  • The Winter Dance Wall has captivated generations of climbers and explorers in Montana. Up high on the prow, a prominent chunk of ice hangs to wet the appetite of any person with ice tools. Legend has it, Patrick Callis was one of the first noted to lay eyes on it while exploring the canyon on skis back in the 1970’s. The first initial "Winter Dance" climbing route was established years later in 1997 by Alex Lowe, then Free Climbed by Whit Magro and Kristoffer Erickson in 2007. In 2014 Conrad Anker and Kristoffer Erickson bolted a nearby variation and completed the FA naming it "The Nutcracker". Since then, the two routes have guarded over the canyon with no intention of being climbed without a rope. In 2019, Matt Cornell tempted that fate, completing his solo entirely alone on the Nutcracker variation. Our new film, "The Nutcracker", highlights the forefathers of this legendary wall as well as the process and dedication it takes to accomplish such a goal of climbing it, without a rope. Enjoy this visual spectacle of climbing in one of the most spectacular climbing arenas in Montana, The Traditional Lands of The Shoshone-Bannock, Apsaalooké, Salish Kootenai & Cheyenne.

Is it just me or does the totally decontextualized drumming before a bunch of white guys talk about climbing with not one but two perfunctory land acknowledgements seem really tokenizing and weird. Maybe I missed the part where it makes any sense but.. it's 2022.. you can do better.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for taking the time to check out the film and invest some thought into it.
To give you some background, after speaking with Micheal and after he watched an early edit, he was inspired to write an original song for the film and preform on camera. From my perspective, if Micheal was comfortable collaborating with us, I fall to the side that we are appropriately paying homage to traditional lands and people. Our take away from the experience is that this acknowledgment was important to Michael, not a tokenization.
If you would like to speak with him directly to make sure he doesn't feel tokenized, please let me know and I can put you in touch.
      Nathan
