    Do not save up a bunch of film rolls to do a "developing night" if you use the LabBox. The LB does one roll at a time, then has to be cleaned and fully dried on order for the film loading to work properly. You will spend more time washing and waiting to dry the reels than you will running the complete film development process. Either casually do a roll or two at one sitting, or pass on the LB and get a more conventional tank setup (which will also cost a lot less $$$) and make a dark place to load the tank with multiple reels of film.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  Před 4 lety +1

      Randall Stewart You are not wrong at all. It does take some time to clean up the Lab Box tank just to then go back and do another roll. But the thing I would say as a newcomer to developing is... It takes me less time to clean the Lab Box then it does to put a 120 roll on to a Patterson spool. I’ve tried years ago and thats why i never got into home developing. I know Practice makes perfect, but in this case I would preferred a quick rinse and dry to do the next roll.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 Před 4 lety

      Paterson tanks/reels are junk. Any other brand will be easier to use and not leak like a sieve. During the Kickstarter, one of the "come-ons" was the inclusion of a second reel so you could use a second reel while the first one is drying. That promise went in the dumpster when they designed separate 120 and 35mm reels, and they cheated on that by providing only one reel core for two reel flang sets, meaning that (1) you cannot do the two reels two-step originally planned, and (2) who have to break down the reel and reassemble each time you change film type. In the end. They also failed to produce the digital tank top which was what arguably made the tank worth its high price. They say it will come along in January 2020 - don't hold your breath, as they seem to be working hard to forget producing it.

    If you are starting new at this, the Cinestill water heater looks like an optional luxury, but if you are going to do color film, it quickly earns back its cost in frustration and hassle avoided. To reduce cost, pass the Cinestill unit at $100 and check out a similar product sold by Film Photographers Project (FPP) for $50.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  Před 4 lety

      Randall Stewart i didn’t know the FPP had one. Damn maybe I should have looked out for that. As for the souve... I really have not had any problems setting it put and keeping the chemicals at temp. Maybe someday I can graduate to the Cinestill one... But till then ill cook my meat and develop my film with the same tool 🤣

      Steve Tolloczko Oh nice! Well I hope you enjoy! Once you heat the chemicals up to the right temp, just pour them in. The chemicals wont cool down enough for it to make any difference at all once in the box... Unless you leave them there... but then you will have different issues :) Honestly just follow along with the instructions and all will be good. The Restoration of Dr Who ... You could buy a Patterson Tank from eBay or Craigslist that rangers from $10-$40.
      And you can definitely use hot tap water but it’s hard to keep the temperature consistent especially your first time. It’s also a giant pain and takes much longer. My first time doing it that way I needed to add boiling water to keep my water temperature at the right temp. With all the steps going on I wanted one thing to be consistent and work haha

      @@therestorationofdrwho1865 Get an AP brand tank, which is also sold as the rebadged house brand of tank at both B&H and Freestyle. Better design than Patterson and usually somewhat cheaper at around $25. Skip buying used plastic reel tanks from ebay or CL. You don't save much money that way, and the product often comes with the reels fouled by lack of cleaning, making them hell to load.

    So... question, please! I have a lab box too but didn't start using it yet. With the Cinestill c41 kit it says you get roughly 24 rolls from the chemicals. If you're halving the recipe because the lab box doesn't hold much liquid and only holds a single roll at a time... does that mean you're able to develop more than 24 rolls? Or is it still the same? Trying to figure that out. Thanks!

    Looking back from August 2020, here's my take on the economics of Lab-Box, now that they have finally produced about 95% of what they promised their Kickstarter backers. While the Paterson tank system is a piece of crap, there are others similar which do a good job for about $30. The retail price on LB basic parts is about $200 for a 35mm/120 setup, plus another $90 for the digital lid option. Add the reel crank which he recommends here and you are over $300. That is TEN TIMES the cost of conventional tank with two reels. So, with that cost ratio, how is the LB for someone new to DIY film processing? Answer: It is not! The Kickstarter folks like me got a discount plus a few additional bits on the side. So, a full LB package which would cost you $320 or so, cot me $180. At my price, the cost or value received is questionable. The effective buyer target is someone already into darkroom work, who doesn't really need a Lab-Box unit, who is drawn to gadgets, and has a lot of disposable cash to basically waste. I suggest that in the whole world, half of those folks were in the some 750 Kickstarter backers, and their might be another 750 out there who will pay full retail. After that, those additional retail products are going just gather dust in the warehouse. I submit that the current retail prices of LB are hugely inflated and unnecessary. Remember that the cost of development and setting up production were paid for by me and other KS backers. Ars didn't have much financial skin in that game. Even so, Ars got 7 times as much money as they sought and claims to have burned though it such that they have to change their KS backers more money just to fulfill the KS package. The other side of that coin is that their future costs are limited to production materials and labor, marketing and profit. That could price the LB down to retail at $75, opening up a whole new market. But, they aren't going to do that. The current retail is based on a significant markup over the KS cost to start the LB production, totally artificial and hugely excessive, because ARS is as bad at marketing as they were at production design. Prediction: in 2 years, new LB availability will be limited to product on hand in the warehouses of venders, manufacturer's support will be gone, and the LB will effectively be history. As inventory reduces, there will be a final "blow out sale" for retailers to clean it out - probably around $75 each.

      @BadFlashes  Před 4 lety

      I concur!

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 Před 3 měsíci

      For what it's worth, we are now three years later, so how did my predictions work out? (1) ARS-Imago has never done any marketing for the Lab-Box. (2) ARS-Imago provides absolutely no support or customer reply to inquiries. (They are still in business.) (3) Official prices remain unreduced, so I was wrong there. Rather than a "blow out" followed by termination, there seems to be a slow leakage or trickle of sales. The big aspect I never anticipated is that the Chinese manufacturer which ARS-Imago hired to make the parts and assemble the tank is currently making the Lab-Box on its own, selling it though Ali-Express (like a Chinese Amazon) for less than $40, i.e., less than 30% of the ARS price. These are not just "similar". They are a Lab-Box in every respect, including the name plate.
