Sounds like Todd Bowles played a prevent defense all game, right from the first snap of the Chiefs. Sounds simple, but it was brilliant and took away the deep pass from Mahomes, making him scramble for his life all day.
I think that exposes Mahome’s weakness for playing a short pass kind of offense. He could have tore up that zone between the line and those deep safeties, but it would have taken patients, of course the more the Bucs scored, putting the Chiefs behind, the greater Mahomes wanted to go deep to get back into the game.
The Redskins did a similar thing to the great John Elway, so it can happen to even the best. After that huge explosion of points from Doug Willams, putting up an amazing 35 points in one quarter, the Redskin’s defense sent the Safeties deep, shutting off any deep passing routes and even John knew he need to go deep to win or thought he did.
Joe Montana and the 49ers would do the same thing to John the very next year, by jumping out to a fast lead and the taking away the deep pass by dropping back the Safeties in deep coverage.
The only QB I know who could have patiently sat back tossing short passes and crossing routes to make a comeback was the original GOAT, Joe Montana. That was something Joe was legendary for doing and used it many times to come back in games they were way behind in, even in Super Bowls.
The most famous GOAT, who is the now undisputed GOAT, Tom Brady, is another who could beat that. After Atlanta had taken a huge lead, they went into prevent defenses to stop Brady, but instead of looking deep, Tom took what they’d give him and used shorter passes and running plays to come back and win.
It goes to show that Mahomes still has some maturing to do. He thought he could scramble around and buy time for his deep receivers to get open, but with the deep Safeties, they were never getting wide open. He needed to look for quick passes he could dump off to the halfbacks, running backs or TEs and he had one of the best TE in the business.
He’ll get there, once he stops relying on his athletic abilities. John Elway had to lose three Super Bowls before he finally settled down and used his head rather than legs to win back to back Super Bowls, creating a Denver Dynasty.

@@vincentnewman5345 Is that right? You’re probably correct, but both Safeties dropping into deep coverage was always referred to as a “prevent defense” though, it is possible I was taught wrong. My brother and I learned most about football from my dad and his dad.
His father actually played pro football, but that was on teams before the NFL even existed. By the time the NFL was formed, he had retired from football. Basically, the team he played for was Washington DC’s pro team, but that was sort of sandlot league, but they were DC’s only pro team at the time.
By 1936, when George Preston Marshall brought the Boston Redskins to Washington DC, my grandfather had hung up his pads. Both him and my father referred to two deep Safeties as a “prevent defense”. Well, only when it’s used in the final minutes of a game to prevent any deep passes. Especially if the outside LBs drop back into short pass territory, preventing short passes along the sidelines.
I can see where it might be more complicated than that, but it’s just how we learned. The one thing I do know is, had Tampa (Todd Bowles) had moved into some sort of a defense to prevent deep passes instead of blitzing the QB in the last seconds of the divisional playoff game, Brady would have probably got him a second dynasty, with a different team. Something no QB has ever done.
How could they go to man coverage with receivers like Kupp and Becket? That was an extremely poor decision on Todd’s part. That was a no brainer call and since Tampa had all of the momentum in the second half, Brady would have most likely beaten the Rams in overtime.
Tampa had come back from being 24 points down in the second half. With home field advantage, and once Green Bay had been eliminated, I don’t think anyone could have stopped Tampa on the road to the SB?
They could have beaten San Francisco at Tampa, and definitely taken Cincinnati in the Super Bowl. I know nothing is certain in the NFL, but the odds would have been in Tampa’s favor for sure.
There was really only two teams in the NFC division that Tampa always struggled with. That’s New Orleans and Los Angeles. New Orleans had beaten Tampa four times in the last two years, in the regular season. The Rams had beaten Tampa twice in the same two years. The Rams, being in a different division, only faces Tampa twice and won both times.
Brady’s Kryptonite is pressure. Those two teams can get a lot of pressure on Brady, making him throw earlier than he wants to. That’s when Brady makes mistakes and is easily picked off.
I knew going into the divisional playoffs that the Rams would defeat Tampa, even at home. I give Brady credit for having a brilliant second half, tying the game within the last minute. He left too much time on the clock. If Tampa had taken a little more time to score, they could have left the Rams no time to get in FG range before time expired.

Todd Bowles is the former coach of the New York Jets. He was fired and Adam Gase was hired as his replacement. Bowles assembled a masterful defensive game plan and wins a Super Bowl. Gase was fired the same season. Just sayin’…

I’m a die hard Jets fan, they have many problems, one huge one has always been the offense but, during his time there, Bowles was an abysmal play caller and the offense gradually got worse from his first year. The original comment makes it seem like the Jets were wrong for firing Bowles but I think they were very much correct. Gase was a horrible choice as replacement but, I have no idea who would be a good replacement.

I believe the biggest part on why Brady was so good during the Bucs season/playoffs was due to him now having fun. We learned that its not the patriot way that made the patriots win. It was Tom Brady ability to make everyone around him better. As a chiefs fan I am very annoyed with nr 12. While with the Patriots it was hate, but I need to actually respect him its crazy to see him going to another team and winning the superbowl, even if it was my team who lost.

My friend, don’t lie to yourself and say that it was the refs to make yourself feel better that the Chiefs lost. Don’t ever lie to yourself. Accept the truth. Be real. The Chiefs lost this. Why? Not because “the refs were making bad calls.” They lost because their Offensive Linemen were getting babied by the Buc’s front seven all game long and, on top of that, safeties we’re playing DEEP to counter the deep threat offense that is part of KC’s offensive scheme. Specifically, Shaq Barrett and JPP were up against tackles who were only in the game to replace injured starters. Do you know how many yards Patrick Mahomes scrambled for in that game? And these aren’t yards gained. These were yards he ran from scrambling from the pocket. He scrambled for nearly 500 yards. He was pressured in almost 30 dropbacks, and the Buc’s defense blitzed only 6 times. Other times, they had only four pass rushers. What does all that mean? It reassures us that the Chief’s O-Line was getting absolutely demolished and the Refs didn’t have to do anything. I’m sorry, friend. But the refs didn’t win this one for the Bucs. That defense was stellar, KC’s offense couldn’t catch, and the O-Line was as miserable as a dead bedroom.

Not taking anything away from the Bucs because they still had to show up and play, but their defensive line definitely had a much easier time going against a backup offensive line that four out of five were backups, which in turn severely threw Mahomes off his groove, and their secondary definitely capitalized on that.
Am I saying the Chiefs would have definitely won? Absolutely not. But the game would've definitely been much closer, with the Chiefs potentially having at least ONE touchdown or, at most, winning.

Even with those tackles, it was gonna be the same, chief fans like to forget that the regular season game was only 3 points, in the second half Bucs defense Made some adjusts and kinda dominated the chiefs offense.

the bucs objectively stopped being underdogs when everyone knew KC was gonna be without both starting tackles. which meant the bucs wouldnt need to blitz to get pressure and wouldnt need the safeties in run support at all. that wasnt a brilliant game plan it was just the logical adjustment to make in that situation. and it was no surprise to anyone that it ended up being the correct adjustment to make.
the bucs defense was the MVP of that playoff run, but everyone knew they were going to eat going into that super bowl. if anything, i give them far more credit for the games vs the saints and packers.

If KC would have focused on TBs weak spot (intermediate pass over the middle or that intermediate zone) and had some patience they might have won or made it respectful. Teams ate TBs D up doing this all year and why their pass D was somewhere in the 20s. Cant really blame it on Mahomes when his guys are dropping TDs and 1st downs left/right. The problem teams has with the Bucs is if they build up a lead they tend to abandon this pass/strategy for chunk yards or when teams get the lead they try to run on TBs top rated run D. Both is big mistake. KC being a quick score offense if need be should know this but I guess missing 2 starting lineman didnt help either. They were kinda fkd from jumpstreet really. Js

Yes, so? There are still professional athletes out there. The Chiefs never gave their tackles any help by using a TE or bringing in an extra lineman. They didn't try to run the ball till the 2nd Half. Bucs would've kicked their ass anyways, like they did in the 2nd half of week 12, when they had the Chiefs o-line intact.
