Back in the 60's or early 70s there was a small restaurant chain named Frank. & Stein. It had lots of posters and statues for decoration to enjoy with your beer and hot dogs.

I've not seen either, but I do remember when "Unbound" was released on VHS. The box art was the creature's eye with the multi-colored, stitched iris and it always intrigued me.
It's a creepy look, that eye but effective.
The ever-influential Roger Corman just died on May 9, 2024 at the age of 98! He mentored and launched the careers of so many.

I read "Frankenstein Unbound" as a young lad and was quite taken by it. Never knew there was a movie version and certainly not a Roger Corman version. This is straight on the watchlist. Might even dig the book out again.

Sting is a really bad actor. Didn't like it.
I think "I, Frankenstein" is a decent movie. Speaking of Michael Hutchence, I read that he suffered a brain injury after being punched in a random attack which severely diminished his sense of smell. This affected his mental health and may have contributed to his death.
I heard that, too, which doesn't bode well for a lot of people who suffer from Long Covid. ☹
I, Frankenstein is interesting. Filmed here in Australia, too.
Honestly? One of my favorites is the last Hammer Frankenstein. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. I always enjoyed it, especially when I was able to.order it when I was 12 from a catalog that duped me a copy on vhs from a Japanese laser disc, the best way to see it uncut at the time.
Also, Frankenstein's Army was good. Hell.....I'd never thought I'd say this, but the two Jess Franco Frankenstein films were kinda ok

As I am certain I've may have motioned before... I am a lifelong fan of Roger Corman AND Brian Wilson Aldiss! So Unbound is one of my Go Tos! Story goes Mr. Aldiss wrote the virtually name only Sequel 'Dracula Unbound' in the hopes that Corman would adapt that into a Film & turn him into Hollywood's next Micheal Crichton!
Aldiss deserved more adaptations than he got. AI and Frankenstein Unbound were pretty much it.
I watched Kenneth Branagh"s Frankenstein a couple of days ago....De Niro was a the monster.......his monster had a high set of morals which was interesting.....
the monster was better than the creator story....

@@terrytalksmovies Frankenstein was a relatively lengthy novel created to deliver a relatively simple moral.
"a cross between Tim Burton (when he was good) with John Waters"---well you sold me with that line alone for "Lisa Frankenstein"! good to know it's also written by Diablo Cody...the writer of the great "Jennifer's Body". Carla Gugino always rocks her roles. a similarly unexpected film that surprised me with its sweetness was "Spontaneous" (2020) which has a concept of teenagers exploding ... literally! you may have already covered it, but if not, worth a look.
Carla Gugino is always fun. I have a blu-ray of Jennifer's Body but haven't seen it yet.
Frankenstein Unbound was a bit of hit or miss with me. I grew up watching Roger Corman films on late night TV, so count me in as a fan of his films. With a bigger budget maybe I was expecting more. Raul Julia is certainly the stand out.
More budget, a tweaked script and a better director would've made this one pop.
I like Lisa Frankenstein a lot, it has cult film all over it. Especially for the young generation of goths and horror hounds. Frankensteins Army is a modern favorite interpretation of mine

Re: Lisa Frankenstein, how has the 19th century guy not decayed into a skeleton by the time she digs him up? I think I've only seen Juno out of Cody's work. Frankenstein Unbound has been on my list to see for a long time but never got to it. Bridget Fonda really fell off the map and new photos show her being quite hefty but that's OK, leave her alone. I recall an 80s comedy called Creator with Peter O'Toole as a Dr. Frankenstein like character, ever seen that one?
It was set in Louisiana. Damp, moist soil. Also, the malfunctioning tanning bed did a lot of regeneration on him.

@@terrytalksmoviesyou know they never did reveal who the killer was in the movie because I thought it was Janet as I guess you seen those villains defeat videos because I have requesting Janet to be on as she is the closest thing to a villain as she beaten pretty early.
Funny you mention that because most gothic movies could be mistaken for a Tim Burton movie like the 90’s Addams Family and Jim Carry’s series of unfortunate events.

Frankenstein Unbound is a lot more fun to watch than that overly melodramatic Kenneth Branagh movie, that's for sure
Tonally they're really different but the Branagh one has moments of real gothic horror.

My issues with Roger's film are related mostly to pace and missed opportunities. Film, to me, lacks the kind of dramatic pauses----lingering quiet moments type things---that can create sense of gravitas to key moments. And overall a feeling of being rushed through the proceedings, which is odd considering Rc's quite masterly use of "moody pacing" in most of the Poe's. But this "rush-through" feel could be typical of some of his films (as well as an AIP characteristic/ a la their hacky DESADE. and WUTHERING HEIGHTS.). Roger was having fights with execs on the film about the editing, among other things,. He wasn't terribly happy with the final result because of studio compromises. Maybe this is where part of the problem (for me) stems from? Also felt too sunny at times. And i think he blew the first reveal of the monster (which is flat lit all too often, in my opinion....as if it mattered!) . Thought it hurt the make-up's effectiveness in that regard. I think too (I go on!) that the frozen wasteland stuff should have been kept darker/night time settings. This may've helped the atmosphere as well as make the indoor sets less obvious.
Anyway....I do generally like the film regardless , for being something different story-wise, and being, at times, pretty effective from an acting standpoint. . My criticisms may be uncommon since I tend to like much slower paced films in general.
Well, just some my own thoughts on this film. Maybe I had too high hopes for Rogere's return to directing when i first saw this in theater on its original release. With Roger, (with few exceptions) his films were often hurt by "it's good enough" thinking when "great" was needed.
(Btw, Roger had stepped in on occasion and directed parts of films he produced, as with BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS in which the ending was re-done by RC himself. Was fun to see him in charge of a set/in action)

You're right, the pacing is bad in F.U. The budget maybe or the shooting schedule were too tight.
Yeah, FRANKENSTEIN UNBOUND isn't one of Corman's better movies as a director-it felt like he didn't put the effort into it that he did into his films when he was directing regularly.
I haven't seen LISA FRANKENSTEIN, though sounds like I should look it up....
Lisa Frankenstein bodes well for Zelda Williams' future as a film maker. I look forward to her next project.
Frankenstein was not sci fi the monter is anamated by occult means read it carefully.
Frankenstein is the original science fiction novel, hence it's science fiction.

While Shelley never fully explains the process it is unlikely black magic, magic, or mysticism in anyway. In Chapter 3, Victor Frankenstein is an admirer of several alchemists. Alchemy in Shelley’s time, was more of a pseudo-science but certainly not thought in magical terms. Professor Kempe mocks Frankenstein’s admiration of alchemists but Professor Waldman reverently discredits them and convinces Victor to dedicate himself entirely to the scientific method.
Victor rejects Professor Waldman advice going on to study him and other occultists like Paracelsus and the like.
A student of 'natural science' who as a sideline experimenting with the occult no electric devices in the book the creature was reanimated by black magic read the book carefully this essay is proposing this concept. And it was by anonymous in the 1st edition in the 2nd Shelly gives her name as the author in the introduction outlines the electric experiments heresy and blasphemy were still criminal charges at those times.

I do not ever remember to have trembled at a tale of superstition or to have feared the apparition of a spirit.” but he rejected that to study Agrippa and Paracelsus.If you remember he was in a tomb when got "the spark of illumination" medical students just DO NOT dissect a body in the tomb they take it back to the 'lab' Shelly was indicating him practicing necromancy. Read the book carefully with a good history of the occult at your side.BTW at a time magic was thought of as a science ." I do not ever remember to have trembled at a tale of superstition or to have feared the apparition of a spirit.” most occultist are on the fearless side when it comes to things like that.
