another thing a lot of people have forget to mention is that in this reiteration of the story , this batman grew up without closure for his parents and knowing who did that to them. i think this plays a huge part into why he’s such a darker batman since he never received that closure at such a young age

    • @drewb1979
      @drewb1979 Před 2 lety +23

I think the people defending this iteration of Bruce Wayne are missing the point. Why does he ignore his parents' financial legacy and only pursue vigilante justice? This isn't really explained. Did Alfred really only teach him to fight? In all other Batman stories, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire philanthropist who does everything he can with the Wayne name to better the city. The point of his vigilantism and how he justifies that to himself, is that despite all that it's never enough. Even the most powerful man in Gotham can't stop organized crime lawfully when the systems are so corrupt, and this movie fails to illustrate Bruce's philanthropic and good-natured character in lieu of this new vision of a nihilistic and vengeful crusader. That's why people say he's not a good Bruce Wayne.

About the Batman not realising the damage he's causing to the people of Gotham part. .. Isn't that kinda the whole point of the movie though? One of the main points of the movie is that Batman's methods are heavily flawed, he wants to clean the city of corruption and crime but he's going the wrong way about it. He's only doing it through fear and vengeance. To the people of Gotham, they don't know or care about his intentions, he's just more of the same shit to them. You see it from the reaction of the asian guy at the start ("Please don't hurt me") from people calling him a freak, from The Riddler thinking he's on his side, to the Riddler's goon saying he's also 'Vengeance'. He realises in the end there's not much difference between him and The Riddler, both have pretty good intentions and motivations but both are going about it n the wrong way. When he sees the Riddler's followers, he thinks who would the Batman's followers be? Would they be like these nutjobs? Is he a nutjob? Who is The Batman anyway. Then you see him literally being followed by civilians as he is helping them escape and he realises this is who the Batman should be, someone people can rely on, when all hope is gone. Batman was very close to becoming a Villain, just like the Riddler, it was kinda the whole point

    1. The fact that there's no distinction between Bruce Wayne & Batman is probably intentional, the life of Batman has completely consumed him and he's the most reclusive man in the city - pretty much ignoring the issues of Wayne Enterprises.
    2. The main theme/point of this movie is that everything he does is for vengeance, saving lives while still incredibly important to him is secondary. It's only through the final act does he realize that vengeance is only making things worse, and so his main priority becomes the saving of lives & giving hope. This is seen immediately in the following scenes.

I think the best part of the whole film was how Batman was almost an anti-hero. He was more focused on making the criminals of Gotham fear him rather than the people of Gotham feel like he’s a hero and protector. It’s even subtlety hinted at people calling him vengeance, rather than justice. A great example of this is the opening scene where the graffiti artist is shitting himself over the bat signal. He knows that if Batman showed up he’d get his eyes pushed through the back of his skull over a minor crime like vandalism. That’s not justice that’s borderline terrorism and it really showcases what this Batman is about.

Pattinson actually talked about that lack of disconnect between Batman and Bruce Wayne in an interview as something he and the director were interested in exploring as another aspect of a Batman in the midst of his "year 2". He's still at the point of his obsession with his mission that he hasn't even bothered to cultivate the facade day-time personality of Bruce Wayne at all, he's just Batman 24/7 with or without the mask. This is a Batman who hasn't found his balance (as far as someone like Bruce can achieve) with what he symbolizes, both to others and in his own mind. He's just an angry young man with a lot of money and training venting years of pent up aggression and trauma at every justifiable target he can find, he doesn't care yet about keeping up appearances.

We're definitely getting Freeze next. Gotham is going to be rebuilding. Yet another corruption story (like Court of Owls, no offense Seal) would be a hat on a hat. It would feel very unnecessary. We need a villain with personal stakes that don't involve Batman or Bruce much at all. So Freeze would be perfect for that. Joker, even if we excuse every other interpretation, is just not the right villain for the sequel. His stakes are entirely tied to Batman. He's a villain that you bring in once the city really trusts Batman like they did in The Dark Knight. I feel that the sequel is going to pick up just a few months after The Batman with the sea wall having just been rebuilt and people will be returning. If Joker comes in at that moment, well, he wins. A beaten down Gotham can't handle the Joker.

The reason why Robert's Bruce Wayne was very depressed in this movie was because he's still trying to find himself and is still empty. Keep in mind this is a year 2 batman, so bruce hasn't fully found himself yet, hence to why he makes mistakes as batman. Robert's version of bruce also shows how committed he is towards batman therefore, he loses himself in the process of becoming batman. I'm willing to bet the 2nd movie is him trying to find his footing in balancing the two sides of his life without letting one consume the other, and hopefully the villains chosen for that film will test Bruce's ability to keep his 2 lives separate, and deal with the parts that cannot be truly separated.

It’s really cool to see this new, “fresh faced” Batman. His equipment is both advanced and makeshift. The Batsuit is very clearly the 1.0 version. The original prototype before years of upgrades. The Batmobile is even more makeshift, essentially just being a glorified Baja Truck in black paint. I jokingly called it the Ghettomobile because of it’s borderline cobbled together appearance. Yet despite the fact that I thought I’d hate it and its rough exterior, it’s one of my favorites through raw presentation alone. It’s more living monster than supercar. Emerging from the shadows with a sound that’s like the wail of a banshee mixed with the roar of a lion. It’s fucking awesome.
Also Bruce is clearly still stuck completely in the shadow of his family’s death and Robert does a really good job of portraying that. As critical said there is no distinction between Bruce and Batman in this movie. Which is because the facade of Bruce hasn’t been created yet. Robert completely proved me wrong. I thought he’d be a terrible Batman, but after seeing it I can honestly say he does a lot of things as good or better than Bale. He’s absolutely great and a perfect fit for this particular version of Batman.
However the one who really steals the show is The Riddler. The best Batman stories are the ones where the mystery solving comes first. This is the first live action movie where that is taken to heart and it wouldn’t be possible without the Riddler. Who’s very similar in his presentation to the Zodiac Killer. Leaving behind cryptic clues and cyphers, all while taunting his pursuers nonstop. Reveling in their inability to crack his codes. I wouldn’t say he beats Heath Ledger’s joker, but he certainly gives him a run for his money. He’s creepy, competent and always one step ahead of those trying to stop him. Essentially he hits a lot of the same notes.
If they have more stories like this to tell, I’d be happy to see a continuation. However no matter if that happens or not, this movie will still be great. It’s completely self contained and tells it’s own story. Which is a blessing in and of itself.

The lack of "disconnect" between Bruce Wayne and Batman to me is because hes so inexperienced and clearly puts more of his time and energy into Batman than into his public life. People call him a recluse and he comes across as standoffish. Because he's only two years in to his vigilante life, he hasn't found how to balance Bruce and Batman yet.
Same with the batmobile chase. Batman is more of a reckless driver than we've seen him be. He's not crashing into people and is clearly trying to avoid hurting civillians, but he's using the environment in a more reckless way than we've seen. This, too, imo is because of his inexperience and not knowing exactly how to be the Batman that Gotham needs. Its uncharacteristically reckless, but I think that's the point. He's a new Batman and is still getting the hang of things and it results in a reckless Batmobile chase.

You can see the distrust and distance in every scene, Pattinson’s ability to pull a thousand yard stare off so well is haunting. He even says that Wayne cannot even discern between the nights he operates and has to record and remind himself of what happened, which I love showing a Batman that is beginning to break. To be honest, the car chase scene shows how focused Batman is on just taking down criminals, throughout the movie he doesn’t really help people, he just stops criminals, which yea that in turn helps people, but essentially what he does is just be “vengeance” and not “hope”, him disregarding the lives of others, makes me feel like this is his younger years of Batman, just starting out, too full of rage and sadness to be worried for other people, but by the end of the movie he learns he can’t just be vengeance, he must also be hope, which the leading people to safety thing is extremely symbolic to this premise, so to me, it makes complete sense why he disregarded the lives of those people, and who knows, they might’ve lived, it isn’t stated specifically
Also, I’m pretty sure if Batman would’ve stopped chasing him, the penguin would still be causing mayhem on the highway, sense penguin was in front, he was the one causing all of the damage, Batman didn’t really have a choice at this point, I mean he either stops and helps people but penguin is still causing stuff down the road, or Batman stops him asap so even more people don’t get harmed.

The non-disconnect with Batman and Bruce Wayne in this movie says so much about how Bruce has always been Batman all his life even before the cape and cowl than an actual person living in the present in front of the public and the media. During the ending, after he realizes that he should be a symbol of hope for the innocent just as much as a vessel of vengeance for the corrupt and unlawful, we can safely assume that he also realized that he needs to develop the public image Bruce Wayne persona so he can build connections and utilize his family's assets from a law-abiding perspective. It's a really refreshing take on a Batman origin story which is amazing considering we have seen it a hundred thousand times before in past media.

Even when his his younger years as the vengeful, younger and brooding Batman, you can see and even feel the paranoia that each criminal feels when they both see the signal and the dark.
Even Batman here, while fighting doesn’t exactly do Arkham Series evades and counters, instead he tanks hits and just dishes them back 10x more for the most part.
Bruce Wayne is really just super emo and brooding, pretty much just that.
Riddler was also great here. A far cry from collecting Riddler trophies across Arkham and Gotham City. He really just feels like something from the SAW series. That and his breathing is really unnerving.
The Batmobile was great too. The cinema I watched it in had a surround sound-like setup and hearing that thing start up and roar was just an eargasm.
I hope with the ending too that Bruce Wayne changes too in sequels in the future. Where his billionaire philanthropic playboy persona comes to be.

I know this video is about a month old so Charlie might not see it, but anyways here are my 2 cents for anyone that cares.
I've watched a ton of different Batman shows and movies and I've read a lot of different books and comics on the character too. And in the very best, the writer (and artists and animators when it applies) choose to explore a specific aspect of the Batman and his Bruce Wayne persona. The thing about the Matt Reeves version is that the character of the Batman does not yet know how to use the Bruce Wayne persona to his advantage. He does not yet realize that he can use the clout attached to the Wayne brand to further his fight (or crusade rather). Pattinson did a wonderful job of showing how being Vengeance isn't enough, and how that realization makes him despair a little. As Charlie mentioned, the Reeves Batman is supposed to be in the early stages and it shows in the best ways. There you go.

I actually really like the brooding Bruce Wayne. It's always annoyed me that Batman is supposed to be a dark, troubled man, but once he takes the costume off he's a confident playboy. It always made it feel like being dark and conflicted was a part of the gimmick, like it wasn't genuine and was just something he played out when he was Batman, almost as an obligation. So whenever people talk about how dark and brooding Batman is as a character I've always seen it as a major reach. It usually feels like (at least in the live action films) he's brooding and dark simply because he's Batman, and not that he himself is troubled or conflicted in any way. That's just always been how I interpreted it. So it's nice to finally see a live action Batman that feels like an actually tormented man and not a millionaire *playing* a tormented man.

DC hasn’t landed many times with their movies for me personally, but goddamn they nailed this one and I stg they better actually invest in a sequel for this movie because its actually really compelling seeing this conflict between the identities of bruce wayne and batman, in this absolute shithole of a city. Even the development we did get in the film had me wanting to see more of these characters and the batman’s progression as a person. Definitely think pattinson nailed this shit though, felt like the most grounded and “human” batman has been in awhile, which makes sense because he is only human after all, and in this universe is very new to the vigilante scene.

@@yes-gs2rd recent DC movies have all had good box office numbers, but with this one probably being their best box office success in awhile it’ll make it easier for them to continue. Its a completely different example, but the Joker movie did great in worldwide box office but they’ve been silent on any plans for the character to continue (which it’s different with it being a villain, but I felt that the movie was just an origin story, and it would be interesting to see the joker at his peak). You’re most likely right, Im just being pessimistic lol

Remember what happen when he try to play the villain, it just looks goofy af haha.

You make an interesting point about the car chase and the supposed moral dilemma this Batman professes. That's spot on and I didn't even think of it even while watching the film. Also I did see an interview where they expressed that they wanted this Batman character wrestling with how to be a hero and Bruce Wayne and that the lines would blur because he would be a recluse that wouldn't know how to switch off from being Vengeance - Batman whom he thought wasn't making a big difference . He honestly was struggling with how to be an effective Batman throughout the film and notice towards the end that he went from vengeance to being hope and a rescuer. Remember the flare shot? Him leading the people of Gotham to safety? Or carrying the girl to be air lifted? I believe that's where the transition starts. That's when he realized that he could be more. I'd expect more from this character in other installments. Great video btw..
