Fireworks basics : MAKING FIREWORKS FOUNTAINS

  • Hello everyone, today I will show you how I made fireworks fountains. This simple device produce long flames and shoot a bunch of beautiful sparks into the sky.
I made two different compositions for two different effects. Those compositions are black powder based. The first one contains some 325 mesh magnalium to produce bright white sparks and a little bit of coarse pine charcoal. This effect does work with aluminium or titanium as well. Using coarser metallic fuel can produce even brighter and long lasting sparks.
The second composition contains about 30% coarse charcoal mixed with black powder. It creates long lasting golden sparks that fly into the air. It’s a very beautiful yet very simple composition that doesn’t require a ton of chemicals. You can add more charcoal to slow down the combustion and have an effect that looks like a fire camp or add less to have a more powerful effect.
The third and last composition is just made of the first one, aka silver composition in which I added about 15% microstars. Those were 3mm yellow microstars. Unfortunately we didn’t really see them. Either because they were too small or because I used water and dextrin as a binder and made them too fragile.
To make the fountains, I had to build some specials tools. I made the base and the rams out of a 16mm round wood dowel. The spindle was made using 7mm diameter nail in which I drilled a hole to put fuse and and prime the fountain.
The three tubes contained about 30g of propellant each and lasted for 15 to 20 seconds.

I hope you enjoyed… If so don’t forget to like, share and subscribe !!!
DON’T TRY THIS IF YOU’RE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU’RE DOING !!!
NB : My channel is not dedicated to pyrotechnics !! Of course I made a lot of video about it (although 3 is not that much) and I will continue on making them but there is a ton of interesting subject and craft to learn and show on video. For example, the next video will be about homemade photography accessories (not sliders that have been done more than enough on CZcams). I might also try to build a star tracking mount for astrophoto but that’s not sure… (Tell me in the comments if you’re interested 😉 ) I will also make other electronics and DIY projects.

Very nice work, I feel that your charcoal is a little to fast ( Hot ) for what your trying to do. Normally willow, or grapevine is the best for fast charcoal, but for a ground fountain I would use a hard wood for my charcoal instead for a slower burn rate to keep your fountain burning longer. I make my own charcoal with a empty new one gallon paint can, that I drill a small hole in the top of the can, and place into camp fire on the hot embers, and add a little wood when needed to keep the fire burning at the right temp. I wait until there is no steam ( Smoke ) coming out the hole, I pick it up with a stick, and if it feels light I know its done, and let it cool. Always clean the bark off, and cut the knots out, this way your charcoal has a consisted burn rate. Charcoal can make or break your black powder, and it is very important to have different kinds of charcoal for different projects. I also re- crystalize my potassium nitrate until I get it pure. I re- crystalize everything with distilled water, filter, and air dry. My chemicals being so pure gives me professional results that money cant buy. I learned a lot from watching my pyro friends on CZcams, I actually learned a lot from ( Ned Gorski Fireworking 101 ) CZcams channel, I really am impressed with your work with making those fountains, something I really want to get into. I know You know your stuff.

    • @_thefrenchmaker

I don't really know what happened with those stars. Either they were crushed or they were to small. I used dextrin as a binder and perhaps it made the stars to fragile. I think it would be better to use red gum or phenolic resin as a binder but I don't have some. I've seen fountains with phenolic resin binded microstars that were fine so I don't really know what was the issue...

I have made a few presses over the years for pressed tube drivers gerbs and the like. I like welding a 1/2 inch drive socket to the Allber press T handle portion and use a clicker torque wrench to get the performances of the tubes closer. I would think it would work for your micro stars also to dial it in. I use it for gerindolas and just ease of hâveing to pound all these tubes.

Could you hold one in your hand while wearing fireproof gloves or are they too hot even for that?

    • @PyroCreationZ
      @PyroCreationZ Před 3 lety +5

No, don't do that unless you want to lose some fingers or your hand some day!
The tube might indeed become very hot (depends on tube wall thickness). I recon you'd be able to hold it with a glove but that doesn't mean you should! Why not?
This is a choked fountain which means it builds up pressure inside. And when pressure is present, it can blow apart. That's why you should never hold a device like this in your hand.
An unchoked fountain doesn't have this pressure danger and would be safer to hold in your hand but even then I don't recommend it. Sparks can still fall on your hand and hurt/burn you.
A bangal fire (in a thick enough casing) is much safer to (and designed) to hold in your hand (think of a road flare for example). But those have different (safer) compositions than fountains.
Still, as a general rule of thumb: never hold firework devices in your hand.

Black powder works fine when being hand mixed but ball milling it will give you far better results. I've done some tests and it burns 3 to 4 times faster in my case when ball milled. If you don't have the proper tools you can use a blender to pulverize each chemicals before mixing them. Adding sodium bicarbonate will indeed slow down the combustion rate of your composition but it won't create a particularly stable burn (it's used in some glitter compositions for this effect). The best way to slow down your black powder is to tweak the oxidizer/fuel ratio. Try to lower the potassium nitrate amount and increase the charcoal one and do some small batch test until you find your sweet spot :)
