    The Joker never claimed it would be deadly, and we never see in the movie what happens to the Henchman, only that he falls to the floor (unconscious). It is equally possible (without the science to back it up), that the pencil slides along the outside his face (the path of least resistance), doing no damage whatsoever, and he only drops to the ground from having his face slammed against the table (the pencil being dislodged from the table, and falling somewhere out of view). It doesn't seem to me that the Joker (in this instance) is concerned with lethality, only theatricality.

    • @comics_section2258
      @comics_section2258 Před 5 lety +62

      Yeah but Joker also doesn't care about safety so he'd probably go for what's easiest to setup and there's no guarantee that it'd fall out of sight.

    • @morosis82
      @morosis82 Před 5 lety +37

      It's also equally possible that the Joker did exactly what it looks like he did, but the henchman will be fine after he wakes up with a terrible headache and has the pencil removed.

    from Wikipedia:
    [Needlefish can making short jumps out of water at up to 60 km/h (37 mph). Since needlefish swim near the surface, they often leap over the decks of shallow boats rather than going around. This jumping activity is greatly excited by artificial light at night; night fisherman and divers in areas across the Pacific Ocean have been "attacked" by schools of suddenly excited needlefish diving across the water towards the light source at high speed. Their sharp beaks are capable of inflicting deep puncture wounds, often breaking off inside the victim in the process. For many traditional Pacific Islander communities, who primarily fish on reefs from low boats, needlefish represent an even greater risk of injury than sharks.]

    Maybe that's the "magic" of the trick? Something that looks so deadly and traumatizing is actually relatively safe and treatable. So the gangsters see it happen and are spooked out, then get REALLY spooked out when the victim gets up and walks around like nothing happens, THEN get absolutely terrified when the very victim drops dead days later (if untreated and assuming no major blood vessels damaged).

    • @ChishioAme
      @ChishioAme Před 6 lety +27

      That's definitely a good train of thought. I'd always looked at it this way: the mob bosses were criminals (and certainly not squeamish), yes, but they mostly saw themselves as regular businessmen and probably didn't deal with street level violence very often. Then in comes Joker, an unknown, acting a bit like them in their, for lack of a better word, board meeting and when security tries to remove him, he starts talking about magic tricks then the next thing they know, he bashes the enforcer's head into the table, the pencil's gone, and the enforcer is unconscious, possibly dead. That kind of sudden brutality would be pretty shocking to anyone who isn't from Arkham.
      Another reason it could be so scary to them is the simple incongruity of a pencil being used as a weapon. To most people, pencils are pretty fragile things that they can snap with ease; then Joker rams one through a guy's skull. All of a sudden, you find yourself terrified of what he could do with something a little more sturdy. Compare the utter disbelief and awe that characters use when they speak of John Wick killing three men in a bar with a pencil in the John Wick movies.

  • @Draken0023
    @Draken0023 Před 5 lety +35

    The only question I have is this: Since it went in eraser-first, wouldn't that be more devastating? The blunt force of the eraser would likely cause more damage. It wouldn't puncture so much as tear through the eye, orbital cavity, opthalmic nerves, temporal lobe, and ventricular arteries all while forcing everything from the iris and cornea to the bone fragments deep into the brain. It would be like crashing a car into a brick wall; you would have a trail of brick fragments behind, leading up to, and at the stopping point of the car as well as pieces lodged in the grill after it had passed through. Add to that the stopping force of hitting the Occipital bone, which is anywhere from ~9.7mm in females and up to ~15mm in males, it would likely either fracture or completely shatter the pencil or scrape the interior wall. This would cause further brain trauma. If it goes down, towards the brain stem, it could tear through the medula oblongata and occipital lobe all the way to the brain stem. If it shattered, you have a multi-directional debris field, wiping out everything in the occipital lobe and beyond. If it wasn't fatal, it was likely permanently debilitating. That guy would've been brain dead instantly. Had it been point-first, he may have had a better chance, as the sharpness would've spread the brain matter rather than mash it into paste. The tip breaking likely would have required surgical attention, but not on the grander scale of a fully-shattered pencil. Is there a doctor in the house to corroborate any part of my theory? 😉⬅️ Irony

    The worst thing about it is that the most implausible part of the magic scene is sticking the pencil in the table so it stood up on it's own without breaking the pencil just by doing that and didn't deflect or break from the 'magic trick' which would require a pretty square on hit

    • @DemothHymside
      @DemothHymside Před 6 lety +13

      RDeathmark , just to play Devil's Advocate, The Joker had a lot of objects that look mundane, but are actually weapons. I know it's not fair to assume other people saw that the pencil was more than a pencil, but I alwayhs assumed it was actually some type of hard metal stabbing object made to look like a pencil. Of course, this was never even hinted at, so I'm not saying it definitely was, but that's just where my mind went when I saw the scene.

      To be fair, even with the pencil in his eye he could suffer massive head trauma from the force that Joker crammed into his head and onto the table... also, if the pencil happened to knick any large blood vessels on the way in due to the aggressive nature of its entry, it is possible that the security guy could've had an anneurism which would either immediately kill him or impair him for life- not including his now completely blind eye and the disabilities caused by that aforementioned concussion.

    Great video! I would note that a person unfortunate enough to have the penetrating object transect their internal carotid artery would likely expire very quickly as depicted in the movie. If he were concussed from the blow to the head at the table, he may not even regain consciousness before dying either. The general tendency is for vessels to get pushed out of the way by a penetrating object, but they can get caught sometimes.

    I always assumed it wasn't a real pencil, but some kind of weapon he designed to look like one. :) Like we see he carries a lot of blades with him, and a good example of the Joker creating a custom weapon is the shoe-blade that he kicks Batman with in the penthouse. Because it would be hard to ensure a regular pencil would go through the mobster's eye in the exact right spot to kill him. Odds are, it would accidentally hit the guy's forehead and snap, and the eraser end is still pretty blunt, even if he was pushing his head down really hard.
    Also, how did he stab a lead pencil into a table without it snapping/falling? He'd have to be pretty strong/fast, even if the table is just wood, it would have to be pretty soft to not only pierce the wood (have you written with a lead pencil lately?the lead snaps even just while writing) but embed deep enough to not just flop out when a guy's face hits it. I think it's not actually a wooden pencil with lead and rubber eraser, but some kind of blade with metal tips. We don't really even see an eraser on the end, just shiny silver metal so it could have been slightly sharp. The henchman has a lot better chance of being outright killed by a blade through the brain than a pencil.
    Of course I could be wrong, the Joker is definitely skilled at killing in random ways so a pencil doesn't seem that unrealistic for him, it also adds to his unpredictability and the feeling that nothing is safe when he's around because he can literally turn anything into a weapon. (I subscribe to the theory of him being some rogue military/government agent with training in torture, fighting and interrogation). Also we can see the Joker cradling the front of the guy's head at an angle that would suggest the pencil went upwards (aka higher and deeper into the brain's important bits) after he hits the table and falls back, so it's possible he was guiding the man's head to directly line up his eye with the pencil.

      @nicholastosoni707 Před 6 lety +9

      You're *probably* right. Depends on how cheap the pencil is. I've had a fair few where the graphite just _whoops!_ fell clean out of the wood.
      It's not hard to conjecture that he bought such a cheap-ass pencil, knocked the wood out, and replaced it with a long piece of metal just for that trick.

    • @silentfcknhill
      @silentfcknhill Před 6 lety +2

      Nicholas Tosoni Yeah it's possible for sure and that was just my interpretation :) I guess one of the great things about this joker is that we'll never really know the answer. He likes to keep people guessing, it makes them unsure and vulnerable. Is he really just the random and unpredictably dangerous wildcard who can kill a man with a single flimsy pencil, the force of unexplained chaos that he wants people to think?
      Or is he secretly a clever planner who can make a deadly metal weapon look like something harmless and just wants you to think he is crazy by overly denying it? He is a master of making deliberate things look random, after all. He could very well be aware of how he comes across and is more control of his image than he lets on. He seems to be well-versed in psychology and predicting what others will think and do, so he probably knows that if he wants people to think he's crazy he can't just say that he is, because crazy people are too delusional to recognize this, they're not self-aware enough nor in touch with objective reality vs their own. But by denying it, it really just makes his sanity seem less credible.
      Maybe he's some combination of both the chaotic lucky madman and the calculating and controlling psychopath, his actions speak louder than his words at least and I personally believe he has traits of both. Either way, whatever conclusion someone comes to, he knows that he's to be feared so it really doesn't matter because he'll win either way.
      He thinks he is sane, but wants you to think he's crazy by using reverse psychology and insisting that he is sane. I think there are different types of sanity, and while he may be completely in control and not "crazy" in the usual sense, he is still delusional. He's gone so insane that he's done a complete 360 and reached a level of super-sanity that humans aren't meant to achieve, where the social contract is meaningless and life is a depressing joke of a nihilistic mindfuck. Kind of like having a really hellish trip on a monster dose of acid, except it never ends and you're stuck with that worldview and personality forever. But he leaves just enough uncertainty about his mindframe and intentions to assure uneasiness so that way he'll always have the upper hand.
      I love this movie and this character. So much of Heath's performance and Chris' intentions are open to conjecture, even a decade later and that in itself is pretty crazy.

    One to add to the list. Receipt spike, from a restaurant shoet order line. Saw it my 2nd year as an EMT, when I responded to a stabbing at a place I worked, in high school.
    Watress' ex showed up with a large knife, and tried to end her. Senior waitress was a retired marine, got the blade in her forearm, and was able to drive said spike in, shutting him down.
    At 5 foot 3, and 138 pounds, she didn't look scary. But she scared me shit out of me, and I grew up around marines and bikers.

    Can confirm the "boys don't brace themselves correctly." In Pre-K I tripped while climbing off of a chair and simply landed point side up on the pencil in my hand. Luckily, I fell sideways and it hit above my ear.

    The Penguin knows whats up. That eyeglass surely must be a gentlemans accessory for umbrella-fencing. Bullet- and umbrellaproof, I'd wager! Recommended on your dominant side that faces the opponent while fencing with classy umbrellas.

    I have a question about a function in the Sonic games. In the underwater levels, when Sonic is almost out of air, he can go to a grouping of bubbles on the ground and wait for a big bubble to come out and inhale it and refill his air supply in his lungs. How would this scientifically work?

    • @Bolshoi333
      @Bolshoi333 Před 6 lety +6

      probably not well. Unless the bubble has amazing surface tension it'd pop before you could get a breath in

      assuming the air bubble stays together really well.

    They demonstrated something like this on 1001 ways to die show but one I remember is a javelin to the eye by a track coach. Also spongebob showed you get seriously hurt by a shot put thrown anchor.

    Could the flash run through a lightsaber without getting cut in half?

    • @TiagoTiagoT
      @TiagoTiagoT Před 6 lety +3

      I guess the answer depends on whether the Flash could beat Magneto if Magneto knew he was coming.

    • @KingOpenReview

      Not without phasing. Lightsabers apply force.

    • @TiagoTiagoT
      @TiagoTiagoT Před 6 lety +8

      gloomy Computation, it's hot gas contained by a magnetic field. Flash can move thru the atmosphere way faster than speeds that would cause nuclear fusion without actually producing a trail of star stuff, so the gas part is not an issue, and he moves too fast for the heat to transfer to his body; so the question is whether Flash can move very fast against a strong magnetic field.

    • @Evandroworks
      @Evandroworks Před 6 lety +3

      Could the flash die by cyanide ingestion? I guess the speed force makes him pretty powerful in regards to outside influence but what about inside agents? Dying by cianide would make him not that powerful i guess...
