Unironically the FNaF 1 jumpscares were really good. Not the when you die ones, the jumpscare of an animatronic in your hallway. The noise that comes along with it with the knowledge you have a limited amount of time to react, and on a first playthrough not knowing how long they'll be there. It made you dying if you didn't react appropriately scarier because you saw it coming, and if you did close the door for how long? Would you open it just to see it still there? How much more are you checking the doors now? Did you even open it at all? If not the no power leads to Freddy's jumpscare. It's tense and until you've played the game a lot both cases leave you feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable. The first time you clicked close door and it didn't close, you just sit there waiting for the inevitable, confused and scared. I really wish future FNaF games continued to use jumspcares to release tension not try to create it.
Great opinion man
the useless staffbot jumpscares in Security Breach ruined the entire concept of jumpscares for me
I mean, you could write a lot about this game, but jumpscares that don't kill you? just for a quick rush of adrenaline? what was the point? you become desensitized and it turns to a regular game that startles you sometimes
Yea, the uncertainty and semi-randomness definitely helps.
3:30 the fear in this scenario would actually be the thought that it was too easy. In a horror game, you almost always expect the monster/killer/antagonist to overpower your character, so when you find yourself in a situation where you can just beat the crap out of the thing that you should be terrified of gets you thinking, "That was way too easy. That can't be it. There must be something stronger." You said it yourself, it's all bout anticipation, and by throwing something that should under any other circumstance be scary; but in this case isn't lets your mind wander.
Yeah thats facts man
that's why one of my favorite horror games is Subnautica
because it's literally not intended to be a horror game, but it represents and unknown ocean so well that it triggers your fight or flight sense and you're always alert
and when you finally get a chance to breathe and tou think you're chill, a leviathan roars in the distance
but I mean it, Subnautica is one of my favorite games ever, trully good memories I gained from it (and thalassophobia as a bonus)
Absolutely man i couldnt agree more, i think thats one of the reasons subnautica is so popular (other than it just being a great game in general) is the viral clips of people going out of bounds and getting jumpscared by leviathans
I actually adore those games that aren't extremely scary for the sake of it.
But instead are scary unintencionally.
Yeah subnautica is a horror game that’s not a horror game lol
Yeah HOW did they not list it as a horror game
@@CallytheCalicoCat it's more of a phobia level terror than an actually horror game.

A fellow man of culture 😈
Early Minecraft was peak in its uncanniness/horror, especially the time when your world was foggy due to low render distance and torches barely lit the area.
It was really just herobrine 😂
A still image appearing out of no where and just staying still is more scary than a loud rapidly appearing... thing, that goes away 2 seconds later.
Bro understands 🙏
That's actually what made Scott Cawthon scared of Bonnie. He was testing the game and Bonnie caught him, and this was before he animated the jumpscares. So all he saw was Bonnie staring at him.
oo that reminds me of a concept i had with a fnaf semifangame concept where the characters can sprint in the hallways if flashed and when the flashlight is turned back on theyre just staring
honestly what makes lethal company scary for me is when the place is dark and it's already late so enemies like brackens, coilheads thumpers or basically anything could be lurking aroudn the corner and make me loose my run, what makes scary games scary for me is the fear of loosing progress and not knowing if you're gonna loose it or not, i don't care if i'm in a dark scary place with a monster trying to eat me if i will have 0 punishment for dying, in lethal company if you die you get punished heavily
Thats why in the beginning i talked about having 8 diamonds with only a heart left... its a whole different category of fear 😂 like trying to make it back to the bonfire before you get clapped in ds3
The Silas jumpscare from fears to fathom ironbark lookout has to do this the best for me, the way the game builds tension worked exactly like you explained it

two types of fear u mentioned (there ARE MORE)

Poppy Playtime chapter 3 was by far the scariest game I have ever played. Nice points, and I agree with all! I will add on that unexpected jumpscares by themselves are not necessarily bad and can still be really good when used scarcely. The problem is some horror games rely exclusively on this. One moment in gaming that stays in my memories of an unexpected jumpscare really got me wasn't even in a horror game. It was in "Batman: Arkham Knight" with Man-Bat. See, throughout that whole game, you're zipping to rooftops and gliding seamlessly as THE Batman, and you always feel safe at those times. But then, at any random point, when grappling to a roof, the camera immediately zooms in as Man-Bat takes center frame and screeches down at Batman, at the player. That was so unexpected that I jumped in my seat. Good times. Great video!

I agree I think most modern horror content in the form of film, games, books etc. is mostly utter trash because there's no true 'fear' in it, just allot of gore, blood spilling and jump scares. The art of atmospheric horror, building up to something frightening, delivering on expectations etc. seems to have largely gone out the window and it's always been one of my BIGGEST issues with modern horror. Poppy Playtime is EXTREMELY atmospheric, with the odd jump scare to keep you on your toes and enough puzzles to give you a false sense of calm so that when the next scary part hits it's completely unexpected. They've done extremely well and deserve a ton of praise. It's the only modern horror ANYTHING that I've willingly consumed, everything else I enjoy in the horror genre is from the very old HP Lovecraft books etc.
Hell yes bro i agree

When I played Quake 1 on Windows 98, I hadn't hit puberty yet, the provided music was done by Nine Inch Nails. The music made gameplay scary. Without the music I was focused on fighting enemies. The fear kicked in when alone in dark spaces.

Your editing is good, your voice can be heard well (although I didn't hear everything well because I'm not a native English), the way you present your videos is also good, everything is good. Slendytubbies 2 also does this very well in my opinion
Even though there are no jumpscares the map and the character models and screams are already incredibly scary
For example the noises laalaa makes are incredibly unsettling and can already make you scared even without seeing her
ST2 is scary until you accidentally break the bots

One scare that really stuck with me is one that will probably raise a few eyebrows, but it was the Titanic breaking in half in Julian Fellowes' 2012 Titanic mini-series.
Let me explain...
It's very much unlike how James Cameron's 1997 movie portrays the breakup; making it very obvious what's about to happen by showing multiple different angles of the decks breaking, rooms tearing apart, and people falling into the gap - not to mention the musical cue. There's a very distinct build-up and the ship is clearly-visible the whole time. It's just a spectacle in a Hollywood movie.
Meanwhile, in Fellowes' mini-series, there's only one camera angle at water level looking up at the Titanic's silhouette looming up not far away (as if you are a person in the water right there in the scene) with portholes ablaze as a man climbs aboard an overturned collapsible boat in the foreground. Your eyes are probably drawn to the man scrambling along the keel of the boat as the camera pans to keep up with him and a roaring sound steadily builds in the background. Then, as that roar reaches its crescendo, your eyes are drawn to the ship's outline by the lights flickering and subtle bending only a moment before the stern very suddenly crashes down into water. The sound design (aside from the Wilhelm scream) and the shot composition do this scene wonders. Even though you know the breakup is going to happen soon, the lack of music makes it impossible to tell exactly when, unless you're paying attention to that building roar. And notice how I only mentioned the outline of the Titanic; it's barely visible, but is just visible enough to see the hull hog slightly when your eyes snap back to it and then the breakup suddenly happens just like that. TLDR: I love it because it's not over-dramatic and makes the viewer feel as powerless as the people fighting for their lives.
I'd give that scene an award for scaring the life out of 8-year-old me and sticking with me to this day.
Dang man thanks for the thoughtful comment, and youre right - sound design is extremely important
bit weird you didn't mention alien isolation. it's easily the scariest game i've played, ever, and it relies entirely on atmosphere because by the time you get jumpscared you don't care about it. it's the constant pressure and tension that makes it as scary as it is. another thing is sound design, imo it's what matters the most when you want the player to feel uncomfortable (and alien shines there too)
Yeah alien isolation was in the original script when i was writing this video, but it just didnt fit in what i was trying to say
Subnautica is the exception it has this colorful bright area and you are terrified at every turn. It could be mid day and you are still clenched in every muscle.
I kind of agree, but you are underwater so even though its daytime, you're surrounded by an unending abyss
You look like Weird Al but older which doesn't make much sense because he's 64 and you aren't

My best horror game moment came from Bendy and the Ink Machine. And no, it wasn't scripted.
It's chapter 3.
I'm cutting down Bendy's cutouts in the toy factory. I come to a room lined with almost barren shelves and see a singular cutout among them. Knowing the Ink Demon is sensitive to sound, especially the sound of his precious cutouts being destroyed, I look around. I see no sign of the demon or his aura. I cut down the cutout. Right behind it, a shriek. There he is. I immediately book it. I run as fast as possible until I see it. The elevator shaft with a hiding place. I'm home free, right?
Wrong.
I slam face first into the doorway and that microsecond of struggle was enough for him to catch me.
😂 its the same way with poppy playtime in the vents hahaha i feel your pain
Oh brother, being in a village, it's day time, you're safe, there's no enemies nearby, and you spot a cave, you decide to grab some food, torches, and a pickaxe, you go in the cave, and then it hits, a cave sound, that thing makes you feel like there's something else in the cave, something behind you, you suddenly feel unsafe, and you instantly turn around and rush out, scared for your minecraft world cause you think herobrine might corrupt your world, the good ol days when you were just a kid.

I think another game that does this well is scp containment breach, the since even when your not in direct danger, a lot of the time, you do not even know how much danger your really in, for all you know, scp-173 could be right behind the door your about to open and doors clearly do not work on preventing it, and then we got scp-106, he can just appear out of nowhere and pull you into a literal torture dimension, even with no scps around you, the eerie ambience never fails to keep you on edge

What does it for me in horror games is the feeling of 'get away Get Away GET AWAY' when a monster is too close/hot on your tail, sadly it only works once but that's just me I guess, and the noise of Huggy stomping after you in a narrow space sets my anxiety to 11 (In the good way that only horror does, Pug-a-pillar's bug steps as well, I HATE IT XDD)
I'm kinda sad abt the undeveloped potential of chapter 3, Catnap was hyped up as this horrifying, religiously obsessed being and the times he was allowed to shine were too far and few in between, I LOVE psychological horror, is my favorite genre and seeing the concept of a religious lunatic (While still being A CHILD) that runs rampant in a place you can't escape AND THERE'S SOMETHING WORSE THAN HIM waiting for you really sells it for me, Chapter 3 did good but COULD have done much more BETTER, I think a year or two more in development would have had helped the game significantely...
