  • Hello and welcome to Mart's Garage. I had to do a lot of internet searching to find diagrams and correct pin identifications for wiring a Volvo Overdrive Relay. These relays are not Volvo specific, they can be used in any Laycock Overdrive equipped car. I compiled all then info in this video in case it is helpful to anyone else contemplating the job or troubleshooting an existing system. I hope you find it interesting an hopefully useful. Thanks for joining me once again in Mart's Garage.

Fun and functional project Mart, I love stuff like this. It's not greasy or heavy.😁 I've just pulled my old engine and removed everything I'll need to move over to the new engine or back in stock. Just came in to have a bite of lunch and had a new Mart's Garage episode to watch during my lunch break. Thanks! 👍

Hello Art. Glad you like this sort of thing. I like wiring. It's nice and clean and quiet. Quite a contemplative activity. Plus stuff works afterwards. (Hopefully).

Interesting video. At first I didn't get the momentary switch, had to think about it. Got it finally. Nice set up.

Hi Mike. Yeah the momentary switch turns it on or off with each subsequent action.

Looks like a job well done...

Hi Mart, well done. It would be nice to have a little light ( maybe next to the momentary switch) to give you a visual indication of when the overdrive is on, I see the relay allows for that, cheers

Hi Steve. I might fit a light. Just not sure I need one at the moment. With the special relay you can't accidentally leave it engaged. Thanks for watching.

Mart how about mounting a micro switch on your gearshift lever that you could reach with your index finger, seems like it would be handy.

Hi Vette, yeah that's very do-able. Running the wiring up the stick can be a pain, though, so I went with the switch on the dash. I might change it but for the moment it is ok. Thanks for watching.

Hi Mart! could you run 12 volts direct to the solenoid, through a switch, and split gears?
i have a Mitchel overdrive in my Model A, it has a lever shifter and i split 2nd and 3rd. spiting
second id great for going up hills for me. but you car has a lot more power
    thanks for the vid! Brendan

Hi Brendan. 3rd OD would not be much different to 4th straight so not much benefit to be gained. The OD engagement can be a bit slow sometimes so using it briefly in 3rd probably wouldn't be worth the while. I have more torque than the Volvo motor so I wouldn't want to go over the design limits of the OD.

I'm guessing that the momentary switch on the dash only needs to energize the circuit, and the relay holds the overdrive engaged. Am I close?

Hi Gotham. Yeah, the momentary switch energises the relay which energises the solenoid. The relay latches and remains energised until: The momentary switch sends another signal, or the gearstick moves out of 4th, or the ignition is switched off.

@@MartsGarage So if I understand it correctly, you can go from OD to 4th gear by hitting the switch again?

    • @MartsGarage
      @MartsGarage  Před rokem

@@Danjr948 Yeah, Nuke, if OD is on, one touch of the momentary switch turns it off and you have straight 4th gear.
