Just wanted to remark that this is #notacult
BM often used symbolism that came from the anime Evangelion, and there you can find the Death and Rebirth theme that inspired this. You have to remember that japan is not a Christian country (i believe less than 2% of the population is christian) so there was not an intention to be religious or even offensive :)
You are right about this song being perfect as an opener: this is exactly an intro song! They used to open with this son pretty often, and only few times they used it as a closing one. Also they didn't always use the crucifixation, as it was used just a few times as part of the lore, and few other times because it looked cool :D
The opening riff and the statue getting destroyed at the end are homages to Metallica, while the Neckbrace is an homage to X-Japan! :)

Babymetal DEATH is all about transformation and who doesn't enjoy a bit of theatrical autodafe?
The kamishibai (theater done with pictures) at the beginning tells us that Su has to give up her mortal existence and become a goddess to save us from Doomsday and the apocalypse - all the usual messianic stuff, but remember #notacult. This would be impossible in a monotheistic context because there is only one God, but most of the world is happy with multiple gods, Japan included, so it's easy enough for Babymetal to add one more. The DNA helix in the intro visuals to this song also appears on Su's stick mic in Headbanger and is another icon of life and transformation.
"Babymetal DEATH" is how BM usually says "hello" and introduces themselves. It's the first song on their first album and has often been used to start a concert. But here it is used as a big messianic, pun of a finale. To English speakers the song seems to be all about death, when in fact it is BM saying who they are and affirming their presence. The lyrics go "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". So once again we have the life and death counterpoint.
BM appropriate the symbolism of Easter to use as part of their own lore in Su's transformation and they also use Shinto images of the fox that is associated with Inari, so they are taking from many traditions - the Japanese are pretty undogmatic when it comes to gods, but some people from Christian cultures will find this shocking.
This concert, Legend 1997, is also is a transformation of BM from an idol group to a metal band as they start with a lip synced, dubstep version of Headbanger and end with this live version of Babymetal DEATH backed by the Kami band.

    *BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*.
    Song: BABYMETAL DEATH.
The monologue at the start is in Japanese.
So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue).
    "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…
BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*.
Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and geting them up on there feet bouncing and geting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin.
But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not geting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year".
So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess.
"All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*.
Bye the way #NotaCult, most definitely #NotaCult and anyone claiming different will be dragged in front of your Goddess and thrown into the pit of frogs or if you catch her on a bad day she will just burn you. 🤘🦊💀🦊🤘

this was for Su's 16th birthday. she turned 16 the day before this show. the context of this show started out with a dubstepped version of Headbanger and ended with this song. the show progressed with her getting away from the pop style Queen to metal Goddess at the end. it usually for a while was the opening song but here it was the last show of the night. she had to die and come back as the Goddess she is. the statue is not of Mary but if you look at the face it is suppose to have the likeness of Su. Metal all the way.

the show "Legend 1997" is named in honor of Su's birth year, 1997. She turned 16 the day before this show. from other reactions, the title Babymetal Death is a play on words. When you introduce yourself you would say Su-Metal Desu (I am Su-Metal I believe the U is silent) so it sounds like they are saying death. The story behind the song is in order to become the "Metal Goddess" you must sactifice your human form. I'm sure others will be here soon to correct me or add to the story

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀
The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up.
    Usually without a crucifixion. : )
This performance was very unusual since it was used as the closing number.
The song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese.
In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are". It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it.
So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL".
    The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" one letter at a time.
There's a bit more context in the introductory narration:
    Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time

I'm a bit jealous of those who got to follow their growth (as a group) in real time, but better late than never. I have soaked up every bit of history there is, including Sakura Gakuin and *all* the rest, and I'm ready to see them next year!
I should add that when the girls point at each other and at the crowd, it probably symbolizes that we are all BABYMETAL, since the song is basically titled "We are BABYMETAL" (BABYMETAL Desu).

There's a lot of symbolism going on here, all about where the band was at that time and where they were going. Other commenters will fill you in on most of it, I'm going to focus on this being BABYMETAL's transformation song.
The band has a delightfuly silly mythology about the girls and the KAMI being selected by the Fox God to spread heavy metal around the world. When the band members take the stage, they stop being Suzuka, Yui and Moa. They are possessed by the heavy metal spirits and become SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL. This song was usually played at the beginning of their concerts and it's the moment when they transform. SUMETAL DESU! is like saying 'I AM SU-METAL!', which is like the anime trope when a character transforms into a super-hero, like Sailormoon's 'Moon Prism Power....MAKE UP!'
In interviews, the band often referred to this as a real thing, like they would play-act at it being real, and they would let themselves believe they were becoming someone else. I remember seeing someone talking about watching them rehearsing for their collab with Rob Halford and they said 'but they weren't really BABYMETAL yet'.
I think it might have been one of the reasons that they were able to be so fearless on stage when they were younger, they had alter egos that were braver than they were.
