Why Your Fuel Pressure Gauge Reads WRONG: Live Feed Replay

  • Live feed re run! This was originally aired as an afternoon live feed Doug did to drop some helpful education around fuel pressure gauges. Enjoy!
If you have ever used one of these small fuel pressure gauges you know they are accurate to within about 15psi... we all use them simply as reference of whether the car has fuel pressure or not, but why can’t they be better.
These small 1/8” NPT gauges like the one in this video are oil (liquid) filled to stand up to vibration.
If you’re like me this is frustrating. In the event you feel you’re getting false transducer reading to your efi system, or worse you just don’t know which one to trust, there is something definitely unsettling about trusting a cheap small gauge.
You see, as we found out, the oil actually heats up and causes pressure internally which makes for false readings.
Aeromotive released this gauge in this live feed mashup to solve all that. It has a small pressure relief whether a typical gauge has a fill cap. This means whether it’s ambient temperature or boiling hot, you can press the relief button, it drops the internal pressure and gives you an accurate reading. These gauges are only a few bucks more than a non pressure relief style and definitely make life nice!

I never used oil filled gauges in the engine room or on the engine when I was in the Navy. Oil filled gauges were used in the control room which is usually air conditioned so that we had a much better control on the pressure of an oil filled gauge.

Great info. I didn’t even think about the gauge not reading accurately.

The man , Brock , hooked me up with an entire new fuel system with aeromotive and fragola! I got the pressure sensor along with the mechanical gauge!

If the brass fitting is accidentally pulled out, how do you reset it as it’s fallen below zero? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a question I’m chasing to see if it is possible to have this regulator( smaller one) be stuck at 20psi I try to adjust pressure and it stays there

Never use the liquid filled gauges but I mostly do carb cars and use a removable gauge to set/check efi

Do they make a low pressure version for use on carburetor vehicles

I just got a JEGS regulator and gauge for a mechanical pump and carburetor, what is your honest (honest) opinion of the product??

Aeromotive techs say to pull the gauge valve up and let it relieve the pressure then push it back down.

Well some of the units have just a rubber nipple on the top and it physically says with a white sticker on the gauge that says cut?
I've never seen a gauge with a button on yours there's other models out there with rubber nipples and it clearly states to cut a vent hole on the rubber nipple

Pretty sure you pop the brass valve up and leave it there. That's what the sticker on the side of mine says.

Just don't use a liquid filled gauge. The liquid filling doesn't give any longevity to the fuel pressure gauge, it's just thete to steady yhe needle. Fuel Lab and others sell gauges that aren't liquid filled and don't need dohickies.
