This is a great and helpful video. The next time you should steam the fabric before you start painting. That would get rid of the creases along the backdrop at the end. Thanks for sharing!
Very true! Thanks for the feedback! ^G
Really appreciate you showing us how to do this! Thanks!
Wow! What a great tutorial, Iâve always wondered how to do this! Thanks guys! đđŒ
Thanks! Glad you found it useful! ^G
This is exactly what I have been looking for, thank you for saving my life.
Have you tried it?
EXCELLENT Info!! Thank you guys!!
I love the way GC painted himself into the middle of the canvas :-D Nice job, lads!
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...lol ^G
Impressive results. THANKS for this, need a backdrop and don't want to spend a mint
Brilliant THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Thanks David and GC....nicely done how to video. I'm giving chalkboard paint on canvas a go later today.
How did that go? Interested in seeing the results.
Gotta block off the windows with Duvetyne to block out the blue light from the sun outside coming in. One of the first things i learned as a commercial photographer.
Most flashes are the same kelvin as daylight..also a studio flash will overpower daylight in most cases
I think you guys are awesome!!!
Alot trust me
I make my own backdrops, but I use cotton (from Ikea) rather than canvas for easier storage. Also use colored dyes instead of paint so it docent crack when rolled up for storage. Creases. I often use Calico in stead of cotton, wash it and leave the creased crumpled effect. I have a pole loop sewn across the top and bottom of the material, top one for the support pole and the bottom one for another pole to add some weight if needed. The good thing about making your own is they are unique. Occasionally I will ask an art student to paint a scene with the dyes. Another effect can be had by dyeing your cloth with various colors, have it laid out flat. I do mine outside in the garden and then while it is still wet throw hand fulls of ice on to the backdrop, as it melts its gives a different effect as it reduces the intensity of the colors where the ice has melted. Good luck. Hope this is helpful and be different.
Great suggestions - I've gotten $1 king size sheets from Habitat and used paint as well as Rit dye on them. Not nearly as heavy as canvas and gets the job done.
Hey Stuart, you ought to do your own video. I like your idea better!
Grab yourself a steam iron, hang it up and get all the folds out of your canvas before you primer. You can always put creases in it later if you want that look.
Beautiful girl đ
There are also rolls of pre-primed canvas. They are generally primed with a couple gesso layers. This van save some time (and effort) and allow you focus more on the creative finishing. Also they come rolled, so no creases. They are more expensive than a dropcloth... but for the time they save and the quality of the final product... It is worth it.
can you guys make a video where do DIY a huge full length canvas backdrop. the kind that allows for full body, seamless shots please!
â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
THank you for this. Can you roll it up for storage, or does the paint crack?
Great work! I'm curious if you are able to steam out the creases in the backdrop?
reaaly helpfull...
Fajni faceci mĂłwiÄ o fotografowaniu wĆaĆciwie tĆo zrobili Ćwietnie pozdrawiam was i modelkÄ.
STEAM YOUR CANVAS FIRST!!!!!
Lol.. they need to edit and clone stamp out all the wrinkles, in every picture :). That's insanely stupid work, first make sure the BG is flawless.
I know itâs been a year but I want to know how well did the backdrop standup. My daughter is getting married and the new tradition is guests having their pictures taken. Her wedding will be outdoors and reception at another indoor venue. I wanted to used stencils. I was thinking of using sheets but a drop cloth canvas is much more sensible. So, how did your drop cloth stand up, what would you do differently (such as use fabric paint and/or textile medium) and how would I go about using a 12x12 stencil?
Well done guys. Iâm currently making my own but am wondering what paint to use as I would have thought normal wall pain would just crack? Did you guys use wall paint or something specific?
Josh :)
What paint sheen did you choose? Eggshell? Great video, thank you!
I too have made several back drop using canvas... awesome projects! Theyâre inexpensive, last forever, even if wrinkled the shots still look nice! I would like to send you a couple of photos of my canvas back drops Great job guys.
What is the brand of the back drop stand? I noticed it did not sag in the middle. I normally use tiny push pins to tack mine to the wall.
Great good and concise video thanks so much.
I would love to see what your backdrops look like.
What paint did you use?
Hahaha. I call it Home Despot. Thanks
My own opinion is to thrift some curtains especially those curtains from the 90âs, they are some of the best thing to be used as backdrops.
The cheapest place to buy canvas is Harbor Freight and they also have different weights. Good video and thanks for sharing.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my login password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Kingston Jensen instablaster ;)
@Kairo Raiden thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Kairo Raiden It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account!
@Kingston Jensen glad I could help :)
This may be a silly question, but how was storage? Are you able to roll it up and not ruin the paint? Great tutorial btw!
@Amari Lorenzo this is totally not a scam, and you two are surely not related. What goes around comes around, remember that.
Question for you, have the wrinkles come out or has the paint permanently fixed them in?
I have a question I want to make the backdrop and itâs for Thanksgiving family photos. Iâm using my sons room for one wall. For his lighting Iâm thinking. Iâm going to change the bulbs to a 40 because he has a ceiling fan and he has 60 W bulbs in there. What do you think about the lighting. I noticed that you use blue grays colors and I am thinking for my Thanksgiving pictures what colors do you think could use. . I want to use this as a natural colors that I can use all year round. My paint already has the primer in it thank you. I need ideas. I have bought two different size antique crate for my background props. I noticed in your pictures you had two black cardboard wall whatever you call them on each side of your canvas. I donât need that I donât think so. I loved your idea thanks
Wondering what the total cost was at the depot?
Why didnât you iron it first? There are visible creases that show up in the photos. (The colors are great though.)
You're right! We didn't think about doing it at first as we liked the rough texture, plus we can always edit any unwanted creases or uneven splashes in post. ^G
@@thecreativecontrast1669 Imo removing the big creases is a better way. Now you have to edit every single image. i dont like the horizontal/vertical lines. Good info still! Make a new one that is ironed out :)
I have no problem with creases on mine, I just donât like the square fold pattern you get when you buy it. I stuffed it in a bucket and soaked it, periodically yanking it out and stuffing it back in, which gives you wrinkles, but irregular wrinkling. To my eye it actually improves the look, depending on your lighting, of course. Also, I like the look of mild vignetting, going from lighter to darker from the center to the edges. You can also use a tint-shift from top to bottom or center to edge (more versatile if you are going to use the backdrop in both landscape and portrait) though this is more challenging artistically. Super fun and itâs a project that allows me to obliterate (for a short time) my perfectionism: chaos is actually the goal here!
If you can find a used floor steamer, they do wonders for taking the creases out. Iâd use a canvas no heavier than 6oz. Or youâll be steaming for a while. Also, make sure to check if the canvas is sewn together before you buy. Some have a seam and some donât. You can look through the plastic and see it amongst the folds.
@@thecreativecontrast1669 the accountability though đȘđŒ
This is a great idea thank you. The only thing I would say to do different is to put more light on your subject. I feel like she didnât have enough light on her so all of her shots came out fairly dark. Itâs a common mistake when the photographers work people of color.
Did the paint make the backdrop stiff? What kind of paint was it ?
Hi. Thank you for the video. But guys! What I learned from my teachers is that we work in such a way that we need to retouch as little as possible. What can be eliminated before the photo shoot must be eliminated.
I'm curious from a space-saving standpoint, if both sides can be painted?
Can you do one on lighting placements for this set up,i have an opportunity to make lots of cash doing a sports event at a high school wrestling tournament next month, how would i set that up easily
I know this is an old video, however, how do you like shooting with the Siros L?
First off it cost about 300 to buy a ok backdrop. So far doing this ive spent about 300 just trying to make 2, but i dont paint so i had no materials. If you do 2 coats of primer it needs to dry for at least 5 hours no discussion, itll bleed if its wet. I purchased the exact same canvasâs , which come creased because there folded i couldnât find away around it. After the primer its pretty much just the painting just make sure you tape it down and have fans and you are in an open area. This could be very affective if you wanted something very custom like me and i plan to continue to make, if your patient and dont care about your whole studio smelling like paint but if i didnt have a point to prove or knew how much money i would have invested into this. I would have just let someone make it. Good thing now whatever back drop thats requested in the future all i need is paint and a canvasđ€·đœââïž
Nice painting đš. Wonderful. Please was it the normal emulsion paint we used for houses? If not, could you reply in the comment below with the type of the pain.. Please
There is an expression "don't paint yourself into a corner"
You should drop that habit lol
Hi guys, great video! Can you tell me if you use acrylic paint or latex?
I was going to ask the same question.
I honestly dont see the problem with having wrinkle lmao people are too fixated on others personal preference. There's no one way of making art. I think it looks sick with a rough character to the background. I personally will be keeping my creases for some editorial/fashion work.
What do you use for the top cross pole on the light stands?
Thank you both! Question, were the photos edited or no?
Yes, the photos we display are edited - just part of the process in photography! ^G
@the creative contrast I'm looking for a chair like the one you use at 4:21, would you tell me the model?
Sir, can you please tell me what gray color you choosed? I want to paint my wall. What will be the best for all kindbof photography. Light gray or dark. Thanks in advance
We used a dark grey that I believe is called "Intergalactic" by BEHR, but you can use any colour(s) you like! ^G
Can you roll up this back drop when not using it
Is the paint oil paint or acrylic paint? I want to know
Wat paints to use so that it last longer and water proof
What paints do you use, acrylic or oil paint ?
Cool video. Whats the dimensions of the final product?
What kind of paint? Does it matter? Oil, latex?
hi please next time can you list the things you use and maybe how much they cost
What are the measurements of the fabric background 2 yards?
I love watching your videos, they have great tips. A question from a noob, why not just get colored fabric from Fabricland and just use that? Do you save more by painting a drop sheet?
Good question? Is it the texture?
I grew up in clothing factories so spent years in fabric stores. The best things to buy there would be commercial rolls of 2 weights of muslin, and a big roll of cheesecloth. Some satin fabrics in the wedding area can work and laces and sheers are good wardrobe alternatives in boudoir. The muslin can be cut to length and for really cool texture you can hot glue wisps and folds and build up ripples with the cheesecloth. A super handy hint: ask a college theatre geek or art student to help in exchange for photo work. The photo backdrops and theatre scrims are essentially the same craft.
@@jackjstrange yes, it's always about the texture! ^G
Glad you love watching our videos, thanks for the support! Coloured fabric differs in weight and texture to that of canvas - which is usually used for painted backdrops (muslins). The drop sheets were super cheap and there are many types at your local hardware store. We bought 2 to try out and settled on this heavier one for the video. ^G
Buy canvas on a roll...:)
What paint was used? How much did all of this cost?
What material is your Vflat
Let's go back to the prehistoric days! Apparently no one's heard of painting software and green screen ..
I love the paint but why leave the creases?
2 to 1 water to primer or 2 to 1 primer to water?
Which brand paint you use here
Esse tecido Ă© o que? Ă de cortina?
How much did all the materials cost?
Qaurintine brought me here
Hi. very interesting.
But you did not show how you put on the colors you said you bought 4 colors. Yet we only see the blue in the video
It needs a lot more details in the video.
Gave me the idea though?
I whould say after un folding the canves i whold of iron out the lines
You guys could use some music lol
You mention a 2:1 ratio of primer & water...which is the water ratio ?
These guys hardly reply to viewer's questions......NOT GOOD!
great tutorial, just check your camera for the headshot of you guys, is out of focus!
probably better to give it a once over with a hot iron first to get rid of wrinkes and creases etc and they sho up here in he final painted version. But good job otherwise.
Oye bato el de la derecha.
1like for the canvas 2like for xt3
311 Studio?
@4:43 she was about to initiate a wonderful TWERK !
What about wrinkles?
Nope not for me, I go savage, 8X12 is 270$ with aluminum roll bar and wood hanging weight plus valcro is a winner
Save time and money and just buy a backdrop. You'll make your money back and then some. Unless you're already a painter you're going to have to purchase all these tools and a can of primer and paint not to mention the time you need to setup and paint. Most paper rolls are cheap.
Some people like building their own sets and stuff. It's part of the fun for some of us. Not for all. đ
Iron your canvas first?
What a tremendous hassle and BIG MESS, I'd rather save and buy one already made !
Or just buy what you want from Ebay, lots cheaper.
Sure and set your camera to Full Auto as well too! The point of this is to show how anyone can make one, but the key is to experiment. Why buy something that is of cheap quality and mass produced, when you can have a unique one-off creation and take pride in doing so?! ^G
@@thecreativecontrast1669 Because it is cheaper? Easier to purchase something that is more affordable? I don't spend money I don't have and many others don't either and we have to do without the good stuff. But why buy something that is very expensive or purchase the very same thing from another vendor who sells them cheaper and they are not that greedy. I'll support what I can afford more than something it is hard to impossible to afford from a more expensive vendor for the very same thing.
F@$k this A-hole, I like this idea
Less expensive backdrops tend to be see-through, at least from my experience. The canvas backdrop they created is certainly more unique and could likely be placed in front of a window if needed. I like it.
Distracting creases on the background.
it me or is the punch ins just showing that ... focus is not nailed!!!!
YOU COULD HAVE MENTIONED ALL THE MATERIALS USED IN MAKING THE BACKDROP
DROMO STUDIOS they did
Thumbs down. Kept primer identity a secret...
friggn hacks. It looks like a mess
Shes not that pretty but it looks cool
