- Whats the best Budget Friendly Quiet Generator? In todays video I compare two inverter generators that are "inexpensive" compared to some of the competition. One is available at Harbor Freight and the other at Costco. When i am looking for a quiet generator, the most important benefit is the the noise level. So I test the sound of these generators at 30ft, 10ft and right next to them to see which one is quieter... ENJOY!!!

VERY happy with my Firman! Bought it on sale for $600 (goes on sale about twice a year) and I use strictly propane, because I can store several propane containers and not have to worry about it going bad. Highly recommend
Here’s a thing he’s gotta try….
I’ve had 2 Firman Gennys…. But they haven’t been inverters. One was a 7000 and the newer one is a tri-fuel 9000. A very important thing we noticed…. It’s much quieter on propane. Also much cheaper to run these days. I don’t know if the inverters will display the same behaviour…. But you should measure on propane and see.
Bro! During the sound test, you have the exhaust pointed toward you on the firman and away from you on the predator. Of course it's going to be louder.
I was gonna buy the 3500, but I already had the Predator 8750 that I bought 3 yrs ago that I hardly used. I use it everyday for detailing it is loud, but it's a work horse. Used it to run my whole house and my 5ton AC unit ( AC unit was ran by itself) but I'm very pleased with the predator generators.
thanks again Josh, your tips are very helpfull!!!
Great comparison, I was surprised to hear that you didn’t stay on top of routine maintenance on a piece of equipment so important to your work, but then I realized you get so much stuff for free, you don’t really have to worry about replacements .
Honestly it’s a bad excuse but it just slips my mind and time is short… working full days, making videos, and hanging with the family puts the maintenance in the back burner. Again, not a good excuse but it is true ha
@@imjoshv great video this for your time making it I know how much time it can take to wind a video together so sup thanks.
Great comparison, thanks Josh 😁👍
Living out in the country a generator is a must Ryobi 3600 is what I use for now but Harbor Freight looks good thanks Josh for another great video
Excellent video! Thank you.
I bought a firman on sale about a year ago ran extremely good was so stoked on it kept it in good condition and well maintained at the 5 month mark electric start gave out lost all power took it to a shop trough the warranty I was told they have a compression issue an to just return it I did and got the same unit and had the same electric start issue just returned it and got a champion just my experience but hope it works for everyone that gets it 🤙🏽
Getting the firman for the rv set up perfect great buy good reviews
I have the Firman that I got from Costco. It’s been great. I use it for camping. It’s kind of a pain to change the oil, but that’s my only complaint. I’ve changed oil 5 times. Other than that it’s an awesome unit.
Aweome! Yeah changing the oil or even filling the oil on any of these types of generators is a pain and almost impossible not to spill haha
I've changed mine only once so far, but it was very easy! What I did was get a contained car oil drain pan and set the unit on top of the drain pan and let her drain... Then fill it right back up. The oil is contained inside the drain pan and no leaks.
Question - I enjoy detailing my black, GMC Yukon every 1.5 - 2 weeks. I really liked Turtle wax, "Max Wax" followed with "Flex Wax". Beautiful depth and gloss. I recently found out about the dangers of graphene oxide in the body, its really bad, and I will no longer be using or purchasing graphene products. Im pretty focused on Ceramic products now. Because I detail so often, I dont need a super long lasting product, but I do want depth, shine, protection and ease of use. Do you have some suggestions to replace Max Wax & Flex Wax that doesnt have graphene? Thank for your input!
Great comparison!! Quieter is nice!!
Thanks!
@IMJOSHV so can I use an extension cord to run a pancake compressor and shop vac with the predator?
There are some decent deals at Harbor Freight. That generator seems to be one of them. Thanks!
Just bought the powersmart 4400 from Walmart for $298. Not super quite but not too loud. If it holds up I'll be a steal of a deal 🤙🏼
How long have you owned that generator
Link please
@ismondragon about 3 weeks haven't got around to using until this weekend
how it holding up
I've been wanting one of the harbor freight generators for a while now. Curious to see how good it is.
I have a 05 4runner and im planning to put the generator in the back but im not sure if i can leave it in the trunk while working or take it outside every time im on a job?
I dig the dual fuel option, I have 3 -125 gallon tanks..guess that would keep things rollin for a while during an outage..
thats for sure!
What type of pressure washer and pump do you run for your systems
I bought the Lowe's version after watching your video and reporting back. This thing was obnoxiously loud out of the box even in eco mode, so bad I started looking for a muffler option and I'm a guy who used to drag race back in my day. 😅
I've put about 20 hours on it now and it's much more tolerable. I'm guessing there's matting in the muffler that needed to break in or something. 🤷
Very nice!!!
Thanks
Josh if the Firman hasn’t been broken in it could still become quieter. I’m sure you’re going to like it once it’s fully broken in. Have you used any of the Champion Inverters? I have a 4650 Inverter with Bluetooth start and it’s badass too.
Thats a good point, but I actually remember the Predator being even quiter than it is now when it was new. The firman is still an ice quiet unit though... Just not quite as quiet. I used a Chamiobn 2000watt inverter generator and it was great. I actuallty gave it to my brother and he still uses it to this day!!
What's the best one should I get for a food truck
Looks like the Firman has a 193cc engine and the Predator has a 212cc engine. Yet the Firman is pushing more starting/running watts. That leads me to believe that the Firman would almost have to run harder/louder to generate the same wattage. I own the Firman and its been great, but it's definitely not as quiet as some others I have owned (due to less insulation).
I wonder how much running propane in the Firman would effect noise level
Not that much if any difference in other vid I watched according to owners of em.
Ever tried diesel generator (Yanmar, etc.)?
Good video but disappointed you had the Firman exhaust pointed at you and the other away. Would love to know what it would have been if same/same. Have to say I'm leaning towards it once it comes on sale at Costco. Love their return policy and the the fact that it is Dual Fuel.....huge Win!
I know it looks like it was facing the camera but it wasn’t. Maybe the second one is for the propane side??? But the exhausts on both units were pointing away. This is definitely louder than the other, but overall it’s still very quiet. I’ve been using it in my truck and I like it a lot.
Josh plz compare these to the pulsar 4000 watt generator total game changer
I got this from Costco for $499 a few years ago
Would like to see a test of the output power on an oscilloscope to see if there’s a difference in the “clean” power output. That would actually make a bigger practical difference than a couple of dB.
Yea I’ve seen project farm dive deep into that stuff!!! I’ll try and look into getting some more measuring devices for that
@@imjoshv yeah, Project Farm goes DEEP in his videos. Love that guy’s stuff.
Can I run my refrigerator and 1 ac unit on it?
Great video man! One thing I noticed is that the exhaust on the Firman was pointed toward you when doing the decibel reading where the predator seemed to be pushing exhaust away. It seems obvious that the predator is quieter but the decibel reading on the fireman may have been lower if the exhaust wasn’t pointing towards where you’re measuring.
I actually had them pointing the same direction. I know at one point it did shoot out a bit of smoke which made it look like it was from the other side, but they were both exhausts were paint up the driveway and away from the camera. I thought the same thing you mentioned when i was setting up so i made sure of it!! Thanks!!
I've always understood " LPG " is Liquified Petroleum Gas. The gas is compressed until it becomes a liquid much more dense and better to ship or move around.
I just bought a Pulsar 4000W on sale from Lowe’s for $479. This is the best bang for buck option for just starting a mobile detailing business, in my opinion.
Thats incredible. Ill check it out!!
It’s shows up at 680 for me but the run time is at 4.5 hours.
@@imjoshvlooks like an interesting unit, would love your thoughts in a video on some even cheaper options. I like that you are abusing & not changing oil and still running the predator. Thats a big plus for a biz. Feels like paying less for a unit with a smaller gas tank could save some more money & can just carry around cheap gas can to keep running.
@@MarkTrades__ yeah it makes for a better video has he has done without changing oil etc to show how durable the unit is so I think it’s a super test of that gen.
better check valves before start tightttttt
What a beautiful entrance to your house, how about a house tour to see how Californians live?
Can i use an air gun and a steamer at the same time with the 3500 predator?
Depends on the size of the air compressor but I mine works together no problem!!!
I am completely happy with the Predator 9500 to which I added an external 14gal tank and built a shed which can hold two predators. I've only had to use it once in the nearly two years that I've had it for our all-electric home. It is pretty quiet and even more so in the shed.
Our house is all "gas," wherever feasible.
1. hundreds of videos already have been done on these. 2. Its funny that your doing a video on generators that california (where you live) wants to ban people from buying/using.
Propane is still the best way to go even if you don’t have as much power as gasoline, but it will start and that’s the most important thing period 😊
I'm curious I've also heard of Wen DF451i, Westinghouse 4500W, and Genmax wondering if they're comparable to predator
That Firman screams Champion Generator all over🤔
The firman generators seem to be a decent alternative to the predator i personally have a robin Subaru I’ve had it now 12 years or more no issues I just regularly maintain it use it for camping thanks josh
How do I use them for home use ?
Run the wires to your breaker panel
Firman and Champion looks identical with exceptional of the blue color trim of the fireman's
Q ?? Are they the same ?? 🤔
Not a fair comparison for sound when the Firman exhaust was twds camera and the other one opposite was
You can put mufflers on these firmans like a Camry one is good.
They both great but I went with Chamnpion
That’s a great choice too!!
i just bought one today from HF, and with shipping and taxes 596.26
That’s awesome! I personally like that one better but the way the panel works on the firman works better for my truck set up. I’ve had the predator for a while and it’s been great and it’s quieter
I have a Honda EU 2000. The best! But gas generators will probably be outlawed in Commiefornia in a few years
As long as they’re carb compliant they’ll be fine here.
Too bad CaliforniaNation changing a lot. Power goes out all time and can’t even charge electric car when need to so now every one looking for gems down that way but heard they want to outlaw natural gas and propane as well. Would nev love there gonna move hehe. Blessings
It’s only a prototype but you might enjoy seeing this combo generator + pressure washer: czcams.com/video/lilETThA-20/video.htmlsi=cJ-PuTHR0Ox01sxS&t=347
change your oil if you continue to neglect that it will fail no matter what the brand is
Whats up josh
Hello Hello!!!
Lmao predator cheaper than firman I bought my firman at 649 same exact unit brand new 🤣🤣🤣
Your sound tests are not worth much.
Nice try.
Firman is junk biggest piece of crap I ever bought
Little Harbor Freight hack, if you buy the warranty on the generator you can return it every year or every 2 years and get a brand new one no questions asked. You can even upgrade.
But they say you can only return once on it then warranty is gone. Costco can be multiple times and u don’t have to buy the warranty but predator may be a better unit in my eyes anyways
Morality hack eh ?
I just hook my GF up to the stationary bike generator, quiet(except for me yelling "pedal harder") and she stays thin. Everybodys happy.
Me too! I have 3 girlfriends and just have them swap out if the power ever goes out! Works perfectly!
