Fiona Rae - 'I Never Think of Painting as Old Fashioned' | Artist Interview | TateShots

- čas přidán 29. 07. 2008
- Fiona Rae talks about her painting techniques and tools in her Hackney London studio as she put the finishing touches to works for her new exhibition at the Timothy Taylor Gallery.
The artist talks about her enduring love for paint. Her abstract canvases are an exuberant collision of painting styles: encrusted surfaces, brushy swathes and watery pools, along with kitsch cartoon elements, which somehow coalesce despite their differences.

Oh my gawd - that paint tube roller squeezer - that long palette - that secret liquid medium - that paint brush rolling tableau ... that studio ... when you got the tools right.

@Andrew Pingwin Oi bugger off
I have just been watching a bunch of these Tate shorts and have really enjoyed them. Thaty are beautifully put together and each has had something quite unexpected. Great series. Have just subscribed.....now to look at a few more. Thanks
I thoroughly enjoy seeing artists in their own painting den, talking about their work or style, just listening to their thoughts while panning round for a jolly good nose is so relaxing, and it inspires me to keep on painting - purely to see what the painting reflects back at me. Such an intriguing conversation to have. xxx
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the login password. I love any tricks you can give me.
@Rayan Heath instablaster ;)
@Ismael Tadeo thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Ismael Tadeo it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass !
@Rayan Heath No problem :D
I was watching this and I started to imagine the smell of the studio. Brings back memories
Really enjoyed this video, deff inspires me to keep going and continue being happy that people even take a second to look at your art, even if they don’t like it. I rather my art bring out some kind of emotion than just be “blah”. Thank you Fiona Rae
What a charming person...

Hi pues13,
Our conservation department tells us that 'Shellsol' (a proprietory product made by the Shell oil company), is a manufactured Turpentine substitute derived from petroleum. Because it is manufactured it is a lot purer than Turps, which can sometimes leave an oily residue.
Importantly, if you are thinking of using any Shellsol product in your work, be sure to check the MSDF sheet which will give you information on health and safety.
Best wishes,
Tate

I love her Studio
Saw Fiona Rai's work at a show in the nineties alongside Gary humes door paintings it was a strong show, two totally different approaches to painting, her work in this show was stronger,I feel to her present work, but its a tough old game, jumping through hoops, trying to reinvent yourself whilst at the same time having a brand identity for the galleries and art world. At least they have managed to keep going. Is it any good as painting and can it really stand on its own? only time can tell.

I've been using ultra-pure lamp oil as a thinner for 20 years and I'd never use anything else. Absolutely odorless and so much safer than official painting mediums. No problems at all with using it.
Where would you buy such a lamp oil from? Hardware store?
O que é " óleo de lâmpada" ?
اعمالك جميلة جدا واستعمالك للالوان مدهش منك نتعلم شكرا Fiona thanks
The more I see of Fiona Rae's work the more I love it. More more
Where do I get one of those paint tube squishers, I neeeeeeed one.

@Lytton333 ....YES! That is what I was trying to say above......
wonderful work, thank you for the peek inside your studio and process.
Not old fashioned. Beautiful, summery, quirky. It is like walking up to a big stream where a willow tree would be (slightly hidden) except it is a beautiful tree with a loving secret, small flowers that are alive and vibrant from another planet. Beautiful work. I love it,!
Wow, you really have a lovely way with words!
Wonderful coloristic!
So beautiful excellent
L o ve her paintings
Compmaturism sometimes explores that part of beauty which is covered in routine, craftsmanship, and speculation. Therefore, the eyes of many collectors are turned to the Compmaturism of the new trend in order to experience something truly.
Thank you
I have an old fashioned crush on Fiona.
😆
what kind of paint you used ? the brand name please?
Cool stuff.
very nice
None on display right now I'm afraid - sorry :-(

A lot of nice brushes and expensive oil paints but output is... While there are a lot of other artists who have very limited resources but their creations are really stunning. So, i guess what really matters is creativity, and not how much materials you have.

I like ur style baby!
Hello 👋 AMAZING 🎨 WOW !!! LIKE 👍👍👍 best wishes 🌼🌺🌼🌺🌼🌺
Good point on video today being as old fashioned as painting, I just wish her work wasn't so derivative of Polk, Dunham, Condo, Scharf, et al.. Painting world needs to take a decade long moratorium on combo-ing abstraction with cartoons.
What kind of painting are you most excited by these days?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤❤
Did she say Shelf Oil as a turpentine substitute? where would one get such a thing I wonder?
magnificent access to an artist of the highest caliber
OMG, 12 YEARS AGO?
should have subtitles in Portuguese.
shellz oil? schelz oil? what is that .i know im spelling it wrong.sorry
I found out its called Shellsol, one word , you can find it on art shops online like Jacksons art supplies

I will just say...WoW.
wow, wow, wow
She’s got one helluva lot of space - even for Hackney.
Some of the great impressionists would have given an arm and a leg for a working environment like that

The power of Compmaturism Transcendental Art is in the process of work.Compmaturism derived from ekspresionism and surrealism.
Well.. refreshingly free of cant and art-speak..
She just loves painting, you can tell... to get mucky with it and dive in..
Good luck to her..
bet that studio is long gone
why's that?
Искусство времён периода динозавров!
Well Pretty much impossible to love her whole aura, spirit, demeanor, attitude, outlook, and God Damn is she all sorts of sexy too. As a wannabe artist that came back to it after 25++ years being a wannabe Gordon Gecko . But I am so with you on the large mixing table, but you went to a whol-nother level of awesomeness with the table-O-Brushes. Its only been a decade and a few years..would it still be creepy if I ponouced my obsession , now!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA
clearly I am a big fan now. STAY SMILIN' Davy.STUN

Who was suggesting that painting was old-fashioned anyway?
Fashion is shallow. Art shouldn’t be equated with fashion. It dilutes it’s importance and everything it is meant to be. Fashion is trivia.
ANNOYING
True, and well said Tricia.
She seems too worried about fashion, whats fashionable and what is not.
Art could be about going against fashion.
These works owe more to graphics than painting. She does not consider the main aspect of painting, that of the integrity of the surface. Her work will therefor remain weak in comparison to real painting. Its basically gallery fodder work with a high price tag attached. Well done Fiona, I am jealous; never in the field of artistic endeavour has so much been paid for so little.
Gallery fodder is a good description.
less talk more pictures would be interesting!
Sometimes less is more
Anyone who would even associate painting with old fashioned knows nothing about painting.
Her paintings aren't banal or ugly enough to be masterpeices of modern art.
Her art-work is unimpressive... why there are soo many likes for her work ?
She is just a comercial “artist” only pleasing a very profitable market. Painting is dead and it’s only real function is to keep sustaining a bunch of galleries and their wealthy costumers. Their is not real and fundamental content in her work, only an style that is mainly about decoration.
I don't know why Fiona Rae is concerned with whether painting or poetry are old fashioned. Is this anxiety caused by the pernicious influence of Tate Gallery staff? One should paint because one has something to say, not for the approval of Tate Gallery staff or anyone else.
I bet that doesn't just get shoved up against her bed room wall, paint side down.
me me me, who cares.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
i like fiona rae but i don't really believe in what she has say about painting and poetics, to me its kitch romantism which is so far removed from the roots of poetry and romanticism. a painter who considers this cant possibly go on to speak about painting as an equal contempory force in a post modernist age. again i like her but i don't believe her to be a great comtempory with the recognition of the tate
shes really worried by the fear of becoming 'old fashioned', a worry of not belonging to her time
What a waste of paint and time and money.
but why are you doing the same paintings all the time? you can do better, be brave and try something else
