- Carol Dutcher, homeless and recently swept from an encampment in Rio Linda talks about how she has no place to go and how a ticket only makes it harder for her to get housed because she has no way to even appear in court on June 28, 2024. Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to uphold the power of governments to impose civil punishment for camping outside.

Many years ago, worked at the VA Hospital in LA where I saw a bunch of homeless and disabled Veterans living in squalor bordering the VA. The government literally does nothing to help them.
I also recall, attending UCLA Extension where I saw a bunch of homeless people nearby. I noticed all the homeless were elderly!

The places that these people are homeless they are never going to be able to make it regular people can hardly make it so show them a State or city that they have a real chance to make it in… Beverly Hills and our Beautiful Beach areas aren’t it!
So annoying…I was at Santa Monica beach with my husband being stared down by a homeless woman. And I was there from out of town, hadn’t been to the beach in years because I moved far away from Los Angeles. I decided not to go to Santa Monica Beach anymore.

This is truly appalling...I saw the beginnings of this back in 1986.
I went up to Vacaville, California for work and I went to pull off to rest area and it was full it was like all these folks are tired too? I was sitting for awhile no one was moving outside there vehicles and I realized that many people where just sitting there...I left to continue my journey...to the east bay area.... that was around the time the navy base was closing - Alameda-. These folks looked to be all ages...and they where not people of color..I gasped and thought...now they do not even care about their own...but in actuality they never did. America land of the free? Home of the brave? Brave for what?
There's a small amount of time to do the correct thing....but I guess its hard to care about other people when you are knee deep in the throws of a large platter of greed....the sauce is just too savory...the vices one has are being felt more terrific. The thing is 1% .....of wealth...I know you would say oh I won this fare and square..... but damn you know people are in dire straits and the best you can do is nothing?
What about that idea you may have come too...that put you in the 1%...you can't come up with a glorious achievement that would facilitate others out of the stagnant stench they are in..... ? My even the Lords did better by their subjects to see them in housed conditions of dignity and allowed them privacy to do personal things for themselves. I feel sorry for her, but she is not typical of the homeless I see everyday... like the guy in military fatigues who decided to park himself on my neighbor's porch the other morning and was out of his mind on drugs. The cops did nothing because he left before they would even respond. Sick of the antisocial behavior and crime

Powerful. God help a society that has no compassion for those less fortunate than themselves, for God will have NO COMPASSION on them. What arrogance to deny a poverty stricken person the dignity of a comfortable spot on the ground where they still have to keep looking over their shoulder hoping to defend themselves against the next strong armed robbery, where they are feasted upon by the insects and parasites common to dogs and cats and living under conditions a hundred years in the past. These are still human beings. Imagine if they were your sons, your daughters, your mothers, your aunts; because if you have no compassion God will make sure to bring your callous arrogance back upon your own or your loved ones head.

This is heartbreaking. There are many unhoused that decline shelter because of the rules they need to adhere to. Then there are others that truly want to get back into the workforce and take care of themselves.

Too many people say the ruling made homelessness illegal, that is a lie. They merely ruled that cities can enforce outdoor camping rules to the homeless. Welcome to the club the rest of us have to cope with.

They shouldn't be getting tickets for just "camping". The real issue is the criminality in the lifestyle. Dealing and doing illegal drugs, dealing in stolen property, prostitution. Those are the real issues and that is what should be enforced.
If your real issue is that you don't have a place to live there are a myriad of resources to support you. You just have to accept it. If you are refusing the resources that are offered you because you want to continue a criminal lifestyle then there will be consequences.

This is almost hilarious. If I was homeless, il take free room and board, 3 free meals., all my medical paid for and heat and air for free in jail. Thank you. Il also be requesting my eyeglasses and dental the second I get taken to jail.

I frequently see churches that have outreaches giving out boxes and pallets of food, clothing(used AND new), hygiene kits and cooked/hot meals. A consensus that I have heard from the homeless themselves, is the homeless population got the stimulus checks, most get disability and most get their ssi checks, monthly. In the San Joaquin area, soooo many people and businesses pass out food, clothing other items to the point the homeless people turn down these things and say they just want money, they tell people they GOT food, just wanted money. Many homeless people say they CHOOSE to be homeless because they can live by THEIR OWN RULES, and know they don't have to abide by government rules 😠 Most of the homeless are on heavy drugs and commit a LOT of crimes and robbery in California.
There are SOOOO many programs in California that is geared to helping the homeless people find housing, sober livings, mental health assistance, job assistance (apprenticeships, state/county work, free job trainings for MS Office/Excel Spreadsheets, etc), free work clothes for office, scrubs, etc etc, WIC, EBT, Women n Children Shelters.....wayyy too many to list. My point is this, for those who are TRULY and HONESTLY looking for help to get out of homelessness, help is available all they need to do is ask! Btw, for this woman, there is also the Dept of Aging who helps our elderly population, homeless or not, with ALL sorts of resources.
Again, help is there if they want it.
