Totally agree that in deep runs where you feel like you have an edge, to avoid marginal spots and really focus on ICM implications.

You really forgot about the big picture; you need to pick your spots at a final table with bigger jumps and not the one hand, you really could have picked a better spot to put that many chips in the middle. Remember the big picture not the single hand where you can smell that there is something wrong. His perspective is key also; he is in the top 3 and does he want to bluff to drop him to the bottom 2 if you call. Its always easy to look back.

in the A9 vs 67 hand, he doesn’t actually have that many bluffs after the A turn because he shuts them down due to the fact that your range is Ax heavy. Also, if he is bluffing, he won’t use a big size. when he’s betting big on the A turn, it means he has AQ/AK beat because he’s betting big into a strong range. it’s a difficult fold on the turn but an easy fold on the river, especially considering ICM considerations.
when deciding whether to hero call, use this axiom: “reduce hero calling frequency when opponent is betting big into a strong/uncapped range.” this is because he knows that your range is strong and is trying to extract value from it by betting big.

Absolute grinder… Regardless of whether you thought you didn’t do as good as you could’ve, great run fam!!! I remember watching that A peel on the turn and knowing it was practically impossible to get away from at that point. I think I would’ve done the exact same thing, as much as it might’ve been a marginal spot, sometimes you just gotta go with your gut. Like you said, this is all in hindsight and if you were right, it’d be a different story. Keep grinding 🫡

Subscribing instantly. Truly great video. Your self criticism is well founded although the hero call was understandable. Very hard emotional recovery when a critical error rather than a bad beat destroys your chances at a final table. It can result in brain lock as it did here. However making a big run and a big score show build your confidence. Now you've done tat! Next is a big win. Obviously you are putting in the work. Go forward grasshopper!!! 💫💫💫

Looking at the hand here, I would probably lean to indeed folding the river for the reasons you said. However, in the moment itself... don't blame you for calling and might have done the same tbh.

I’ve gotten into a groove where in big spots like that A9 hand I like to lead out pretty chunky on a low paired flop… say 50%-60% pot and you’ll usually see where you’re at, if he just calls you can check turn with ur new showdown value and go from there, if he pots it on the turn I’d know I’m in trouble and just get away from it, would feel like a 6 or AJ. But it’s something I’ve been dabbling with online, I choose chunky sizing because say you bet 20-30% they have an easy raise with any 2 to represent the trips. Tough spot tho

Late stage tournament and FTs I’m tightening up my ranges on all streets for the exact reason you stated, staying out of marginal spots. Floating A high OOP with a backdoor flush draw on a paired board is one of those spots imo

Kudos to the Ace, Nine explanation post tournament. What you said here was excellent.
But personally I think the mistake on this hand was calling the flop bet with Ace high. You already knew Cord has a big range but he couldv easily had AJ, A6 etc.
You were basically just gambling at that point. You overplayed your Ace,Nine had which for me I agree with you that you couldv had a better spot than that.
But yeah, I really understand that call on the flop. But that was the mistake.

  • @mattpitstick6884

On that big hand with A9, you can go to turn sizing and really evaluate that. He’s taking a very large size on a turn that is much better for you. I think once that turn hits it becomes a very underbluffed spot, especially for the sizing that he took. Even if he arrives to the turn with a lot of bluffs, I think a lot of them give up on turn, and then even more give up on river. I think you could maybe make an exploitative fold on the turn, but especially on the river.

Eric - thank you for the great analysis! I’m a rec cash game player but wanting to do more tournaments. Short stack at final table can be quite a profitable position, but can be misplayed because people panic. Something I’m trying to improve on. My last tournament I had 10bb, cutoff with 66 & decided to shove, SB (AQo short stack) shove and BB (KK big stack) shove 😳 and KK held! I know now I should have raised then fold 😖

Ad9d good post analysis, I think unless V is extremely wild, where he has tons of bluffs, there is more value in bluff catching. If V is a good thinking LAG however, he should know you're dense in calls since you have lot's of ace high floats on the flop. From his perspective, he should be shutting his bluffs down when you check call flop and turn (you would appear very face up now, unless you feel like you can continue to defend with less than an ace, maybe KJ, even that doesn't have great incentive to continue much further? All of your middling pairs should struggle to still find calls though) . He isn't even in a spot where he can creditably rep a 6, since he is not playing from the BB, where he may try to commit to repping that even on an ace high board. In this formation his worse hands that bet this river chop with your holding.
Even players who have lots of bluffs, those usually in most cases narrow by the river, especially when they lose the nut advantage across the entire board texture. His JX should check turn to setup his own bluff catch or evaluate opportunity. So when he continues he mostly has 6X or AX and spade draws that you no longer beat on the river. He could have some suited broadway with bdfd on the flop of the club or diamond variety since he also has those in spades, but not that many combos of those, so I think this is a situation, where yes V may have many combos of bluffs for a wide range of post flop situations but this probably isn't one of them . At 3 million in winnings, V probably is more on the side of intelligent bluffer than suicidal one, because his bluffs do not work often enough in this formation due to your range and nut advantages on this texture and if he is studied, he should know this!

The A9 hand As played I think you are face up once u call the turn (which is a good card for your range leading it small is a option)and only a maniac is going to try and bluff someone off a Ace on that board on the river, you said it yourself you can't beat value

Thanks for the share, Eric. Hope you do not have this critical hand on heart anymore. I think the decision between call or fold was pretty close at this stage. But again you guys were deep to this tournament and the only mindset you should have is "surviving to the next paid jump". I am sure you have learned from this mistake. Take care and keep it up.
