My absolute favourite set of books, did you know Game of thrones would not exist without these books! Well worth the read! Can't wait for the next one x
Just started The Dragonbone Chair a week ago. So far one of the best books I've ever read.
I can't recommend this book and other books in the series enough! The audiobook was fantastic to listen to.
Picked up a copy of it today at my used book store. Looking forward to starting it
Remember reading and enjoying this quite a bit. I'll need to read it again as I've forgotten nearly everything. Was quite revolutionary for its time but I can see how much of it would be seen as common fantasy tropes today.
+Let's Read Yeah, I definitely need to go on with the next one soon actually, I definitely liked it despite the troupe-y-ness
I was intrigued by your review, so I went and read the first couple of chapters of the book. I wound up buying it because I am really enjoying it. You were SO RIGHT about Simon's not being the brightest bulb. Today I think he would be diagnosed with ADHD since he can't seem to remember from one moment to the next what he is supposed to be doing.
I'll pick this one up definitely!
That's one of the reasons I love The Belgariad. It's a classic, but the books aren't very long, and instead of spending loads of time on the establishment of the entire world, we learn about them as we get to them. That way you, and the main character are experiencing everything at the same time, and it doesn't necessarily slow the story down. Also Eddings gives a prologue in each book, which gives you info and a broader picture of things you'll need to know. I will be trying this series for sure, though, because I've been eyeing it for years.
+Tinahgirl83 I think slower starts and series can be really good and this one has a lot of potential. I definitely want to continue it on.
+Kitty G I actually saw the whole series on clearance at my local used bookstore, so I'm thinking to pick it up and read it once I finish the Wheel of Time series.
Excellent review 😃 I like how you structure all the topics.
+German Enrique Gavarrete Velasquez Thank you!
+Kitty G your welcome 😃
Loved this book! I read this on my E-Reader and fell in love with Simon, Josua, Binabik, Jiriki, Miriamele and the heroes of this story. I have yet to try Stone of Farewell but I'm sure it will be a 5 star book because of how much I liked the first book! I gave it a 4.5/5
Fingers crossed you like that too!
I haven't read this for a very long time, one of the first books I read when I was a kid! What do you think of Malazan Book Of The Fallen??
I really enjoyed this series though it took me about 250 pages to get into the first book and I felt that to green angel tower was a whole lot longer than it needed to be.
Green angel part 2 released in 2016 does it add more to the story or is it just a rerelease?
Great time to be reading this series as Tad Williams is writing "prequel" series in this world at the moment. I remember this series getting better as you progressed.
+Jo Reads I'm very excited to learn that! I'll definitely be looking out for that one :-)
Jo Reads It's not a prequel series...it's set thirty years after the conclusion of To Green Angel Tower. The recent novella, The Heart Of What Was Lost, takes place right after the events of the last book and prepares the reader for the next adventure in Osten Ard.
Michael Smith thanks i realised my mistake a while ago. Cheers
My favourite trilogy of all time. Although Robin Hobb is edging this out with her Fitz books...
Ahh Hobb is good. Tad is definitely good too though
the dragonbone chair
Robin Hobb's 'Liveship Traders' is my favorite trilogy of all time. I think that's better than any of her fitz books. (which are still great of course)
Great review! Can't wait to hear what you think of Williams' new books that take place in Osten Ard.
+Mr. Verloc I loved it and have already reviewed it on my channel
LOL. Guess I better lurk awhile! I'm reading this book right now. Does it start out a bit slow? Does it suffer from "first in a series" problems? Maybe. I personally loved getting lost in Hayholt. I loved the idea of a castle so impossibly big and old that there's no way Simon could solve all of its mysteries.
Another great review, thanks.
+farnumbp :) Glad you enjoyed it
I do agree witg the consensus that the second and third books are alot better.but I will say I do not agree with the popular opinion that the first book starts slow. It seems most people that say that are younger people. I think lack of action doesn't mean its slow. the first. few chapters were great, but not action packed. but many new books start off with lots of action so people are getting used to that. anyway great review as always. also who dose the music for the intro and outright? its catchy.now its stuck in my head.
omg interesting you reviewed this. it's pretty old. I just started listening to it but switched to The Waking Fire which I'm really enjoying. Also started Eye of The World audiobook. I agree that the reason I switched to Anthony Ryan was because the other 2 books had boring starts. I'm not a huge fan of a young boy from an idyllic village being taken from his everyday life and thrust into the role of Chosen One you know? But I feel I HAVE to listen to WoT. And I loved Shadowmarch and Otherland (of which there's a recently released video game I'm going to play).
+Matthew Bryan Otherland was fab. I've not tried Shadowmarch out yet (but i do intend to). I'm hoping to pick up The Waking Fire next month as it sounds super.
+Matthew Bryan I thought Shadowmarch was a huge disappointment compared to Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. It seemed to rushed and amateurish compared to his first fantasy trilogy. The more I looked it I guess I see why, though...it was never meant to be novels in the first place, but was supposed to be a movie and then a fantasy series. When he changed it to a trilogy he obviously had to write much more and it just didn't work for me at all. It didn't help that I thought nearly every character was either avoid of personality or completely unlikable. You can have have unlikable characters...but they actually have to be interesting. That series had so few interesting characters.
As I'm too lazy to write, I'll voxer you about the book.^^
+Bitten by a radioactive book ;)
just picked this up for 2 bucks. gonna read after I finish elantris😄
Sounds very interesting! Thank you!👍👍👍📚🤖🚀
To me this series feels like King Arthur and The Lord of the Rings had a love child.
My advice is that you should definitely keep reading. There is some really fascinating writing. For example Simon had a dream about Pryrates brokering for power with a deity, and the deity said something like:
"You are a foolish creature. You see, you humans are like children. You see some pretty lights and need to have them."
Sounds way too derivative for my taste. There's likely better options within epic fantasy whether you want high magic (Malazan for example) or low magic (Song of Ice and Fire for example).
I've read both of those. I am trying to get some older titles back into my reading however and a lot of older fantasy is more Classic in tone. This isn't a terrible series, which is good, but it's certainly not for everyone :)
Joseph Fernandez lol a song of ice and fire was inspired heavily by this book trilogy...
Kinda surprised to read all of the praising comments here for this series. Once again my expectations don't align with the masses.
I'm half way through the third book atm. I'd have to sum the series up as "It may not be that great, but there's plenty of it!". This series is a long, slow walk with the rare interesting sight. Williams is in no hurry to make things happen, which is fine if you like a casual stroll through a thick tomb, but at times it feels like he added a lot of "hurry up and wait" to the story for some unknown reason. It is written well enough that the prose doesn't distract from the read (except for the cringey songs/poetry), but not well enough that either the story or the world really add much to the body of fantasy already in print. It becomes clear that he's taken tropes from the established fantasy genre and painted them in slightly different colors, but hasn't really created anything especially unique. It leaves me with the impression that Williams has taken LotR and tweeked some of the elements so as not to infringe on copyright, while appropriating cultural stereotypes from history as a framework for his own cultures because inventing new stuff is, you know, difficult. By now I've come to expect a large cast of characters, but this world seems almost empty aside from the small group at the center of things. Most of the sparse supporting cast are two dimensional so there's no remorse as they're quickly passed by.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad piece of work, it's just...meh. Could Williams have crammed all the missing excitement and creativity from the first 5/6 of the series into that last 1/6 I have yet to read, and I just havn't gotten to the good stuff yet? I have my doubts....
Books. All the best stories come from books. All the humans love stories. We can control them with books.
