The reason why so many things are on a stick at the rodeo and at carnivals and fairs is to make it easier for you to walk around and eat your food rather than having to sit down at a table or carry around a plate.

Pickles in the US are made with a different brine than in the UK. Also, there are many varieties of pickles in the States. Not sure if the pickles you have in the UK will taste the same on a pizza.
French's, is a brand of mustard. We just call it yellow mustard, and the more spicy one we call brown mustard or spicy mustard.
Dijon mustard is also common name for spicy or French mustard.
Frenches is Canadian?
The best is stadium mustard or ballpark mustard, sometimes they have different branding

But the US doesn’t have the equivalent of Colman’s mustard. Even when you buy mustard with horseradish in the US it’s just not the same.
Native Houstonian here. Rodeo is a cultural event here. The city revolves around it. Wish they’d been able to show the Livestock Show and amazing concert lineup that accompanies it; but glad they made it! 🤠

I will say, America does love its fairs, carnivals, etc. and the food is always disgustingly indulgent and great. There's a Renaissance fair I go to here in Southern California every year and they have a frozen cheesecake on a stick that I swear I dream about.
They called their friend Mr Z, an Italian chef who's been a guest on the channel and is a purist about Italian food. Josh called him because he knew pickle pizza on a stick wold get his dander up. Jolly did a series where Mr. Z guided Josh and Ollie on a food tour around Italy.
It is alarming you have to describe that to three people despite all the context given.
It was a smoked Turkey leg. Their at Disney as well. The calf wasn’t hurt. If u go to a working ranch you’ll see that a lot. It’s how they have to catch them. The rodeo just times them
I saw Sophies face when they tied up the calf. Dont worry they let them go. They are ok. Lol! Im a animal lover too. I like to watch the Bull Riding. Rodeos are alot of fun. Yall will like it if you get to go there.
This is in Texas but this is also American west culture. The mountain west has its own type of cowboy culture. Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Idaho. A lot of cowboy cultures are in the states
I go to this particular rodeo every year multiple times, it's a very fun experience, great food, you can walk around and pet cattle, carnival rides, and the actual rodeo followed by a concert (mainstreams musicians come perform) Luke Bryan George strait etc, it comes to Houston in March and it's here for about 3-4 weeks, there's a cook-off, wine tasting, it's very much overwhelming lol but in the best way possible 😁 lots of fun!
Corn bread will be baked and the batter surrounding a corn dog will be fried. They are similar in tastes, also different because of how they're cooked.😊
Usually the batter for corn dogs is very sweet so the contrast of sour mustard makes it taste really good and Corn dogs from the Fair and Rodeo are famously known for being good 👍🏽

Did you guys not go to the Houston Rodeo when you were living in the Woodlands? Went to it several times growing up. All types of events: bull riding, barrel racing, bucking bronco, roping competitions, cutting horse, calf roping, mutton bustin', etc. Lots of fun. Also, a huge livestock show that raises millions $ every year for education scholarships. - Plus the crazy food!
You guys need to watch some American bull riding videos. It can be a very brutal sport for the rider.
Each competitor must stay on the bull for at least 8 seconds before being thrown off
Calf roping doesn't hurt the calf at all, because sometimes to treat a cow you have to twist the neck to get them down, besides that calf will be on the someones smoker in 2 years. Bull riding is a whole nother story, ask Daz he thinks they're nuts. As kids growing up we had cow tipping, and slap a bull on the and run like hell. Ah, good times. In Texas we deep fry, or commonly known chicken fry everything.
I've watched The Office Blokes since the pandemic & love this channel also. Not trying to be creepy, but Sophie is 🔥🔥.

We call them braces. If it's metal/porcelain brackets glued to your teeth to make them straight it's braces. You may be thinking of retainers that can be a mixture of metal and plastic or just clear plastic. We sometimes call those Invisilines (it's a brand name but we use that name for even off-brand).
I had braces when I was a teen.
We also call suspenders braces sometimes too, especially if they are high quality ones made for pants with buttons for them, not metal clips.
I love this. I am a native Houstonian and the Rodeo is a way of life in Houston! So great to see all this from another point of view.

Rodeo's are just a show in Houston! Real rodeos are up north, where ranchers still ranch the old ways. Texans almost exclusively rodeo for money and thematics, not because they are actually living that lifestyle between rodeos.
If you want a REAL rodeo, you need to go to one of the places where there are more cattle than people - Wyoming, Dakotas, Montana, etc. Texas rodeos are strictly commercial enterprises and a total bastardization of the lifestyle.
Texas has more _total_ cattle than these states, but their sheer numbers and high human population has meant that the industrialization of the process is needed. Massive feedlots like those in Hereford are a testament to this. There are no ranch hands riding horses at these places, the cattle spend their entire lives in a feed lot, chute, or cattle car before being slaughtered. If one escapes, they have to _call_ a wrangler to get the cattle because they aren't involved in actual cattle ranching.
In the northern states like Wyoming, most cattle live on open ranches and need to be herded to different feed sites. That is what necessitates the rodeo lifestyle. Over 90% of Texas cattle just live in regulated enclosures in spaces so tightly packed, you can _smell_ a feedlot 20 miles before you get to it.
@@Chris-fn4df In Houston and Dallas, of course there aren’t ranches, but Texas still has the most cattle of any state in the US. Places like South Texas and the Panhandle are still very much ranching epicenters. And the competitors at the rodeo are professionals from all over the country and the world. From Canada, to the West, the Prairie, and South America.
The Houston Rodeo is also the nation’s largest livestock show.
Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo… there’s a lot not included in these videos. It last for about a month & there’s concerts every night. They didn’t go inside the main arena for the professional rodeo competitions either. It’s the largest livestock exhibition & rodeo in the world.

They didn't even show the barrel racing, any of the rope work, or the big bulls. They are basically just showing things that would be a county fair.
When I was a kid, my mom used to only use Gulden's spicy brown mustard and I thought ALL mustard tasted like that... super spicy and extremely harsh to this kid's palate. Eventually, years later actually, I found out that yellow mustard is milder, although still a bit on the tangy side. Now it's my favorite thing to have on ham and swiss sandwiches. I also do the ketchup, mustard combo on corn dogs, burgers, etc.
For a long time I didn’t like mustard either. It was too strong for a kid but now I love it.

Turkey legs are smoked, that's why it's red inside. And a common saying in the US to tell someone you know what you're doing is "This is not my first rodeo". So it was even funnier that they kept telling everyone that this was their first rodeo. Deep fried Oreos are OK but the crunch is the best part of an Oreo and it loses that when you deep fry it. We have Renaissance Festivals here and they do everything on a stick but, they call it a stake like in medieval times. I always get the same things - the Steak on a Stake (a ribeye steak cooked over an open flame that they put on a stick), the fried Macaroni and Cheese on a Stake (macaroni and cheese dipped in a batter and then deep fried), and for desert I usually get the Cheesecake on a Stake (a semi-frozen slice of cheesecake on a stick).
Gaynor, you were probably thinking of a retainer which is similar to braces in purpose but is a removable device.

The little boy who fell off the sheep was crying because he fell off, not because he was hurt lol. They get mad and their feelings get hurt when they don't perform how they think they should've. It's great fun though. Kids love it.

So the turkey legs are red because they are smoked, one of my favorite things to get at a fair. Definitely one to try, but you really can't do it at home
Gaynor - you don't need to have boot made (very expensive!) - you can go to a boot store and purchase all of the best brand from Tecovas to Loredo to Justin Boots or Tony Lama to Stetson - they will fit them appropriately......just an FYI - they will probably require a couple a Band-Aids on your heels and ankle at first, while breaking in the wonderful leather (this would happen even if hand made) - but after a few wears - they will be the most comfortable footwear you have ever worn! They cost anywhere from about $150 to well over $1000 and that's not hand made . . but they will last you a lifetime there is nothing like a wonderful cowboy boot!
Usually cowboy boots break in right about when they need to be resoled .

Calf roping (where they hog tied the calf) came from the Old western cowboy days when they had to catch the calves with their ropes and tie the legs so they could brand them or give them medical treatment. It later took on a sport to see who could get the calf down and ready for branding. Then the rodeos adopted it as a timed sport for spectators.

There are different flavors of pickles. Dill pickles, sweet pickles. To " pickle" is a technique kind of like marinating. I love Dill pickles. They are cucumbers pickled in dill. So there's more than 1 standard pickle flavor.
As a Houstonian my favorite time of the year is rodeo season and I recommend spending as much time there in order to experience everything because there is a lot to do and especially attend the rodeo part where best of the best rodeo athletes from all over the world compete then at the end of the rodeo experience a great concert

If y'all decide to come to Texas. State fairs and rodeo times are usually in October at least in Central Texas. That particular rodeo in Houston comes in March.
Interestingly, I only eat corndogs with yellow mustard. We have different kinds of mustard in the U.S. We can buy more traditional European mustards (like those found in central Europe) as well as the U.K. However, on a corndog, I prefer the typical American mustards. The most popular American mustard is (ironically) called "French's."
I grew up going to Rodeo’s here in Aus. We do all the same stuff, and have great food to and have awesome culture. We have a lot of fun and they play very loud music like ACDC at rodeo events. They do a rodeo on the weekend, then the next weekend go to the next town and then the next, etc. so you can always go to a rodeo here in Aus.
The horseman that roped then hog tied the calf, is called Calf Roping. The cowboy riding the bucking horse is called Bronc Busting. Bronc is short for Bronco, which is a bread of horse or a slang term for all horses. When the cowboy rides a bull, it's called Bull Riding and those clowns that try to keep him from getting hurt are called, Bull Fighters. A woman who races for the fastest time around barrels are called, Barrel Racers and the event is called Barrel Racing 🐎. The cowboy that jumps off his horse, grabs a steer by the horns and pulls it to the ground is called, Steer Wrestling.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is our version of the country fair. Mutton busting is children rodeo riding sheep and is a fan favorite. I mean it's children and sheep, how could it not be hilarious.
Mustard in the U.S. is different from the U.K. I ate mustard almost every single day when I was a child. My daddy used to joke that my insides were probably yellow. Yellow mustard is not a hot or spicy mustard but it does have a bright, almost vinegary taste. I never ate ketchup on my corndogs, only mustard. The corndogs weren't sweet either.

Mostly they showed the FAIR. Very little of the RODEO. The RODEO is the bull riding, bronc riding, calf roping, barrel racing, etc. The FAIR is all the food and carnival rides.
Catching a calf/cow with a lasso is the most humane way to corral them. Their necks are strong af and they fall all the time like that anyway 😂

Gaynor, just wanted to clarify that Chick-fil-A doesn’t actually marinate their chicken in pickle juice. They use a buttermilk mixture which contains SOME pickle juice and some spices but it’s definitely not just straight pickle juice.

Amaricas best fairs are the backbone of a good time in this country. Most of them you will find deep fried everything lol. There’s a renaissance fair in Tampa FL that I used to go to and their turkey legs were top notch. I recommend y’all visit the states soon and go to one of the big fairs! Love the videos
I grew up in 4H which is a kids program that works with the future farmers of America.. I did mutton bustin when I was 4 and I used to show Pygmy goats at the fair every year until I was about 15!! Great times I love county and state fairs I used to have so much fun

By the way, the HEB signs you see represent the largest privately owned grocery store in America, and only in Texas. And headquartered in San Antonio, where I live. And is one of the top companies to work for in Texas, and probably the US.

There are so many kinds of pickles, you need to know what kind they put in the pizza. Dill? Sweet? “Bread and butter”? Hot? I like pickled peppers (pepperoncelli) on pizza.
Can find all of those foods in the Midwest at the State fairs. Local orchard company has a fall festival and pig races are a big attraction. Family fun is a great thing!
While Brits seem to be fixated on TX, most states have rodeos even NYC oddly enough. It originated in the SW when Mexican vaqueros passed it on the drovers. The point of the stick is to facilitate walking around with snacks, so you don't have to stop. AFA concessions nearly every rodeo or state/county fair has similar food stands. It's actually the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, there is no "Texas Rodeo" as every county in most states west of the Mississippi has one.
When I studied abroad for a semester in Spain, I discovered that mustard in Spain tastes NOTHING like the mustard in The States. It was almost like eating solidified vinegar with yellow food coloring. I normally LOVE mustard, but not their definition of it. Most of the other food I had over there was good though. Of course, there are many different types of mustards here in the U.S. as well (Dijon, Grey Poupon, honey mustard, etc.)

Smoked turkey legs are quite good. A store near me sells smoked turkey tails which taste the same but are a lot cheaper. Ill buy a package and share them with my dogs.

If you ever get to visit on an extended trip, consider going South to North instead of East to West. Start at the Texas/Mexico border area and experience Texas as you travel north. Then make your way to Montana. You'll get to experience what Friday Night Lights referred to as the Real America and get treated with nothing but love.
I'm an American, and I've lived most of my life in the west. I've been to many rodeos, and they are amazing and great fun. My favorite events are the barrel races, which is "cowgirls" riding horses around a series of barrels, and it's absolutely amazing, and "muttin' busting" which is young children riding on sheep. I'm amazed at the skill required for team roping and calf roping, and in spite of what some may say with respect to the treatment of the animals, this was an essential skill in the old west. I'm not a fan of bronco or bull riding as I don't believe the thrill is worth the risk to both the riders and the animals. Nonetheless, if you've not ever been to a rodeo, I greatly encourage you to do so. It's an experience like no other.
Rodeos are amazing to go to. My nephews and nieces were racing BMX at 3.

I know a three year-old that could ride a two wheel bicycle but that was like 40 years ago and he was the only one I have ever seen do that.
A lot of weird foods you will only find at fairs, festivals and carnivals.. I doubt if you go to a normal pizza place and ask for pickles. They probably don’t have any.
One of the things you find at places like this is funnel cake. It’s cake batter poured through a funnel into hot grease. It’s usually topped with powdered sugar. Depending on the batter, they can be light and airy or they could be dense. The light everyone’s are the best.
The first time I had funnel cake was at the California Strawberry festival and it was topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.

I’m from Houston where this rodeo is and when I was 7 and 8 I entered my pig in the pig race and won both years.
Pizza on a stick or anything other than hot dog on a stick (corndog) is just a play on carnival food (cotton candy, etc). Everything on a stick. Fried chicken cones with a natural stick. cheese on a stick is tasty.. lke a corn dog but cheese (American Cheese) instead of meat inside. Meat on a stick (skewered meat). the sticks keep your hands clean.
