    Notice how different this sounds to the official soundtrack release. Especially when Evan enters the gymnasium, you can hear the echos coming from Ben’s voice. So I kind of like to think Ben did all of the Singing on Camera and then later recorded version for the Soundtrack.

      In The Greatest Showman, the movie versions of the songs sound different to the soundtrack versions as well. So I was hoping they'd do it here considering it has the same songwriters as The Greatest Showman
      But I can hear that it is most likely Ben actually singing rather than lip synching

    I saw a photo online that during this number, Connor waves at him, but Evan is looking in the wrong direction and Connor storms off in frustration. In You Will Be Found, Evan says, “if you only look around.” Maybe if he had looked around, they may have actually been friends.

      Just because he’s been on Broadway doesn’t mean he’s not going to get autotuned. You can absolutely hear it in his voice here. Amazing singers get autotuned all the time, even if they don’t need it or it’s against their wishes, since a lot of the time they won’t have the final say on these decisions.

      @SilverLily Před 2 lety +19

      This is just a small clip, so I'm not going to make final judgement on it yet, but I think they did a good job on showing his anxiety through body language in a normal crowd setting. For instance, near the end of the clip he's very caved in on himself, keeping his arms in close to his body and out of the way of accidentally hitting passersby. I recognize that posture because it's the same one I pull in any kind of crowded situation. Again, tho, that's just a minute and fourteen second clip out of a movie that's at least an hour and a half or more, so I could be very very wrong.

      @SilverLily Před 2 lety +6

      @@MattEvuns that's fair. And, tbh, I'm not sure how they would've adapted some elements from the play over to an actual movie. I don't think the feeling of You Will Be Found, with it's comment section part is going to carry over and make sense. Honestly, I would've much preferred a proshot of the Broadway version, because sometimes you just *can't* copy things from the stage to big screen because it won't make sense. While I'm excited for it, I'm worried it's going to look like a campy teen flick or like a Netflix version, lol.

      Sorry to come into this late, but I honestly feel like everybody walking around him and not noticing him is actually very fitting. This happened in both the musical and movie version. This song is literally about him being invisible and while he is singing it, he is literally invisible. Nobody is noticing him, nothing. They're just walking past as normal. It all fits the song. I also like to believe that he isn't truly singing while the scene in the background plays out. It is an internal dialogue being performed solely for the audience to see. It isn't actually happening, which is why nobody is reacting.

Some songs had to be cut in order to focus on the main arc and shorten the musical down. He has social anxiety and depression so in a way he is sick. When you are depressed and anxious and a loner you don’t really worry about your appearance anymore or that your clothes are clean or if your hair is a mess because essentially you have given up on presenting yourself to others. These disorders can definitely take a toll on a person to the point where they don’t look recognizable if left unchecked. The sad fact is that Evan has essentially no one and this is brought to the audiences attention early on. When he does end lying to the Murphy’s about his friendship with Connor he begins to believe it because he wishes he had friends or parents who paid attention to him, I mean Evan is still a bad guy, but he does try to redeem himself in the end. It’s such a heartbreaking story and I feel that Ben Platt portrays Evan as a socially awkward student pretty well considering.

    For those who don't understand the age issue:
    The problem is not that Ben is too old and the criticisms aren't that Ben is irreplaceable because his acting and voice are Evan. It is that he is older than he was when he originated the role. This breaks down into two parts:
    1. Medium - stage and screen are fundamentally different.
    Suspension of disbelief is higher on stage because audience and actors experience the same physics, so, the audience has to pretend with the actors. Actors represent characters and the two are inseparable.
    Screen is lower because the reality is limitless, so, the audience does not have to think a lot to belief what is happening. Actors are characters but they are not the same people.
    2. Time - time within a medium is different from time without. Within, time elapses but characters age only if relevant. Without, actors age in real time.
    The fallacy lies in one actor bridging the gap by crossing two thresholds of suspension of disbelief. Stage Ben originated, then stopped, then started back up after the intervening years to be Film Ben. Which is to say, Stage Evan was a teen who shared a body with Ben, who aged 6 years causing Evan to age, in which Evan then switched mediums to be Film Evan who exists independently of Ben.
    If that did not make sense,
    1. That is the dissonance people feel about Ben's age manifested into words, so, it is supposed to sound confused.
    2. Most questions regarding confusion are answered in the Medium and Time paragraphs if you read carefully.
    In other words, the age of the actor does not matter only if the actor does not reprise the role in a different medium years later, regardless of the original medium because the comparison is solely based around that one actor reprising the role.
    Regardless of age in the original medium, the comparison of the same actor will be a reminder, not that they are too old to play the roll, but that they are older than they were when they originated the role and that is what people mean when they say someone is too old.
    Why our brains have a problem with this concept likely has to do with our pattern recognition abilities, the one thing humans excel at, and our memories being at odds with our ability to believe in things not real.

    • @Lizzo13
      @Lizzo13 Před 3 lety +2

      Honestly, for me the problem isn't his age or any of this. It's that his hair and makeup in this are so bad that he actually looks older than even his real age. I really think his makeup in this looks awful. He shouldn't have lost weight for it either because the slightly chubby cheeks also made him (and almost anyone else!) look younger.

    This version is in a totally different setting. The students moving around were a huge distraction and destroyed the poignancy of the piece. This should have been shot closer to the intent of the stage version. It lost the ensemble feel of the stage version. Ben, as much as you want it, you're not getting an Oscar for this, bud. Sorry.
