  • Rachel Nichols sits down with Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge to talk about Kyrie Irving's exit, his struggles building the roster in 2018-19 and having too many players on a similar level (Kyrie, Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, Terry Rozier), attracting Kemba Walker in 2019 NBA free agency, being absent big men with the departures of Horford and Aron Baynes, his knack for making impressive trades, Hayward's broken hand injury, his own health, and Walker's impact on the team (the interview was recorded prior to Walker's neck injury).

    • @thehumburger
      @thehumburger Před 4 lety +2

      He's completely wrong here (well, not wrong but lying ), the roster was constructed well as evidenced by nearly everyone picking them to win 60+ and the East, it was up to the coach and players to make it work. But he's doing at least 2 things - taking whatever blame he can off his coach who it's more impt to have a good working relationship w/ players, and showing players they'll support them no matter what, even after they're delusional conceited a-holes who are most responsible for the team underachieving. That's both a solid GM and one who can take the long-term approach b/c he's sure of his job security.

  • @stardestroyer44

    • @tnyamaneko6093
      @tnyamaneko6093 Před 4 lety +1

      You're absolutely right, and this is why he's one of the very best GMs of the whole league.
      At this point, when looking to what happens to the Nets for the season and the good vibes around the Celtics, it appears pretty clearly that Kyrie has a very significant responsibility for what went wrong last year. Today's Nets look like last year Celtics in the way that there's no consistency and instead of licking their wounds and patiently wait for adversity to abate, BAM, something stupid appears in the media.
      Ainge would not be seriously blamed for being a savage towards Kyrie for that, but he refrains himself doing so because there's also nothing to win for that. He comes out as a respectable man by taking the blame, and a big winner PR wise.

      @City Beautiful Attractions They were able to get Kemba because they did a sign and trade. It was Rozier for Kemba and a future second round pick. You read that right, Kemba plus a future pick for Rozier. They didn't have the cap space to outright sign Kemba for the max and Charlotte would've had to compete with the other teams for Rozier in free agency and Boston likely would've matched any offer if they didn't trade for Kemba. It worked out for both teams. Kemba would be playing in NY or Dallas and Rozier would still be in Boston if it weren't for the sign and trade.

      Pippen even mentioned that nobody respected Kyrie enough, they were challenging him, and not accepting or happy with their role like the Lakers are doing right now. He hadn't earned that in the league, especially from a team who went to game 7 with LeBron without him. Adding Hayward into the starting lineup early didn't mix well with the players who felt they should start.

It was a bad decision that ended up playing a part in ruining their season and interrupting Tatum and Brown’s growth. He should’ve been lower on the priority list than those guys. He should’ve been brought along slowly. And it’s not like he was a perennial AllStar in the West. Let’s not act like he was dominant out there. He’s a guy who can make the AllStar team if someone else gets hurt or if the coaches like him. He made it once. Tatum has perennial AllStar talent and Brown is close to that.

    You know what, your team as of now dominating. It so happen that you just won games. But it's not yet, you know,? Take a look at the other team who becomes a champ, they dominate in some other terms. The uniqueness of play which even you could not explain. The ONE that direct a team. I know you know Danny what I mean. There are some needs that you need to sacrifice. The Chicago Bulls get rid of others for the good of the team like Phil Jackson and GSW replacing Mark for Steve. There is a need to sacrifice even on players or coach. The plays of Stevens could easily read. A simple adjustment for other teams to do. Boston is one of the top and tough team, that why they are always on the radar of other teams. Always studied just like the player involves . As what I always say your not a dominant team after they know what's your plays. There's always a plan ahead of schedule.
