A wilderness stands in defiance of the encroaching megalopolis that surrounds it. Rare orchids and endangered species thrive near busy roadways. Wildfires rage through forests bringing life to the sandy soil. Land, once deemed inhospitable, gave rise to community and industry. For individuals experiencing this world inside and out of a veil of folklore and myth, a sense of pride and identity are inexorably linked to this diminishing island of darkness within a sea of traffic and lights -- all within the most densely populated state in the nation -- New Jersey.
For six years, filmmaker David Scott Kessler has been documenting New Jersey’s Pinelands in order to create a growing and evolving artistic endeavor. The Pine Barrens is presented as progressively changing editions during this period of political flux that threatens to undermine the protections that formed the nation’s first National Reserve.
The film, scored live by The Ruins of Friendship Orchestra, is an epic tone poem, a blend of fantasy and reality that captures the wonder experienced in the Pinelands in the hopes of rekindling the sense of importance and imagination that helped to preserve it over 40 years ago.

Just saw the film at the science academy in Philly. So great! Sweet, funny, and moving. Beautiful cinematography and music.
This looks so good! I love all the shots of the forest.

really? who are you in the trailer? I don't have a date for streaming yet. We have some more festivals before we can do that. The next one is the New Jersey International Film Festival this fall. If you are still in NJ, you should come to that. I'd love to get it streaming for everyone. It's a matter of finding a distributor or deciding to do it myself with far less exposure.

Hey Paul, We have pretty frequent virtual events to let people watch the film online. Mostly, we liked to do screenings with The Ruins of Friendship Orchestra playing the score live. The problem is with putting it online myself is that rules out any option for real distribution. A distribution company can do a lot more to promote the film and get it to their audience than I can on my own. Maybe that won't happen and I'll eventually put it up on Vimeo but that is kind of the last option.
