Equal percentage doesn't work without accurate context. If our team made $10 and the players got 50%, that would leave $5 to pay for all the teams expenses. Clearly, that would not be enough. But if the Team $10,000,000, then minus 50% would leave $5,000,000 for team expenses. That would be more than enough. Equal percentage only works when the amount of income is high. The same with taxes. would you rather have %25 of my income or %10 of Trump's income?

People don’t understand the concept of fixed costs. The teams have to pay for things like jerseys, arenas, etc and those costs would be the same for men and women. However since the NBA brings in more money, those fixed costs would take up a smaller percent of total league revenue and they can give their players a higher percentage. The WNBA makes less money so those costs would make up a higher percentage of their revenue, therefore they would have to give their players a lower percentage.

  • @limitless4249
    @limitless4249 Před 5 lety +129

This is false logic. True, asking to make the same money is insane because revenues are not the same. But, asking to make the same percentage means nothing either. You have to specify "same percentage" of... what. If you mean same percentage of profits (i.e. revenue - costs), then yeah, I'm with you. But if you just mean same percentage of total revenue, without accounting for costs, then you make absolutely zero sense, unless costs to revenue ratio is the exact same (which it isn't).
Let me give an example that isn't far from reality:
Let's say the NBA annual income and expenses, for the whole league, are as follows:
    -Revenue: $6000M (or $6G)
-Costs (every possible expense except player salary): $3000M (or $3G)
    -Player salary: $3000M (or $3G)
-Percentage of Revenue that goes to Player salary: 50%
-There are 30 NBA teams, and each has up to 15 players on its roster, so there are up to 450 players in the league at any given moment. This leaves every team with $100M to spend on their roster. If these numbers were exact, it would mean an average salary of $6.7M per player.
Now let's say the WNBA numbers looked like this (which is pretty close actually):
    -Revenue: $28M
-Costs (i.e. every possible expense except player salary): $21M
    -Player salary: $7M
-Percentage of Revenue that goes to Player salary: 25%
-There are 12 WNBA teams, and each has up to 12 players on its roster, so there are up to 144 players in the league at any given moment. This leaves every team with roughly $583K to spend on their roster. If these numbers were exact, it would mean an average salary of roughly $49K per player.
Now, you could cry about WNBA players making "only" 25% of league revenue VS NBA players making 50% of league revenue. But that's only because the NBA is much, much more profitable. In other words, the little the WNBA makes as a league is barely enough to cover the costs of doing business (i.e. arena rent, equipment, staff, security, travel expenses, electricity, etc.), so they're left with almost nothing to pay their players. Heck, if the WNBA wasn't subsidized by the NBA, the revenue would be even lower, actually so much lower that that there would not even be anything left to pay the players, and the owners would have to pay the roster out of their own pockets, which would mean that nobody would ever want to own a WNBA team.
The solution is either to lower costs or to increase revenue. Lowering costs would be a big challenge since they are already cutting so much (teams don't even charter their flights; they fly coach. For Christ sake! even top NCAA Woman Basketball Teams fly private). And many WNBA teams chose to fly to their out of state away games on gameday just to avoid paying for a hotel night. So increasing revenue is the only viable solution. And the key to achieve that is to make the sport much more entertaining. Many options here: lowering the rim to allow for real dunks and athletic plays, shortening the 3-pt line distance, making players wear sexy tight team uniforms to attrack male audience which is almost absent from the fanbase.

No, they can't pay the same percentage, its simply not feasible. Why? The facilities cost the same, the cost of merchandise costs the same, everything costs the same. Lets just say, the NBA generates $600 in revenue and costs = $100. Of course the Owners can split 50/50 and make a profit. Now lets be generous and say the WNBA generates $150 but the costs are still $100. They owners obviously can't split the $150 50/50 because the league would make a loss. Trust me, if it was feasible, they'd raise the salaries, but it just ISN'T

No, the league will never pay more just because it's feasible. And the women need to realize complaining that it's not fair isn't going to get them anywhere either. NBA players make more than WNBA players (as a percentage), for the same reason they make more NFL players, for the same reason US men's soccer players make more than their much better female counterparts. The reason: They have a better union. They negotiate harder. They are willing to strike and stand together through a lockout. The women need to learn they will make more not when they earn it, but when they demand it.

Roberto Monzon the difference is that NBA players can negotiate because they’re making big money and there’s a huge demand for the sport. If WNBA players went the “pay us more or else” route the owners would probably just be like “fuck it we don’t need them anyways” because they’re not making enough money to be demanding more.

In terms of raw numbers, the WNBA generates roughly $60 million in revenue every season. That may sound like a lot, but when matched up against the $70 million the league costs to run, it actually loses roughly $10 million with each passing year. If u look at the numbers you realise they are actually overpaid.

    1) Has Katie Nolan ever paid for a ticket for a WNBA game? She always posts photos of herself at NFL, MLB, NBA games etc, but I don't remember seeing any photos of her at a WNBA one.
    2) Getting paid an equal % of their league's revenue as the NBA players (or given just getting paid a significantly greater % than they currently are) is not remotely feasible due to costs and overheads, that's just basic economics. If that happened, there would be nowhere near enough money to cover expenses, pay other people behind the scenes etc, and the league would definitely fold quickly unless the NBA continued to prop it up but with larger handouts.
Given that the entire league loses money (usually 10 million or more) every year (that's not comparable to certain NBA teams recording losses), we can safely say WNBA players are actually overpaid compared to their market worth.

Mix social justice activism and a failed attempt at "comedy" and inject them into sports unnecessarily with counterfactual and deceptive positions. I'm sure this show is going to last. It's just what everyone wants to spend their time watching on a sports network rather than actual news or footage of sports. These ESPN producers are geniuses putting together quality programming like this.

Who wants to bet 💰 that the majority of people complaining about how WNBA players deserve more money have never been to a WNBA game 😑 Gotta admit though that the WNBA players asking for the same percentages of shared revenue for their league like their male counterparts actually makes sence. Not asking for N.B.A.-like cash just more of the money that they help the WNBA create. If only this host brought that up in the beginning of the video instead of halfway through 😐. Make your point! Don't complain then explain. Explain first and maybe people would be more open to listening.

No it doesn't make sense. Let's say operating costs of WNBA is $10, and they make $15 and WNBA players want 40% of revenue WNBA would be then down to only $9 and cannot operate the league. However, lets say NBA costs $20 to operate and make $80 in revenue and NBA players get 40% of revenue, that's still leaves $48 for NBA to operate. WNBA players cannot get the same share because they don't make enough money. They should be thankful WNBA exists.

The WNBA star players add little to nothing to the league's value. The value of the NBA lies in the Lebrons and Steph Currys. The value of the WNBA lies it's brand as a female counterpart to the NBA. So if they're not as valuable to the league, they shouldn't see the same percentage of the revenue.

There's only enough decent-good players to fill out a small handful of teams at the college level. That's why you saw UCONN and Tennessee win practically every year. There's more talent in men's so while there's still teams that can be stacked with it, that talent is spread out between more teams, thus heightening the competition.
