The thread your sewing with, it looks to thick to be sewing thread and to thin to be the same thread you uses for the actual blanket? Looks amazing and I love the personal touch the hand stitching gives. Amazing video.
It is crochet 🧶 thread 🧵. I like to use it because it is thicker and more sturdy than sewing thread. Which I need since the blanket will be heavy. And it is thinner than the yarn. I want the look of thread but I also need durability. I’m so glad that you liked the video and found it helpful.
For the very first stitch, how do you secure it or tie it off?
Good question. I like to tie a knot or tow at the end of my crochet thread that I have cut off to use. Then I go between the two layers of fabric where the fabric is folded and pop my needle up and out of the fabric and then start my stitching. I don't start unpinning until I feel like the area I have just worked is secure and isn't gonna budge. i hope that helped.
Do I need to make the border on my blanket before I sew the fabric on?
Yes you do.
My knitted blanket has a crocheted border, which is flaired. What is my challenge to add a backing with a flared border?
If you are adding the fabric behind that flared back part of the blanket, you might have to get extra fabric and basically create a ruffle. But if you are just trying to add the fabric to the back of the crocheted part, then there shouldn't be any challenges.

Can I cut something knitted like a blanket and sew it into something new like a purse or mittens?
My nana left a lot of her knitting projects left unfinished before she passed and I would like to reuse some of it if I can!
I don’t see why not. That’s actually what I would like to do soon. Is crochet some hats and then add the lining to it.
How would we do the opposite, just a border?
The opposite? The border I did is a 10 Stitch crochet pattern. I have a video on it. I have a video on the Diamond Waffle Variation stitch I did for the blanket as well. I believe at the end of the waffle stitch explains how to transition from the blanket to the border.
How would you wash this? I noticed you did not prewash the material.
For the fabric you would put it through the hottest cycle you can. You want the shrinking to get done in the beginning. I don't prewash the yarn. Some people do it by adding it to a mesh bag or pillowcase. The aftercare after the afghan has gotten dirty is to soak it. Add it to some warm water and cleaner of your choice in a bath tub and let it soak. You can soak it a once or twice depending on how dirty it got. Then just rinse it well and you can lay it flat on something to let it dry. Ive used the dryer before for quick dry. I just tucked it into bed sheet and tied off the bed sheet before drying since it wouldn't fit in a pillowcase.
