    I grew up on Weber grills for 20+ years. The old models were great. Had 4-5 models. But this current Gen 2 Weber pellet grill is just dangerous IMO. Good job man having the guts to call out this lack of an effective grease management system. Your illustrations seem spot on. Thank you for looking out for the average consumer who can't see these dangers from the store aisles just looking at the box exterior. I actually bought my Pit Boss 1150 just two days before I saw your video and this was only the 2nd video I had seen that even eluded to or began to address this grease fire safety concern in the Weber grills. On my PB1150, I'm doing as Dead Broke BBQ recommended and I'm putting my BBQ at a 1-2" slope from left to right to further facilitate grease run off into the pail, eventhough the PB has a fantastic 3+ inch drop slope to its internal grease management system. Seriously man, you are a hero to the American Consumer! Nice work! No BBQ dinner in the world is worth the price of a house fire, or loss of a child due to an unattended grill having a grease fire, especially one that could have been designed to be prevented by the Engineers at Weber, but who failed to do their job and design for safety rather than perceived flavor. Yeah, I can out cook the best BBQ pit masters by lighting a fire to my hardwood oak floors in my own living room... awesome oak flavor to my steaks and chops... but that doesn't mean it's a good idea or even safe to do so. Somethings are just a bad idea because they aren't safe. The Weber product manager should be fired for not having the common sense to see this and fix these safety issues at the Engineering/Design level. How the hell did this thing ever pass legal?

    No need to worry about the Smokefire Grease System. Admittedly it doesn't work as designed but everyone has already figure out that you can easily, I mean EASILY put a drip pan under your cook. Kind of a no-brainer fix for that. The other grills that I am familiar with basically have the drip pan built in.
    The thing that sold me on the Smokefire was that quality of the food possible on this Smokefire. I am far form the only one who notices that. It just cooks better with more smokey flavor. The smoke ring it gets is all you need to know about the Smokefires efficiency.
    The build quality is exceptional as well.
    I have a Genesis Gas Grill but I am not particularly a Weber Fanboy although there is plenty of reason to favor their products. I studied up on what's available for a pellet smoker and chose the Smokefire just as soon as the Gen 2 came out. Since we were moving at the time and staying with family while remodeling our new home before moving in it took me awhile to get around using it. In that time they have upgraded the software several times. Once I started using it I loved it and have had no problems so far.
    However there are several other grills I considered. One is the Traeger Ironwood and the other is the Camp Chef Woodwind. At the price I think the Woodwind in an exceptional offering. If the build quality was equal to the Smokefire or the Ironwood I wood have bought one.
    So far I have enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work.

    Great comparison Tommy. I looked at both of these pits when I was looking for a new one. The Weber issue was the grease management and the Pitboss for me was the 3 racks. Not enough space between them to really load up the pit with thick meat. I ended up jumping all in with the Yoder YS640.

    First off you had the ex6 roaring then said low and slow. I have the ex4 and ex6. You have to know what your using it for before you cook. For burgers or steak on high you have to have it clean that’s obvious. Low and slow you can get away with a lil crud. They had major prob with the 1st gen and they addressed that. Gave out gen2 to anyone with a 1. Even with the old one I used to have I’ve never had a fire prob. It was more with the auger getting jammed. Customer service so good it literally made me buy the ex6 the next day.

    Good review Tommy. The grease removal system was something that put me on the fence before buying the SF. I found keeping it level along with spending 5 minutes beforehand to do a quick clean keep it running like a champ. The 5 minutes clean before consists of scraping any ash and grease to the drain holes. I spend more time on the kettle before using than the SF. I came from a Pit Boss which had a grease fire so bad I had to call the fire department. The manual said to just dump the ash management cup and that would take care of that. It said nothing about having to take the screws out of the plate which covers the burn pot and having to vacuum that out. After 5 uses enough ash and grease built up to where it ignited and almost took out my gazebo and fence. I put a review on both the Walmart and Pit Boss site for how dangerous the Brunswick was and they never published it. Lost all faith in Pit Boss at that time. Great review though Tommy, I appreciate your honesty.

    • @thegalleryBBQ
      @thegalleryBBQ  Před 2 lety +1

      Troy, thanks brother for keeping it level. People need to understand what is important to them, maybe different to you. Use a pan under low and slows and this pit rocks. I just wish weber included a plate for low and slows. Heck. If they include a large drip play id use it and it would have changed the whole review! Cheers!

    • @troyv8302
      @troyv8302 Před 2 lety

      @@thegalleryBBQ I agree. You would think someone there would have figured out a better grease removal system. Would think even angling it from the center burn chamber down to the left and right with the goofy buckets on the sides and an ash removal system in the center would have made this one of the better cookers out there while solving it's main issue. Since they didn't do that, I use a drip pan under the protein for low and slows. Not much different than I do with the SnS where I foil the section under the protein. Not the best system but not impossible to work with either. Cheers!

  • @DrewOtisSandberg
    @DrewOtisSandberg Před 11 měsíci +1

    Treager and most pellet grills are only low and slow. Take 30 to get to temp if you want it high. The Weber takes like 10min to get to 600. SmokeFire is meant for Weber users. It’s grillers moving into smoking and can do both. I still think the grease management could use some work but I’ll never worry about a Weber product with their CS.

    Bought the 1600 just after it came out and have watched all your videos on it. The reason I really like the 3 rack system was simply for more ribs. Once trimmed I had 12 racks comfortably on it. I had trouble understanding the grease management at 1st till I realized I was not level. Derrrr. After that, right in the bucket. I was not a fan of the hopper grate so I removed it. Wanted to be able to use my flavored pellets for the smoking, empty as many as possible and then use the cheaper competition blend once wrapped. The inner coating also started to flake and I had to high pressure it away. I have been extremely happy with my purchase and so has my family. Take care brother. Wow Tommy, that was a real deal honest review. You are totally right about that Weber and that’s why the recommend you use catch pans below the grates. As far as the pit boss goes, I personally don’t like their drip pan as it is hard to keep clean too. Eventually the slide plate that gives you the option to seat is eventually going to get stuck or gunned up too. I really like the smokers like GMG and Traeger that have a flat grease pan/slide. Give you the option for replacement liners or even foil. Bottom line is ALL pellet smokers require maintenance and I tell my customers if that cleaning is required after or before every cook.

    i bought the weber and love it. The smoke flavor is much better than my old green mountain.. I am guessing because of the flavorizer bars as opposed to a plate that blocks a lot of drippings from burning and putting off a great smoke. At low temp, the smoke is extreme. I clean out ash after every long cook. And scrape grease out of it when I see it build up. I burn a lot of tree limbs and trash and just throw all the flavorizer bars and grates in the fire. Next day, all clean.
    No fire issues. Gets hot for searing. Again because of flavorizer bars, you get similar cook to a gas grill. You get the best of both worlds. Only complaint is pellets still get stuck in hopper. They need to center the auger in the middle of hopper instead of one end. I dump remaining pellets and store dry. I think my old grill had issues with damp pellets that stayed in the grill after I was finished using it. Fire starts every time now. Overall does a great job. Also was able to get the front and side shelves at Home Depot. Needed accessory in my opinion. I think if you clean it up after long cooks (briskets) you wont have any fire issues.

But I believe u shouldn't have too especially if they went back to the drawing board with this thing. They were better off making an oil drip system similar to pit boss or come up with an add on that can easily be installed to redirect the oil directly into the oil pan. Overall adding a water pan isn't a big deal and besides that I like the grill. Great video 👍

I have replaced the flavorizer bars a few times, but the burners only once. Still the original grates and looking great and the ignitor still works. This grill survived a tornado in NC a few years back. Weber make good stuff. This pellet grill may need a few changes to be more competitive but I think your video was fair in calling this out. I own an EX6 and its been solid, no fires to speak of and really can't complain yet. For low and slow cooks, I use a pan underneath to catch grease and serve as a water pan too. Because the Weber reaches 600f, for searing or using it as a regular q, I just make sure after every cook I do a quick clean to avoid any potential issues.

I so much wanted it to work because I really liked the looks of it and the possibilities. With the hotspots along with the grease management system not to mention the poor Hopper system makes it a loser. It’s too bad to be honest, they really could’ve hit a home run by just addressing the simplest of problems. I have no idea what their engineering department was thinking. In any case, for now my CharGriller 980 will fit the bill, I’ve been very happy with it, even heat and with the help of external probes I can monitor accurate temperature which is manageable. A pellet grill is still in my plans, good chance it will be a pit boss, zero chance it will be a weber.

    Good review Tommy. Love the channel! Big fan - I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning. I’ll weigh in. I have the Weber SF and love it. Pit holds temps extremely well. Juno tech in their controller - 5 degrees control - 600 degree temp - smoke boost - love it! I’ll be in the minority - best pellet grill for $800 - hands down. Problem with grease fires is most people don’t clean their grills. 5 min of your time will save you the hassle. Even better, put a pan below to catch the grease if you don’t want to clean at all. Had a Traeger and hated the grease can. One time when I didn’t clean where it drained and I got a grease fire (my fault) - can happen with any grill. Lastly, I don’t know how Pitboss’ CS is but I know Webers. In this category Weber is 2nd to none - amazing! I had an issue with my lid - called CS - replaced immediately - no questions asked. Cheers!

I feel if Weber would give some sort of plate for low and slow that would change everything. Even if they included a few long grease catcher pans in the box would have changed my review. but they didn't. I have a Beef Short Rib recipe coming and the SF really did an awesome job with color and flavor. Real awesome. The main reason I may have to let this pit go is the burn mark on my deck.
