Makes James Gordon looks like a real jerk.

They realised that having Barbara as Jim's loving girlfriend wasn't working so they had her be kidnapped, tortured by The Ogre and go psycho thinking it would improve her character. It didn't. She was basically Gotham's Lana Lang with them constantly changing her character and putting her in as many storylines as they could hoping to make her interesting but they never could.

@taltigolt I think the idea was that Barbara had always been "Unhinged" - It had simply never manifested... However, it was done very badly and failed to come across that way. I have had to rewatch that arc three times to decipher that much and even then it's more "Fan Speculation" than "Canon"

The solution to Ivy's powers of seduction is giving her the power of feigned innocence. She's not gonna get what she wants by removing your pants. She'll get what she wants by going to a police officer with a tear stained face asking for help finding her Mommy and then after telling him her address lead him someplace quiet to slit his throat. That's what the fanfic community does and it's truly terrifying when done correctly

It's so funny to assume men aren't fully attracted to teen girls, especially men who deserve to be murdered lol. It's also been shown that women are hit on the most in those years (around 13-15) so her powers of seduction would ironically be strongest. Like, lean into it without copping out & changing actor/character. There's a great supernatural ep where a teen girl is used as bait for a vampire house where she lures pedophiles to be drained. It's also used in Let The Right One In. It's probably used a lot in the vampire genre those are just two I know off cuff.

I think the "Isabella dying scene" could have been so much better because Penguin is constantly teetering on the knives edge between impulsive outbursts and long thought out schemes. It would have been so much better for him to think out a plan and then abandon it in a fit of rage. • @bronterey879
    @bronterey879 Před 5 lety +524

When the Kristen clone was sent in as Edwards perfect girlfriend, I was like, "oh this cheesy, but that's on brand" because I was SO convinced that Isabella was made by Hugo strange, and sent by Court of Owls, to access Edwards eligibility to join the Court of Owls. The court of Owls made a clone of Bruce Wayne, so we know that they can do that, and Riddler is an intelligent individual that they could profit from using. If the court made Edward emotionally attached Isabella, who is built to be his ideal girlfriend, then they could use that to manipulate him into doing what they wanted.
It explained why she looked like Kristen Kringle. It explained why she sticks with him even after learning that he was in Arkham for murder. Also, it explained why she said she had to leave to attend a "LIBRARIAN CONFERENCE" which I assumed was her cover for a Court of Owls de-briefing.
So you can imagine my frustration when the conclusion was "She was just a rando look-a-like."

She's constantly changing her character, personally, I would've had her death in Season 3 be the end for her character, her resurrection just felt one writer was like "No no wait, what if we tied her into Ras Al Ghul because that's cool!" No, it isn't, this just promotes the idea that we shouldn't have any kind of reaction when someone dies, even when they're original to the show. Barbara, Fish Mooney and Jerome were all technically original characters, all died, all came back to life. It's like in Kingsman The Golden Circle, if you want your characters to be alive for later stories, don't kill them! Wow, I really went on a tangent there!

The entire "Penguin loves Ed" idea was clearly made to be a tease with no planned pay-off. Ever. There are so many other ways they could've handled the writing and still ended up at the same place they did while also giving us interesting and new views on the characters.
Just have Ed fall in love with a girl. Penguin was Ed that the Riddler will kill her. Penguin serves Ed and his girlfriend enough booze for Ed to lose control, kill her and hide the body himself like he did with Kristen. Ed blames himself. Penguin confesses his love, Ed rejects but (over a few episodes) warms up to the idea as Penguin is someone the Riddler can never kill, aka, giving him someone to love forever. They fall in love. Some time goes by, Ed figured out what Penguin did, Ed and Riddler merges and takes revenge. Boom. Same end result, much better road to it.

There are so many alternative ways to do that, and the show just went for the least interesting one. It carried no meaning, and it's just stupid. Oswald killing Isabella should be one of the most important plot points of the season, because it's when their relationship breaks. It should be ironic, it should have used something that matters to Oswald, Ed, and the audience (just like what you said about Ed's past behavior). Your version would be much more interesting than what we have now.

    *Spoilers for season 5's ending*
One of my favourite relationships in Gotham is between Fish and Penguin. There's a big running theme throughout the show that Fish Moony essentially created The Penguin seeing as if she never took him on as her Umbrella Boy, Oswald would have never been sent down the road to become Penguin and this is cleverly finalised at the end of season five, during the Dollmaker episodes as you said Fish Moony gouges her left eye out and it gets replaced with a bright blue eye, later on in the final few episodes of season five Oswalds right eye gets blown up by a grenade. during the "ten years later" episode we see that Oswald had his right eye replace with a bright blue eye as well. Symbolising he and Moony are essentially two sides of the same coin and that he wouldn't have gotten where he was without her. It's one of those details I missed first time watching it and only really dawned on me a couple weeks after I finished season 5.

Given how much screentime Dent was given in the earlier seasons, I think it's highly likely they wanted to go that direction but for some reason decided against it. This make no sense to me, since Harvey Dent could have easily replaced any of the "big bad" villains and the show would be a good deal better. And I don't mean strictly substituting him in for a character, but rather rewriting the plot around his character arc. I think the best place for Harvey to become Two-face would be in Season 3 (I think?) when Penguin runs for mayor. How hard would it be to have Harvey Dent oppose Penguin in the election, causing Penguin to send his goons after Harvey, mutilating him and fueling his desire for vengeance. Plus, it would reference the Telltale games, which I really enjoy playing.

I think Cory Michael Smith who plays Ed Nygma is arguably the most believable portrayal of any character on the show, but also the most well acted generally. And there have been some absolutely phenomenal scenes with the character; namely the "it felt beautiful" scene, and the initial time that Nygma shot Cobblepot and threw him in the river. It feels like the actors are trying to save the show from its own bad writing and vision and it kinda blows.

I have an alternative explanation. I think there are different writers of the show, and they are in odds with one another. So whenever one of them makes an importan plot-change choice, the next guy just forgets about it, dismisses it or makes any kind of crap to eliminate it from the canon altogether (including characters' deaths). They are not respecting each other these script writers. And that's why Gotham has incredible, beautiful plotlines that follow their own inner logic, but the show (and even the arcs) are all over the place. Its overarching logic just doesn't work.

I've been watching the series for the first time and what I find most disappointing about the Isabella plot is that she actually did turn out to be nothing but a random doppleganger who only existed to become the Riddler's perfect girlfriend, and then die. I had assumed, given that the show was running another plot at the same time about a doctor who kills people to give their faces to criminal clients, that she was going to turn out to be a plant by someone who wanted to steal power away from Mayor Penguin by using his best friend against him. (I was thinking Court of Owls since we'd already seen that they can clone people.) Given Oswald's history with betrayal and losing loved ones, this could have cemented the Penguin and Riddler as a team and it would've made so much more sense than what we actually got. :(

Not gonna lie, I didn't know how many weather balloons it'd take to lift a person so I never really questioned it (too much Metal Gear maybe), but I can't really defend it having seen how many it'd actually take to lift a person But I still like the idea of these one-off cases that are pretty much just regular criminals with the exception of one gimmick. Start it off small before you get to the straight up murder clowns, plant powers, and freeze guns. And I liked him being a weird predecessor to Batman, a vigilante who goes after corrupt officials and uses a bit of theatricality to send a message. Gotham needs someone like the Balloonman, but the Balloonman himself isn't even close to competent enough to be what Batman ends up being. Maybe he would've worked better later on in the season, since the previous two episodes had just been a regular crime drama without any gimmicks.

But I honestly can’t even in good faith recommend this show to them, mostly because of a lot of the reasons you point out. I wouldn’t even subject myself to the show but I’m a sucker for Batman content and have a hard time starting a show and not seeing how it concludes. One of my biggest gripes with the show is also Barbara. I’m all for having strong female characters but his character in such constant change that it drives me nuts. I think the show runners love the actress so much that they wanna keep her in the show but her arc is all over the place. One of my nitpicks with the show was their handling of Harvey Dent. They introduced him as a young lawyer (I think?) way back in season one and then abandoned the character (I think the actor went on to other projects so maybe that had something to do with it). They really should’ve made the character a peer of Bruce so we could see their friendship grow, despite us knowing their eventual fates. Hell I would’ve even gave them a pass if they retconned his character, god knows they’ve done it before.

So the Balloon Man (BM to his pals) is a weirdo that prepares us for the idea that Gotham's residents can be a bit theatrical in their mental breakdowns. Like the fat guy in the vaguely Batman looking cowl from early on. Maybe Balloon Man was meant to inspire Kite Man. - And Harvey wanted Jim to let go because of the risk of shooting him in the balloon knot. - I loved the series, but I can see it's flaws. I'm just good at developing a head cannon that allows me to hang in. Like Firefly's suit material needed to be cured to reach it's final invulnerability. When that girl peed herself it was like adding carbon to hot iron to make steel. - Love your videos, your comedic timing and presentation are incredible.

Its for this reason that I despise this show's Ra's al Ghul because he feels very unnecessary and overcomplicates the secondary Joker arch for no reason.
