How I Repair the Rust Damage on the Fenders and Tailgate of My Pickup Truck - #1

- My pickup truck, a 2007 Chevy Silverado, has rust on the fenders and tailgate. I repair the rust damage following these steps: grinding it off with a sanding disk and wire brush; rebuilding a hole with wire mesh; using a rust converter where appropriate; applying body filler/bondo; sanding the bondo smooth; and, applying primer, paint and clear coat.
Video 1: removing/grinding away the rust; applying the rust converter; rebuilding a hole with wire mesh, applying the first layer of bondo.
Video 2: completing the bondo process (fibreglass bondo, regular bondo, and bondo putty), sanding multiple times with 80 to 300 grit, and a final layer of wire mesh.
Video 3: taping off the areas for priming and painting, wet sanding, and buffing.

This is one killer video. I thought I done a good job on my truck until I watched this. Wish I'd have found this before. Once my crappy job falls apart, I'll return to this and follow it to the letter. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks for the kind words.
The wheel shattered because you were using a cutting disc as a grinding disc.
Correct, If you continue to use it in this matter? you will end up digging out shrapnel from your body. That disk is used to cut through metal like rusted bolts, nuts etc. It can also be used to cut sheet metal if you are careful. Only the thin edge should have pressure applied to it, We all know what happens when you push down on the wide side like a sanding disk Lol. Please be careful unless you enjoy trips to the hospital.
Yes wrong application totally for a zip cut
Great job, it s going to look good. I m bringing my old Ford over shortly. LOL
Thanks Don. Another fun project I was able to check off the 'to do' list.
Something fishy about CZcams.. had this video was made in the US it would have millions of views from all over the world but since it's Canada...😤 Well thank you Sir for your help, you've made it easy for me to start
I wish you were in charge at CZcams.
I have a 21 year old Chevy that I've only put 80k miles on. It has some rust spots I'd like to tackle. It has loads of life left in it but the rust spots look dreadful. I'm going to give it a shot and hopefully mine looks as good as yours when I'm done.
Sounds like there is a lot of life left in your Chevy. I watched several 'professional' rust repair CZcamsrs and followed their advice step by step. And, of course, I followed the instructions on the various products. Good luck Heather and thanks for the kind words. Peter at the Reboot.
Great video. I need to do some body work on my '98 chevy W/T. Thanks!!
Thanks. It's three years since I did this. I may need to give the fenders some more 'make-up' this summer.
A decent temporary job. You would manage a 100w Mig easily then cut out rust completely, replace with new metal.
Thanks. Would a flux core welder work for the job?
U know more then this guy😂😭like wtf I just watch
@@StonerKing-pg9cs Complete waste of time not doing it right! The rust will come through from inside in one year!
You good no judge yourself
Thanks.
The disc didn't explode. You exploded the disc. Good work though. 🍻
How’s it holding up?
Oh man, those 80s memories, my triumph spitfire! :) I stupidly didn't wear a mask back then (in my invincible days! Haha!)
You and me both!
What grit or type of sanding disc did you use to strip the rust
Hey Raymond, I first used a cutting disc ... a mistake. I changed over to a sanding/flap wheel. I'll have to look at the grit and get back to you. Peter at the reboot.
Would filling the hole with some gap filler be an option?
Good question. I'm not sure what the gap filler product is. What would you have used?
You flexed the disk bud
I know. And wrong disc for the job.
Start with one of those rust/paint remover wheels. The grinders borderline over kill, IMO.
You are correct. I learned the hard way.
I was remodeling bathrooms this summer, wile cutting some ductwork forgot my glasses got a tin burr stuck In my eyeball had to go the the hospital then the eye doc so they could dig it out w a needle. Not fun not cheep.
I hope you recovered.
@@TheWoodlandReboot yep after a few days it stopped hurting . I was a little surprised it seemed like at the DMV eye test it was a little blurry but never noticed before or sense.

Can we get an update video on this repair please?
I'll plan to include an update in an upcoming video.
Don’t see a follow up but did it last over the last two or 3 years???
The tailgate and one fender are holding up well. The other fender has some serious bubbling going on. It has worked well.
@@TheWoodlandReboot I had some that came back as bubbles. Hate rust. I'm going to cut it out today.
After something I saw years ago I wear a face shield, long sleeves, and I wrap my neck.
I'm going to start doing this as well.
So how's she holding up?
It is holding up well. I don't use the truck much in the winter months so it helps with paint job/repair last a little longer.
I'll be flying by the seat of my pants soon on my 09 Silverado with the same rust in the same spots
DIY special!!
You’re going to have to cut that rust out of there and put patch panels in to do it the Right way Bondo holds water it’ll just keep rusting. Got to get rid of the cancer.
I agree. It was a fix for two to three years. It is holding up well so far.
Still holding up?
Yes, it's doing well. Given I did not cut out the pitted metal, I have a feeling I'll get up to two years out of it.
Need you to come give me a hand on my 03 sierra
Ha! My hands are full on my end!
Id rather be doing a diy project
Isn't this a DIY project?
Projects
Indeed.
Diy cars
👍
Golf not my thing. DIY looks more fun, but beyond that I would rather be making graphic art or writing or studying music or something.
Hi Motherstar1, I had a plan to do some painting with my daughter at the pole barn. It did not work out before she had to start her university courses. Perhaps we'll get to the painting next summer. Thanks for the comment. Peter at the Reboot.
That grinder is way to abrasive causing more damage
Thanks Chuck. These are the tools I have and I don't want to buy others. It is what it is. Thanks for watching.
No it's not. JFC.
I hate to say it but what your doing makes your rust problems worse! And come back quicker! Welding metal in is the only way to fix it.....!
It is a simple, cheap fix on a $3000 pick-up meant to give it a couple years of looking better. Welding is a better option that I decided not to go with due to cost effectiveness.
There all bando on there😂wtf this not how you take care of rust that bad come on bruh
It’s holding strong 2.5 years later!
