We have lived outside of Fairbanks for over 30 years. We love the warm summers and gardening, canoeing, fishing, backpacking. We love our neighbors that are always helpful. We love that there is an International Airport 15 minutes away. We love the sugar snow for cross-country skiing and snowmachining. We love big game hunting and fishing for huge fish to fill the freezer. We love that there is no traffic lights across a thousand miles of highway from Fox to Circle, North Pole to Valdez, Fox to Manely Hot Springs, Ester to Healy, etc.

I happen to agree with your list of reasons not to move up here. However, I would also like to add that Fairbanks lacks any major chain restaurants such as Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, Golden Corral, etc. Because if you wish to go to these places you'll have to go to Anchorage.

As well as IHOP, Popeyes, DQ, Burger King (since 2007), Panda Express, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Applebee's, Denny's (since 2022), and Dave & Buster's (Arby's recently returned to Fairbanks after a decades-long hiatus); in terms of retailers: Target, Kohl's, Burlington, Best Buy, and CVS, while the Fifth Avenue Mall has the only Apple Store, Michael Kors, and Victoria's Secret in Alaska.

Folks are a good weird. I had great friends who were more loyal than family. When I got there in May, I bought a set of golf clubs. Ft Wainwright does have a golf course. Then when winter hit I bought a sled and hooked up my two huskies. We headed out to Farmers Loop Road to the Alaska Dog Mushers Association Trail and started racing. Two became 23 dogs. Lived here in Fairbanks for 20+ years. I live in Fox right outside of it now and we mind our own business but all our neighbors know each other and we do help each other out often. In Fairbanks itself you'll noticed we have a crack/meth head problem they love going to Walmart/Lowe's/home Depot and steal all sorts of goodies. Had a light bar stolen off my truck when going in the store to grocery shop. Military wise it is a military town and being stationed here I'd advise especially to new military that they go out often and enjoy the nature and not just latch onto Wainwright or Fairbanks. I also served and this was my last duty station so I'm honestly not just talking from one side but from both civi and military side. Don't go out and party because most the "clubs" are trashy places that only spawn garbage and have the same people causing the same drama for the past years. Many of military marriages are ruined in these wonderful clubs.

are you in Fairbanks? I was born raised there and lived in it over 40 yrs. So, always tell everyone when you go off alone hiking or a drive, dress in layers, it is crazy dark and freezing in the winter so stay close to friends and keep busy. Stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Always be prepared for the worst when you go out in the cold. There are fun things to do at the UofA -- your close to nice little restaurants and activities at the College. The moose will not charge you and trample you unless they feel trapped or have babies and your within a few feet trying to interrogate them. Bears stay in the woods mainly and if they come out then that is a shocker and they are not around the town or College. Alaska has a lot of young down to earth people -so you will make the best friends of your life. Just guard your own safety and be open to loving the views and nature.

People are independant in Alaska and love the freedom they have. Either you love it or hate it yet those who hate it do not belong and are not meant to be there. I spent a a total of 8 years in the Fairbanks area '80-'88. Two and a half years in the army at Fort Wainwright, five and a half years as a civilian, four of which I was a full time student at The University of Alaska Fairbanks.
I tell people Fairbanks is an open air septic field with an army post on one side and a university on the other.
I tell people that in Alaska, if you can get two people to agree on anything you can start a political party, and if you can get five people to agree on anything you can start a religion.

Yeah, but the people in Fairbanks are not Wasilla Weird. Fairbanks has very bad airpollution due to wood stoves and being in the interior, which sucks all the filthy air downwards, Fairbanks is dreadfully hot in the summer as well. Fairbanks is a college town. Fairbanks has less trails and mountains to explore than many towns in Alaska. Also, it floods a lot. You have a few big rivers flooded by Spring breakup. One good thing is Fairbanks has an REI and you can buy new or used gear there.
