UK weather: Floods hit Northern Ireland as Storm Ciaran moves towards UK

- Parts of Northern Ireland have flooded due to heavy rainfall and people have been warned not to travel.
In Newry, County Down, the city's canal burst its banks with the police asking people to avoid the area.
It comes as the Met Office issued amber weather warnings for the South West and south coast of England for Thursday as Storm Ciaran approaches the UK.

The first man interviewed nailed it, "we're on a flood plain and we have a river and a canal" how long has it been since the river and canal were dredged, how long has it been since culverts and drainage ditches were cleaned out, how many rain gullies have disappeared under block paving over the years, all of the aforementioned due to lack of investment and maintenance, what do they expect when they get heavy rain; which we've been getting for centuries by the way...???

Exactly. Grids and drains blocked with leaves and litter even one plastic bottle in a drain can wreak havoc (from bitter experience) councils are to blame for alot of the flood waters not being able to drain away and insufficient flood defences around rivers. This will happen many times over before anything is done because its 'too expensive' to pay for from the billions in council tax we pay. Lived in my house for almost 50 years and in todays money I've paid over £58000 just in council tax. It infuriated me when our local council head retired (early) with a quarter million golden handshake when roads are full of potholes, grids are blocked, weeds and overgrown trees and shrubs in public places and cemeteries really badly neglected. Time for a massive shake up (edit: added a missing word and corrected a typo)

The local councils and road authorities haven’t cleaned out the drains in years in Northern Ireland, so goodness knows how long is is since the canal has been maintained added to the fact it has rained for the last week.

Water from hosepipe are clean water btw. If we have huge amount of rain in a short period of time then no rain at all it makes almost no difference because we only have x amount of storage space and x amount of water purification capacity.
