Âshıkın maksûdu ol mahbûb-ı bî-hemtâ imish
Himmeti gayet bülend u matlabı bâlâ imish
The lover’s purpose is that peerless beauty
High is his aspiration; lofty is what he seeks
Kâf u nûn iklîmi Ankâsın shikar etse n’ola
Rûh-ı ârif shâhıbâz-ı Kâf-ı istiπnâ imish
You are the phoenix of the land of Kaf and Nun; whatever it hunts
The soul of the saint is the falcon of freedom’s mountain
Nûr-ı pâk-ı Hakk’ı Hak ile shuhûd et ey gönül
Bunda yarin görmeyen yarın dahi a‘mâ imish
O soul, by the Real behold the Real’s pure light
He who sees not that Friend, tomorrow shall be blinder still
Gayra bakmaz dâ’imâ sırr-ı sarâyın pâk eder
Sâdıkın zîrâ murâdı Hazret-i Mevlâ imish
Never look at another, keep pure your palace’s secret
For the quest of the sincere is the Presence of God itself
Kâbe kavseyn’i geçip erish sarây-ı vahdete
Sırr-ı ev-ednâ Hüdâyî cümleden a‘lâ imish
Beyond the Two Bows’ Length, he has reached the mansion of unity
Hüdayi, the secret of ‘Or Nearer Still’ is higher than all else
THE AUTHOR
Aziz Mahmud Hudayi (1541-1628) is amongst the most famous sufi ermiş's (saints) of the Ottoman Empire. He was a mystic, poet, composer, statesman and jurist of the Hanafi and Maturidi schools of thought, and founded the Jelveti Order of Sufism.
